That is a finding about a self-selected survey sample—not 42.4% of every Steam account—and the same study shows substantial overlap with mobile devices and consoles.
GameDiscoverCo’s Steam Fan Snapshot, published in October 2026, surveyed more than 16,000 Steam players worldwide about how they play. Among respondents screened as monthly PC players, 42.4% said they used no other gaming platform. The result challenges the idea that Steam’s audience is uniformly multi-platform, while also showing that a majority of surveyed PC players do play elsewhere.

What the 42.4% figure actually measures
The denominator is crucial. The survey first asked whether people played PC games for at least one hour per month. Of all respondents, 91.5% met that screen. The 42.4% figure then describes the PC-playing group: the share that reported PC gaming without mobile or console play.
It does not mean that 42.4% of all Steam accounts belong to PC-only players. Steam has inactive accounts, accounts used primarily for non-game purposes and users who may not have appeared in this survey. GameDiscoverCo recruited participants online, offered giveaways and linked answers to Steam libraries with permission, so the sample reflects engaged respondents who chose to participate.

How PC-only and multi-platform play compare
| Reported pattern | Share | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| PC-only among screened PC players | 42.4% | Conditional on playing PC games for at least one hour per month |
| PC and mobile, no console | 22% | Overlap with mobile gaming but not a console |
| PC and console, no mobile | 11.5% | Console overlap without reported mobile play |
| PC, console and mobile | 15.6% | Reported use of all three platform types |
| PC players reporting no console play | 64.4% | Includes PC-only players and PC-plus-mobile players |
The categories use different denominators in the published summary, so they should not be added together as though they were one population-weighted census. The most useful directional result is that console participation is meaningful but not universal: 64.4% of surveyed PC players said they did not play on a console.
Do most Steam gamers also play on console?
Not in this sample. Nearly two-thirds of the surveyed PC-playing group reported no console play. That leaves a substantial minority with console experience, but “Steam gamer” should not automatically be treated as shorthand for “console gamer as well.”
Which consoles overlap most with PC?
Among the reported single-console overlaps with PC, Switch was highest at 7.5%, followed by PlayStation at 6.4% and Xbox at 3.2%. These are comparison groups within the survey’s platform-use data, not estimates of each console maker’s total audience or market share.

For developers and hardware analysts, the practical implication is segmentation: a PC release may reach a genuinely PC-focused audience, while a separate group may expect cross-platform progression, shared friends lists or releases on a console they already use.
How prominent is Steam Deck use?
Steam Deck use was reported by 17% of surveyed PC players, making Valve’s handheld gaming PC a notable part of this engaged Steam audience. That figure is especially relevant when “PC” includes portable hardware rather than only a desktop or conventional laptop.
GameDiscoverCo also presented a separate ownership-or-use comparison with different figures: 16.4% for Switch use, 13.4% for Steam Deck use and 5.5% for people reporting both. Those numbers should not be substituted for the 17% figure because they come from a different comparison and denominator.

What the handheld result does—and does not—show
The survey indicates that dedicated handheld play is substantial among respondents already active on Steam. It does not establish Steam Deck’s global installed base, sales, market share or usage across every Steam account. A Steam Deck is still PC gaming for the purposes of this audience analysis, even though its form factor resembles a console.

Why the finding matters
The split between PC-only and multi-platform players affects how companies plan launches, communities and support. A PC-only player may value graphics settings, input flexibility, mod support and compatibility across desktop hardware. A player who also uses mobile or console may care more about synchronized saves, account linking, controller support and a consistent experience across screens.
Simon Carless, the GameDiscoverCo author, summarized the value of the breakdown: “It’s important not to have a monolithic view of the market, and this helps.” The percentages show why: Steam contains a large PC-focused segment, but also a wide range of platform combinations.

How reliable is the 42.4% estimate?
It is useful as a survey statistic, not as a precise census of all Steam users. The participants were recruited online and volunteered after an incentive, which can favor people who are more engaged with games and online communities. GameDiscoverCo also cautioned that the sample is “a more turned-on, online-savvy subset” and more international than many comparable surveys.
- What is established: 42.4% of screened PC-playing respondents reported PC-only play.
- What is not established: the exact percentage of all Steam accounts whose owners play only on PC.
- Why geography matters: the survey was worldwide, so its mix may differ from a country-specific gaming survey.
- Why the screen matters: occasional or non-PC Steam users were not the denominator for the PC-only result.
Gamody’s October 17, 2026 summary corroborated the headline figure and principal overlap percentages, but did not supply a population-weighted adjustment.

Bottom line for readers
In the 2026 Steam Fan Snapshot, 42.4% of monthly PC-playing respondents said they played PC games exclusively. Most of the surveyed PC-playing audience therefore reported at least one additional platform, with mobile overlap more common than console overlap in the published breakdown. The safest interpretation is not that Steam is either “PC-only” or “multi-platform,” but that it contains both a large dedicated PC audience and a sizeable group that moves between PC, mobile, consoles and handheld PCs.
