The most practical retrofits add network control or automation around that hardware; they are not universal plug-and-play conversions. Here are four possibilities, from an infrared bridge to a firmware reflash, and what to check before you start.
Which old gadgets are good candidates for an ESP32?
Start with the gadget’s interface, not its age or brand. Can you identify how its buttons, display, or electronics communicate? Is the feature you want to add within the ESP32 board’s capabilities? And can you work on it safely, especially if it connects to mains power?

ESP32 boards differ in their system-on-chip variant, flash capacity, and other hardware characteristics. Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 documentation explains why configuration depends on the specific board. Identify the board before selecting peripherals, firmware, or wiring instructions.
1. Add network control to an infrared remote-controlled device
Can I make my old TV smart with an ESP32?
An ESP32-based infrared bridge can transmit remote-control commands and, in some setups, learn them. That can let a home-automation system trigger selected functions on a TV, stereo, or climate device without replacing its original electronics. It does not add streaming apps or change what the TV itself can do.

- Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
This works best when the device’s original remote uses infrared and you can position an emitter so the gadget receives its signal. ESPHome has an infrared and radio-frequency proxy project category, but that is not a promise that every device or protocol will work. Check the particular remote and receiver before building around it.
2. Give an old clock or clock radio synchronized time
Can I reuse an old clock display?
An ESP32 can supply network-synchronized time and related features while you reuse an old clock’s enclosure, buttons, display, or speaker—if you can identify and work with those parts’ interfaces. ESPHome’s curated DIY project list includes an IoT clock, showing the general idea rather than a recipe for any particular vintage clock.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Before taking a clock apart, find out how its display is driven and whether it can be controlled independently of the original circuit. A display that uses an undocumented controller or custom wiring may take more work to reuse than the enclosure or buttons. Treat compatibility as a device-specific investigation, not an assumption.

3. Convert a wired USB game controller to Bluetooth
Can an ESP32 turn a wired controller into Bluetooth?
Potentially, but this is the most project-specific idea here. A secondary report describes an ESP32-S3 USB-host design that presents a wired controller as a Bluetooth device. The exact controller, board, firmware, and wiring matter; do not assume another controller or ESP32 board will work the same way.

Check the original project documentation for those details before buying parts or modifying a controller. The board must support the USB host role the design requires, and Espressif’s documentation makes clear that ESP32 variants have different hardware characteristics. This is a better fit for someone comfortable tracing interfaces and adapting firmware than for a first ESP32 project.
4. Reflash a compatible smart-home gadget
Can I flash new firmware onto this old smart plug?
Sometimes. A smart-home device that already contains a compatible ESP-family chip may be reflashable with alternative firmware such as Tasmota. But the product’s age or appearance does not establish compatibility: check its actual chip, board, pin access, firmware image, and power design.

| Project | Original function retained | What you need to verify | Effort and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared bridge | The original device continues to perform its existing functions; selected controls gain network access. | That the remote uses IR, the relevant commands can be handled, and an emitter can reach the receiver. ESPHome’s project category does not guarantee protocol support. | Often a more approachable option if the control interface is understood and the device can be operated without opening it. |
| Synchronized clock | Potentially the enclosure, display, buttons, or speaker, depending on their interfaces. | How the display is driven and whether the controls or speaker can be reused. | Often approachable for a low-voltage device, but display compatibility can make the work highly specific. |
| USB controller to Bluetooth | The controller’s input hardware, if the design supports that exact controller. | USB-host capability on the specific board, plus the project’s controller, firmware, and wiring details. | Advanced and project-specific; board differences matter. |
| Smart-home firmware reflash | Potentially the device’s existing hardware and functions, subject to firmware compatibility. | Exact chip and board, pin access, image, backup and recovery options, and whether mains voltage is involved. | Can require serial flashing and soldering; opening or flashing a mains-powered product carries serious electrical risk. |
This is a qualitative comparison based on interface access and safety constraints, not a measured difficulty ranking. The first two ideas are usually easier to approach when the device is low-voltage and its interfaces are identifiable. USB-host conversion and internal smart-home modifications call for more device-specific research.

Prepare the board, firmware, and recovery plan
- Identify the hardware. Confirm the exact ESP chip and board, then check the required peripheral or interface against that board’s specifications. Flash size and other board characteristics can affect configuration.
- Read the project’s device-specific instructions. A project category or example demonstrates an approach; it does not establish compatibility with your gadget.
- Back up and plan recovery where possible. Tasmota’s flashing documentation includes firmware-backup steps. Determine how you would restore the original setup before overwriting it.
- Use a suitable programming setup. Serial flashing may require a USB adapter, and some boards need soldered connections. Tasmota’s ESP32 guide recommends a separate supply capable of at least 500 mA for the documented flashing setup; this is guidance for that setup, not a universal power rating for every ESP32 project. See the Tasmota ESP32 guide.
- Keep mains-powered devices closed and disconnected during work. Tasmota’s documentation warns: “DO NOT CONNECT DEVICES TO MAINS AC POWER WHILE THE COVER IS OPEN AND CIRCUIT BOARD IS EXPOSED!!!” It also states: “NEVER TRY TO FLASH WHILE YOUR DEVICE IS CONNECTED TO MAINS POWER!!!” If you do not have the relevant electrical skills, choose a low-voltage gadget that you can safely disconnect and open.
Which project should you try first?
Choose the gadget whose interface you can identify and whose power source you can handle safely. An infrared bridge avoids modifying the controlled appliance if an emitter can reach it; a low-voltage clock can be a good reuse project if its display is understandable. Save USB-host experiments and internal smart-plug reflashing for cases where you have verified the exact hardware and can follow an appropriate recovery and safety plan.
