4 Movies and Shows You May Enjoy More If You Forget Everything You Know

Some screen adaptations work best when you let them be their own stories instead of grading them against every detail of a comic, book, or real-life source. These four picks—Lanterns, Friday Night Lights, The Godfather, and Jaws—take different paths: a grounded crime mystery, a football-centered drama, a compressed crime-family saga, and a tightly focused thriller.

How to approach these adaptations

“Forget everything you know” does not mean that the source material is irrelevant or that every change is an improvement. It means approaching each screen version on its own terms: consider what kind of story it is telling, then decide whether its differences from the source add to your enjoyment.

The four examples suit different tastes. Lanterns is framed around an Earth-based investigation; Friday Night Lights uses football as the setting for a broader television drama; The Godfather condenses a sprawling novel; and Jaws turns a novel into a more focused suspense thriller.

Lanterns: a Green Lantern story grounded in an Earth mystery

Comic readers might expect Lanterns to be a space-spanning superhero adventure. Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as based on Green Lantern and centers its premise on Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a mystery on Earth. That gives the show a crime-mystery frame rather than making cosmic spectacle the only point of comparison. Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom is the official source for the series’ comic basis and premise.

The grounded-crime characterization is an interpretive description of the show’s approach, not a claim that the comics lack other kinds of stories. If you are curious about the series, it may help to set aside the expectation that it must behave like a space opera and follow the investigation it puts at the center.

Friday Night Lights: three versions, not one faithful retelling

Friday Night Lights has a book, a film, and a television series, and they do not tell the same story in the same way. The film dramatizes the Permian Panthers and their 1988 season, while taking creative liberties. The television series keeps the title and football setting but puts more weight on broader melodrama and off-field relationships. It is better approached as a looser reimagining than as a close retelling of the book.

That distinction makes the series a sensible choice if you want a football-centered ensemble drama rather than a scene-by-scene recreation of a particular season. Viewers who come primarily for the real-world account may find the differences more noticeable; viewers open to the setting as a starting point can engage with the series on its own dramatic terms.

The Godfather: a novel compressed into a film saga

Mario Puzo’s novel covers more of the Corleone family’s story than the film can include. The screen version condenses the material and trims character backstories, turning a broader narrative into a more concentrated film. Puzo co-authored the screenplay with Francis Ford Coppola, making this an adaptation shaped with the novelist’s direct involvement.

The useful comparison is not a contest over which version is universally better. The novel has room for material the film leaves out; the film’s compression gives its story a distinct focus and pace. Each can be approached as a complete work in its own form.

Jaws: a tighter suspense story than the novel

Peter Benchley’s novel includes storylines involving Ellen Brody, Matt Hooper, and the mayor. Steven Spielberg’s film takes a tighter route, concentrating its attention on suspense and the pursuit at sea. That narrower focus is central to why the film can work so well as a thriller without reproducing every thread from the book.

If you enjoy the film’s concentrated tension, you can leave the novel’s additional storylines aside and still appreciate the screen version. If the differences intrigue you, Benchley’s novel makes a natural companion: read it for the contrast in emphasis, not because one version makes the other mandatory.

Which one should you try first?

Pick What kind of screen story to expect Source relationship
Lanterns Grounded crime mystery Based on Green Lantern; the official premise centers an Earth-based investigation by Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Friday Night Lights Football-centered ensemble melodrama The film dramatizes a team and season; the television series uses the setting more loosely and emphasizes off-field relationships.
The Godfather Crime-family saga A condensed adaptation of Puzo’s broader novel; Puzo co-authored the screenplay.
Jaws Focused suspense thriller The film narrows the emphasis compared with the novel’s additional character storylines.

Choose by the experience you want, not by how closely you expect the screen version to copy its source. The point of these examples is that adaptation can mean changing the focus, scale, or emphasis—and a changed story can still stand on its own.
