Short answer: A 3nm process is newer than a 5nm process and usually gives chip designers a better efficiency, performance, and transistor-density starting point. It does not guarantee that every 3nm phone, computer, or graphics chip will be faster, cooler, or longer-lasting than every 5nm product.
The labels are foundry-specific process-generation names, not literal measurements shared across manufacturers. The useful comparison is between complete chips running the same workload, with architecture, clocks, power limits, memory, software, packaging, and cooling included.

What 3nm and 5nm mean
“3nm” and “5nm” identify semiconductor manufacturing generations. They are names used by individual foundries to describe a collection of design rules, transistor structures, wiring improvements, density targets, and manufacturing technologies. They do not promise that every critical transistor dimension measures exactly three or five nanometers.
A TSMC 3nm process is therefore not numerically identical to a Samsung 3nm process. Even two processes carrying the same nominal name can have different transistor libraries, design rules, density, voltage characteristics, yield, and performance targets. For a fair technical comparison, stay within one foundry’s published family: TSMC N3 against TSMC N5, or Samsung’s 3nm generation against its own 5nm generation.

The node name describes the manufacturing opportunity available to a chip designer. The finished product still depends on how that opportunity is used. A designer may spend the available transistor budget on more cache, wider execution units, extra graphics cores, artificial-intelligence engines, or lower operating voltage. Those choices can make two chips on the same node behave very differently.
Published process-level results
The following figures come from foundry announcements and technology documentation. They are process-level claims under each vendor’s stated comparison conditions, not universal results for retail chips.
| Foundry and process | Baseline | Performance claim | Power claim | Density or area claim | Publication context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung first-generation 3nm | Samsung 5nm | Up to 23% higher performance | Up to 45% lower power consumption | 16% smaller area | Samsung Electronics announcement, June 30, 2022; first-generation 3nm GAA |
| TSMC N3 | TSMC N5 | Not stated in the cited N3 announcement as a single speed figure | 30–35% lower power at the same speed | Up to 1.6× logic-density gain | TSMC announcement, 2022 |
| TSMC N3E | TSMC N5 | Approximately 20% higher speed | More than 30% power savings | Approximately 1.6× logic-density increase | TSMC official technology page, accessed 2026 |
| Samsung second-generation 3nm target | Samsung 5nm | Not stated | Not stated | 35% smaller-area target | Target supplied for the second-generation 3nm process; not a universal finished-chip result |
Samsung’s figures compare its first-generation 3nm process with its 5nm process. TSMC’s N3 and N3E figures compare different members of its 3nm family with N5. It would be misleading to combine the largest percentage from one vendor with the largest percentage from the other and present them as one cross-vendor benchmark.

Is a 3nm chip faster than a 5nm chip?
Usually, a comparable design can achieve higher performance on 3nm, but the node alone does not decide the winner. A newer process can provide faster transistor switching, lower voltage at a given speed, and more transistors within a similar die area. Those advantages give architects more options for increasing peak or sustained throughput.
The measured gain depends on the process variant and the design target. Samsung reported a performance uplift for its first-generation 3nm GAA process relative to its 5nm process. TSMC’s N3E documentation reports an approximate speed improvement relative to N5. These statements describe what the manufacturing process can enable under specified conditions; they do not mean that every product using the node runs at the same percentage above a 5nm product.
Why a 5nm chip can still win
A well-designed 5nm chip can outperform a 3nm chip when it has a stronger microarchitecture, more cores, larger or faster cache, higher sustained power limits, better memory bandwidth, or software tuned more effectively for its hardware. Product makers may also use a 3nm process to reduce energy rather than raise clock speed, so a 3nm device can be faster only in some workloads while another 5nm device leads in a different test.

Peak benchmark scores are especially easy to misread. A short test may allow a chip to run at a high burst frequency before thermal or power controls intervene. Sustained rendering, compiling, gaming, or video export reveals whether the package and cooling system can maintain that performance over time.

