Gmail gives you four practical controls for reducing unwanted mail: block repeat senders, report spam or phishing, build narrowly targeted filters, and audit forwarding, filters, and account access. They improve inbox hygiene and give Google feedback about abusive messages, but they are not a guarantee that every scam—or any AI-generated scam—will be stopped before delivery. The steps below use Gmail on a computer; Google’s labels can change as the interface is updated.
What these Gmail controls actually do
Each control handles a different part of the problem. Blocking is aimed at one known sender. Reporting classifies a message so Gmail can learn from it. Filters apply your own search criteria to a group of messages. Security checks look for settings an attacker could use to hide or redirect mail. Choosing the right control matters because the consequences range from moving one sender’s future messages to deleting or forwarding every message that matches a broad rule.

| Control | Acts on | Possible result | Main risk or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block sender | One email address | Future messages from that address go to Spam | The sender can still send; messages are not erased at the source |
| Report spam or phishing | A message you identify as abusive or deceptive | Gmail classifies it and can use a copy for analysis | It is feedback after receipt, not a promise of pre-delivery blocking |
| Custom filter | Messages matching search criteria | Label, archive, delete, star, or forward | A broad rule can hide legitimate mail; forwarding and deletion need extra care |
| Security audit | Forwarding, filters, account access, and verification settings | Find and remove changes you did not make | It protects account control rather than identifying every scam message |
For a separate sender-side issue, Google’s Email sender guidelines describe SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication. Those are domain-authentication requirements for people and organizations sending mail to Gmail, not switches you can turn on in your personal inbox.

1. Block repeat senders so their future mail goes to Spam
Blocking is the quickest response when the same address keeps sending unwanted messages. Google states that “After you block a sender, all future emails from them go to Spam.” This does not stop the sender from transmitting mail, and it does not cover a scammer who changes addresses.

Block an address from an open message
- Open the message in Gmail on your computer.
- Click the More menu (the three vertical dots) next to the reply controls.
- Choose Block [sender], then confirm.
Gmail routes later messages from that address to Spam. If you are unsure whether a message is genuinely abusive, use reporting instead of blocking alone; a block is a personal routing rule, while a report gives Gmail a classification signal.
Review or undo blocked addresses
- Click the gear icon and select See all settings.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Find the address in the blocked list and choose Unblock if you want its mail handled normally again.
Google’s computer instructions are documented in Block an email address in Gmail. Check the Spam folder periodically if an important sender was blocked by mistake; Gmail’s Spam retention and deletion behavior can change with product policy.
2. Report suspicious mail instead of replying
Reporting is the right action when a message looks like a credential trap, fake invoice, impersonation, or another form of abuse. For a message that asks for personal information, Google advises that you do not reply or open links and that you report it as phishing. Reporting spam also helps Gmail identify similar messages more efficiently; Google says a copy may be analyzed to help protect users.

Report ordinary spam
- Select the message in your inbox, or open it.
- Click the Report spam button (the stop-sign icon with an exclamation mark).
- Confirm the report when Gmail asks. The message moves out of the inbox.
Report a phishing attempt
- Do not click links, download attachments, or answer the sender.
- Open the message’s More menu.
- Select Report phishing and follow the confirmation prompt.
Use the phishing option for deception aimed at stealing information, not merely for a newsletter you no longer want. Google’s instructions and the current menu wording are at Report spam in Gmail. If you opened a suspicious link or entered a password, change that password from a trusted page and review account security rather than relying on the report alone.
3. Create a targeted filter for patterns you recognize
A filter is useful when unwanted messages share a reliable characteristic—such as a sender domain, a phrase in the subject, or a recurring recipient address. Filters are deterministic: Gmail applies the actions you choose to every message that matches. That makes them more powerful than a one-off report and more capable of causing collateral damage.
Build the rule from Gmail’s search options
- On a computer, click the Show search options icon at the right side of Gmail’s search box.
- Enter one or more criteria, such as From, To, Subject, words included, words excluded, message size, or whether an attachment is present.
- Click Search to inspect the messages that currently match. Remove or narrow a criterion if legitimate mail appears.
- Click the search-options icon again and choose Create filter.
- Select the action you want, then click Create filter to save it.
Choose the least destructive action that solves the problem
- Apply the label: keeps mail visible while grouping it for review.
- Archive it: removes a match from the inbox but keeps it in Gmail and searchable.
- Delete it: sends matches to Trash. Reserve this for a pattern you have verified; automatic deletion can hide a genuine receipt or account notice.
- Star it: marks messages for attention and is useful for triage rather than blocking.
- Forward it: sends matching new messages to another address. Confirm the destination and understand that forwarding filters affect new messages.
For example, a filter matching an exact sender address and a distinctive subject phrase is safer than one matching a generic word such as “invoice.” A domain-wide rule can catch more abuse but also more legitimate correspondence, especially when a service uses the same domain for marketing and account notices. Google’s full filter guidance is in Create rules to filter your emails.

