By October 9, 2026, 42 startups worldwide had reached decacorn status—valuations of at least $10 billion—already surpassing the previous full-year record of 34 in 2021. The figure is a year-to-date count, not the final total for 2026. Axios also reported PitchBook data showing that companies took an average of 5.5 years to reach $10 billion in 2025, down from 9.4 years in 2020.
What counts as a decacorn?
A decacorn is a startup or private company valued at $10 billion or more. A count of companies that “became” decacorns measures newly crossing that valuation threshold during a period; it is different from the number of companies valued above $10 billion at a particular moment.

How many companies reached $10 billion in 2026?
Axios reported 42 newly created decacorns globally through October 9, 2026, citing PitchBook-based market counts. That is already more than the 34 reported for all of 2021, the prior global annual record in the comparison, and the 14 reported for 2020. Because the 2026 count was reported with three months still left in the year, it is a year-to-date record rather than a completed-year total. Axios’s October 9, 2026 report.
How long does it take to reach a $10 billion valuation?
Axios reported that PitchBook’s average time to decacorn status was 5.5 years in 2025, compared with 9.4 years in 2020. That is a 3.9-year difference between the reported averages. The underlying table and cohort definition are not available in the cited reporting, so these figures should be read as PitchBook averages as reported by Axios; the calculation method and exact population being averaged are not established here. Why other 2026 decacorn counts differ
Counts can describe different geographies, dates, and company cohorts, so seemingly different totals are not necessarily contradictory.
| Figure | What it counts | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 42 | New global decacorns year to date, through October 9, 2026 | Axios, October 9, 2026 |
| 19 | New US decacorns through July 24, 2026 | PitchBook News, July 24, 2026 |
| 38 | VC-backed companies founded since 2020 that had reached valuations of at least $10 billion | Dealroom, September 1, 2026 |
The PitchBook News figure is US-only and reflects an earlier date, while Axios’s is global and later. Dealroom’s 38 is a founding-cohort count, not the number of companies that became decacorns during 2026. The sources do not provide enough detail to reconcile all of their inclusion rules, so the totals should not be treated as interchangeable.

What might explain the faster pace?
Dealroom’s September 2026 analysis found that recent fast crossings of the $10 billion threshold were concentrated among AI and AI-infrastructure companies. That offers context for the surge, but it does not establish that AI alone caused the broader increase in decacorn creation or the reported decline in average time to reach the threshold. Dealroom’s analysis.