Does 3nm use less battery power?
At the same performance, 3nm generally needs less chip power than 5nm. Lower power reduces the energy drawn during a workload and can leave more capacity for the rest of a phone or computer. At the same power limit, the efficiency improvement can instead be exchanged for higher frequency, more cores, or additional accelerators.
The foundry figures in the table are not battery-life guarantees. Battery runtime is determined by the entire platform: display brightness and refresh rate, modem activity, memory, storage, operating-system scheduling, radio signal strength, background applications, and battery capacity. A product manufacturer can spend process savings on a brighter display or faster clocks, leaving measured runtime little changed.
How to interpret battery claims
- Equal performance: If two chips complete the same task in the same time and the 3nm design draws less power, the 3nm platform should consume less energy for that task.
- Equal power: If both chips are restricted to the same power budget, the 3nm design may complete more work or sustain a higher clock.
- Different platform settings: A 3nm phone with a larger display, higher refresh rate, or more aggressive performance mode can use more energy than a conservative 5nm phone.
- Whole-device measurements: Compare battery drain during the same repeatable activity rather than inferring runtime from the process name.
Power figures should also be read with their conditions attached. Samsung’s percentage is an “up to” process comparison, while TSMC’s N3 claim specifies lower power at the same speed. Those are useful indicators of direction and scale, but they are not interchangeable tests.
Will a 3nm chip run cooler?
It can run cooler for the same workload and performance, but there is no universal 3nm temperature. Electrical power consumed by the chip ultimately becomes heat in the package. If a 3nm implementation performs a fixed task while drawing less power, it should release less heat during that task.
Actual temperature is controlled by more than the process generation. Voltage, clock frequency, workload, die size, package construction, thermal-interface material, vapor chamber or heatsink capacity, firmware limits, fan speed, and ambient temperature all matter. Two products using the same node can therefore report very different surface or junction temperatures.

Why a denser chip is not automatically cooler
Higher transistor density places more circuitry in a smaller area. If the design uses that density to add functionality without raising total power, cooling may become easier because the workload finishes sooner or the average power falls. If the designer uses it for higher clocks and more active logic, power density can rise and create a more concentrated heat source.
Temperature measurements also need a defined location and test duration. A phone’s external case temperature, a processor’s reported junction temperature, and a laptop’s heatsink temperature are different measurements. The cited foundry material does not establish one standardized temperature difference between 3nm and 5nm, so any article or product claim should identify the device, sensor, workload, duration, and ambient conditions.
What higher transistor density changes
Process scaling lets designers place more logic in a given area or keep similar logic in a smaller die. TSMC reports up to a 1.6-times logic-density gain for N3 compared with N5, and its N3E page gives an approximately similar density increase against N5. Samsung reported a smaller area for its first-generation 3nm process and separately described a smaller-area target for its second-generation 3nm process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Density can be used in three main ways:
- More capability at the same die size: Additional CPU or graphics resources, cache, media blocks, or neural-processing hardware can fit without enlarging the silicon footprint.
- A smaller die for the same design: Fewer wafers or more dies per wafer may be possible, although the final cost still depends on wafer price, yield, testing, and packaging.
- More headroom for power management: The designer can keep performance similar while reducing voltage or active transistor count.
Logic density is not the same as total product density. Memory arrays, analog circuits, input/output interfaces, power-delivery structures, and other blocks may scale differently from standard logic. A finished system-on-chip can therefore show a different area or cost outcome from the headline logic-density number.
Node labels, transistor architecture, and process variants
Foundries release several variants within a nominal generation. TSMC’s N3 and N3E are related but not identical choices, with N3E described as an optimized 3nm node. Samsung’s first-generation 3nm announcement describes gate-all-around transistor technology and compares it with Samsung 5nm. These distinctions matter because a later or optimized variant may prioritize yield, design flexibility, voltage behavior, or performance differently from the first release.
When reading a specification sheet, identify the exact process designation rather than stopping at “3nm.” Ask whether the chip uses the first or a later variant, whether the comparison is against the same foundry’s 5nm process, and whether the quoted result is a density, power, or speed metric. A process-generation label without that context is too broad to predict product behavior.