Test and maintain the filter
Open Settings > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses to edit, disable, or delete a rule. Check its matches after a few days and after any change to a subscription or service. If you selected deletion or forwarding, verify the result with a harmless test message before leaving the rule active. Never create a forwarding rule to an address you do not recognize.
4. Audit settings that can hide or redirect mail
Some inbox problems are not caused by Gmail’s spam classifier at all. An unfamiliar forwarding destination can copy mail elsewhere, while a hidden filter can archive or delete security alerts before you see them. A security audit is therefore part of spam protection, especially after a suspected account takeover.
Inspect forwarding and filters
- Open Settings > See all settings.
- Review the Forwarding and POP/IMAP area. Remove any forwarding address you did not add and check whether forwarding is enabled.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses. Look for rules you do not recognize, particularly rules that delete, archive, mark as read, or forward messages.
- Disable or delete suspicious rules, then save changes where Gmail presents a save button.
Review account access and turn on 2-Step Verification
Use Google’s Security Checkup to review signed-in devices, recent security events, connected access, and verification options. Enable 2-Step Verification and complete its setup with a method you control. Two-step verification does not classify incoming mail, but it makes it harder for an attacker to change filters or forwarding after obtaining your password.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to combine the four tweaks without creating new problems
- Report first: classify a suspicious message as spam or phishing without interacting with it.
- Block repeat addresses: use a block when the same sender keeps returning and you do not need its mail.
- Filter only known patterns: search and inspect matches before creating a rule; start with labeling or archiving if you are uncertain.
- Audit account controls: check forwarding, filters, access, and 2-Step Verification after any suspected compromise.
- Recheck periodically: review blocked addresses and filters when your subscriptions change, and look in Spam or Trash if an expected message disappears.
This order separates feedback to Gmail from personal routing rules. It also gives you a recovery path: a mistaken block can be undone, and a mistaken filter can be edited or deleted from settings.

What “AI scam protection” does—and does not—mean here
Scammers can use generated text, images, or voice to make messages look polished, but the Gmail controls above evaluate sender behavior, message signals, your reports, and rules you define. The available Google documentation does not establish a special setting that detects every AI-generated scam or guarantees that suspicious mail will never reach the inbox. Treat unexpected urgency, requests for passwords or payment, mismatched sender domains, and unfamiliar attachments as warning signs regardless of how professional the wording appears.

SPF, DKIM, and DMARC can help receiving systems authenticate a sending domain when the sender has configured them correctly. They are not consumer-facing Gmail toggles and cannot by themselves prove that a message’s request is legitimate. For high-impact requests, verify the person or organization through a known channel instead of using the contact details in the message.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
A legitimate message went to Spam
Open Spam, select the message, and choose Not spam. If the sender was blocked, remove the address under Filters and Blocked Addresses. Check for a filter that also archives or deletes that sender’s messages.
A filter is hiding important mail
Go to Settings > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses, locate the rule, and choose edit to narrow its criteria or delete to remove it. Search Gmail using the same criteria to find archived matches. If the rule deleted messages, inspect Trash before Gmail permanently removes them.
Unexpected forwarding appears
Remove the unknown forwarding address, disable the associated filter, and complete Security Checkup. Change your Google Account password from a trusted device and enable 2-Step Verification if it was not already active. Review recent account activity for other changes you did not make.
A scammer keeps changing addresses
Blocking one address will not cover new addresses. Report each suspicious message, then create a narrowly defined filter only when a stable pattern exists. Keep the rule reversible and avoid deleting broad categories of mail automatically.
