When a Windows PC feels slow, start by observing it while the slowdown is happening. Task Manager gives the quickest whole-system clue; Resource Monitor narrows the affected resource; Process Explorer explains an otherwise opaque process; and Autoruns exposes startup programs. If the symptom is tied to repeated file or Registry activity, Process Monitor provides an event trace.
Start with Task Manager
Microsoft describes Task Manager as “an application that serves as a system monitor and startup manager for Windows,” with information about CPU load, memory usage, disk activity, network usage and startup applications. Open it while the computer feels slow, then use the Processes view to sort by the resource that appears constrained.

- Open Task Manager.
- Stay on Processes and click the CPU, Memory, Disk or Network column heading.
- Watch the list during the slowdown rather than after it has passed.
- Note the process that remains near the top and whether the same resource stays busy.
A high percentage is a clue, not a diagnosis. A process may briefly spike without causing the overall problem, so use the result to decide what to inspect next.
Use Resource Monitor to narrow the bottleneck
Resource Monitor is the detailed follow-up when Task Manager shows a broad CPU, memory, disk or network problem. Compare per-process activity with the exact moment the PC feels slow. This helps distinguish a genuinely busy process from a misleading overall percentage.

What to look for
- CPU: identify which process is consuming processor time when the delay occurs.
- Memory: compare individual process use with the system’s overall memory pressure.
- Disk: check which process is generating activity during pauses or long loads.
- Network: identify the process associated with sustained traffic when online tasks lag.
Resource Monitor answers the question “which process is busy right now?” more precisely than a single system-wide percentage.
Inspect an unexplained process with Process Explorer
When Task Manager’s name does not explain the behavior, Microsoft’s Process Explorer provides process-level evidence. It shows active processes, the accounts that own them, open handles, loaded DLLs and memory-mapped files. Its search can find which process is holding a particular handle or DLL.

A practical investigation
- Open Process Explorer while the slowdown is reproducible.
- Locate the process identified by Task Manager or Resource Monitor.
- Check its owning account and the files or DLLs associated with it.
- Use search when you know a handle or DLL involved in the symptom and need to find the owning process.
This is an inspection step, not a reason to terminate an unfamiliar process. Confirm what it belongs to before changing anything.

The Microsoft Learn listing identifies Process Explorer version 17.14 (Microsoft, 2026), a 3.5 MB download (Microsoft Learn, 2026). It lists support for Windows 11 and later and Windows Server 2019 and later.

Check startup drag with Autoruns
Autoruns answers a different question: which programs are configured to run during boot or login? It lists those entries and shows the Registry and file locations that configure their automatic start behavior.
- Open Autoruns after you have observed the slowdown and want to investigate boot or login delays.
- Review third-party entries and identify each publisher and function.
- Disable only an entry whose purpose you understand and whose automatic launch is unnecessary.
- Restart or sign out, then check whether the startup symptom changes.
Do not disable an entry solely because its name looks unfamiliar. Autoruns exposes configuration; it does not, by itself, prove that an entry is harmful or responsible for the slowdown.

If the slowdown repeatedly coincides with file, Registry, process, thread or DLL activity, Process Monitor can capture the evidence. Run it briefly, filter to the suspected process or path, reproduce the problem, and stop capture as soon as the behavior is recorded.

- Start Process Monitor before reproducing the symptom.
- Apply a filter for the suspected process or path so unrelated events do not overwhelm the trace.
- Reproduce the slowdown once.
- Stop capture and examine the matching file, Registry, process, thread or DLL events.
This is a focused trace rather than a permanent monitor. Capture only the interval needed to explain the symptom.

The safest sequence is observe first, identify the owning process, then investigate startup or file and Registry activity as appropriate. Task Manager is the quickest starting point; Process Explorer and Process Monitor provide progressively deeper evidence, while Autoruns addresses startup configuration separately.