Production timing and where these nodes are used
TSMC states that N5 entered volume production in 2020 and N3 entered high-volume production in 2022. Samsung’s process overview lists 3nm mass production as starting in 2022. Both foundries position these technologies for smartphone and high-performance-computing applications.
Production status does not by itself reveal which products are fastest or most efficient. Early products may use conservative clocks while manufacturers validate yield and packaging. Later products may use a refined process variant and different design targets. Availability can also differ by region, device class, and supply agreement, so a node’s launch year should not be treated as a ranking of all chips released afterward.

Use this procedure when deciding between a 3nm product and a 5nm product. It prevents the node name from replacing the measurements that matter to your workload.
- Identify the exact process and chip model. Record the foundry, process variant, architecture generation, core configuration, cache, memory type, and package. “3nm” or “5nm” alone is insufficient.
- Choose the same workload. Use an identical application, project, game scene, video file, or benchmark version on both systems. Keep quality settings, resolution, compiler options, and operating-system version consistent.
- Measure sustained performance. Run the workload long enough to reach steady behavior, not only a short burst. Record completion time, average frame rate, or throughput after the initial boost period.
- Record total platform power. If possible, measure power at the wall or system input and separate idle, active, and charging effects. A chip’s advertised power number may not include memory, regulators, display, storage, or cooling fans.
- Track battery capacity and drain. For mobile devices, start at the same charge level, disable unrelated background activity, use the same display settings, and compare the percentage lost during the identical run.
- Measure temperature consistently. Use the same ambient temperature, sensor location, workload duration, and cooling setup. Note whether the reading is a reported junction value or an external surface measurement.
- Check firmware and performance modes. Balanced, battery-saver, and high-performance modes can change voltage, clocks, fan policy, and sustained limits enough to overwhelm a node difference.
- Interpret the result by workload. A 3nm advantage in a CPU test may not appear in a graphics, modem, storage, or application-launch test. Report the tasks separately instead of creating one universal winner.
Common mistakes when comparing 3nm and 5nm
Treating the labels as literal dimensions
The numbers are generation names. They should not be used to calculate transistor size directly or to assume that a Samsung 3nm transistor and a TSMC 3nm transistor have the same geometry.
Combining vendor percentages
Samsung’s power and performance figures and TSMC’s power and density figures come from different process families and comparison methods. They describe each vendor’s own baseline and should remain attributed to that vendor.

Assuming process equals architecture
A node does not specify instruction-set design, core width, cache policy, graphics architecture, memory controller, or software optimization. Those elements often determine application performance more directly than the manufacturing label.
Best Value
Using a peak clock as a speed guarantee
Peak frequency may last only seconds if the device reaches a thermal or power limit. Sustained throughput is a better indicator for long gaming sessions, rendering, scientific workloads, and large software builds.
Calling lower chip power lower whole-device power
Even if the processor is efficient, the display, modem, memory, storage, and peripherals may dominate a particular activity. Battery tests must measure the complete platform.
Which process should you choose?
Choose a specific product based on measured behavior and your workload, not the node label by itself.

| Longest battery life | Whole-device drain in your real apps, display settings, and network conditions | Screen, modem, software, and battery size may dominate energy use |

| Workstation or server throughput | Memory bandwidth, core count, sustained power limit, cooling, and software scaling | A 5nm design with more resources can beat a 3nm design in a parallel workload |
A 3nm product is the more promising starting point when two designs are otherwise comparable and the manufacturer uses the process for lower voltage, higher sustained performance, or additional functionality. A 5nm product can be the better choice when its architecture, cooling, software support, price, or availability is stronger.
Bottom line
3nm is a newer process generation than 5nm, and foundry data shows meaningful potential for better performance, lower power, and higher density. The benefits are conditional: Samsung and TSMC publish results for their own process families, and the percentages cannot be merged into one universal score. Lower power can reduce heat for the same workload, but clocks, voltage, packaging, cooling, firmware, and ambient conditions set the temperature you actually experience. Compare complete chips under the same sustained workload to find the real advantage.
