4 Hidden Trade-Offs When You Leave Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile for a Cheaper Plan

Switching from a big three carrier to a prepaid or MVNO plan can cut your bill, but the price is only one line of the contract. Four things are easy to miss: how your data is treated when the network is busy, how far your coverage really reaches, which extras survive the move, and what your old account costs you on the way out. None of these is a guaranteed loss. Each is a place where plans differ, so each needs checking against the actual terms of the plan you’re considering.

“Leave” here means moving from Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile to a lower-cost prepaid or MVNO (a provider that rents network capacity from a larger carrier). No single destination is assumed, so nothing below claims that every cheaper plan has the same restrictions. The examples come from the big carriers’ own published terms and from an FCC report. They show where to look. They don’t describe your replacement plan.

1. Data treatment when the network is busy

“Unlimited” does not mean every plan gets the same treatment at every moment. Verizon’s current plan information says that on some plans, data may be temporarily slower than other traffic during congestion once you pass a monthly threshold. The thresholds differ by plan, and hotspot use is treated separately. The FCC’s Communications Marketplace Report (FCC 24-136) also describes tiered unlimited plans, with different allowances at different price points.

What this does and doesn’t establish:

  • It shows that the plan name tells you little. The data-management section of the terms tells you more.
  • It does not show that all MVNOs are deprioritized, or that you will notice a slowdown. Many users never reach a threshold, and congestion is local and temporary.

What to check: whether the plan has a premium-data threshold, what happens after it, and whether video streams at a reduced quality.

2. Coverage and off-network access

A provider saying it “uses” a big carrier’s network doesn’t prove you’ll get identical coverage or roaming. Even the carriers themselves rely on partners in some places. AT&T states: “We provide coverage for most of the country using our own network and for some of the places where we don’t have our own network we provide coverage by contracting with a carrier who has coverage in that area.”

AT&T’s support page on domestic off-network data goes further. It limits off-network data to the lesser of 100 MB or 20% of your total usage in a bill period. It also says that continued use past that point may cost you data access until the next bill period. That page was last updated December 7, 2022, and it is AT&T’s own statement, not an independent assessment. Confirm the current agreement before treating the limit as current. The takeaway is that off-network rules exist and can be strict. It is not a claim about what your new provider does.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

What to check:

  • Signal at home, at work, and along routes and destinations you travel regularly. Use the provider’s own coverage map, and ideally a trial or short first month if one is offered.
  • Whether the plan includes roaming, and if so, any caps on it.

One development is worth knowing about but not counting on. On May 14, 2026, AT&T said that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon had an agreement in principle to form a joint venture using satellite direct-to-device technology to address coverage gaps. Definitive agreements and customary closing conditions were still outstanding. It isn’t a product you can buy today, and it doesn’t tell you how a particular MVNO plan would get satellite access.

3. Hotspot, international, and other extras

Perks are rarely portable. Verizon’s current plan information lists different hotspot allotments and post-allowance speed reductions by plan, along with different international roaming terms. The FCC report gives a historical example: in its account of a 2023 plan, T-Mobile’s Go5G Plus included 50 GB of mobile hotspot data and up to 15 GB of high-speed data in Mexico and Canada. That is a 2023 snapshot from the FCC, not a current offer, so don’t use it to compare today’s plans.

  • International: which countries are covered, and the data or day allowances.
  • Video quality and any streaming perks bundled with your current plan.
  • Extra lines for watches, tablets, or other connected devices.

4. Your phone and your final bill

This is where an apparent saving can shrink. Verizon’s customer agreement (dated September 26, 2025) says that if you cancel service while a device is on a monthly installment agreement, you should check whether the balance must be paid immediately. Also look for:

The same agreement says taxes, governmental charges, and Verizon surcharges can change. It states that as of August 1, 2025, they could add 15% to 50% to standard monthly access and other charges for the covered services. That is Verizon-specific language, so don’t assume it applies to other carriers or accounts. It does mean you should compare the all-in monthly cost of a new plan, not just the headline price.

Keeping your phone can cut costs, since a compatible unlocked phone may let you switch without buying a replacement. Verizon publishes bring-your-own-device information for its prepaid service, but that doesn’t prove compatibility with another provider. Check the destination carrier’s requirements with your phone’s model number before you port your number.

A quick comparison checklist

When you have two real plans in front of you, such as your current one and a candidate, fill in these rows from the current plan documents:

Item Current plan Candidate plan
Monthly cost including taxes and fees
Premium-data threshold and post-threshold behavior
Coverage and roaming at your usual locations
Hotspot amount and speed after allowance
International destinations and allowances
Phone compatibility and unlock status
Net cost of remaining installments and lost credits

No neutral, current comparison of named MVNO plans’ priority rules is available here, so those cells have to come from each provider’s own terms. If the cheaper plan holds up on every row you care about, the switch is likely worth it. If one row fails, such as weak signal at home or a large device balance, that single row can decide the question.
