Keep opened filament in a genuinely sealed container with desiccant, away from heat, sunlight and humid air. Return each spool to that container as soon as a print is finished. If the filament has already absorbed moisture, dry it at a temperature and for a duration recommended for that material before storing it again; a bag or passive dry box prevents new moisture uptake but does not reliably dry a wet spool.
Why keeping filament dry matters
Most plastic filament is hygroscopic to some degree: it can take up water from the surrounding air. The rate varies substantially by material. Prusa notes that PLA is less affected by moisture uptake than polyamide (nylon), while UltiMaker identifies TPU95A and nylon as particularly susceptible to symptoms such as stringing and oozing. PETG, CPE and PET CF can also show moisture-related problems, although generally to a lesser extent than the most sensitive materials.

Water in the filament turns into steam as the hot end melts it. That can make extrusion less consistent and may produce rough or pitted surfaces, extra wisps between features, popping sounds, or weaker parts. UltiMaker also reports that moisture can reduce surface quality and mechanical properties. These signs are not exclusive to damp filament—incorrect temperature, retraction, a worn nozzle or poor bed setup can cause similar defects—so treat moisture as one possible cause rather than proof by itself.

The five storage tricks
1. Reseal every opened spool immediately
Once a factory package is opened, move the spool into a resealable bag or another container that closes with a continuous seal. UltiMaker recommends a resealable bag with desiccant or humidity-controlled storage, and Prusa lists vacuum bags as another storage option. Press excess air out of a soft bag before closing it, but do not treat the act of squeezing air out as a substitute for a leak-free closure.
- Cut or open the original package carefully so the spool remains clean and dry while you set up storage.
- Place the spool in the resealable bag or container with its desiccant pack.
- Close the seal fully, checking the entire zipper or gasket rather than only one corner.
- Secure the loose filament end in the spool’s retaining hole or clip so it cannot unwind and tangle.
- Label the bag with the material, color and any drying instructions printed by the manufacturer.
A vacuum bag can reduce the amount of humid air around a spool, but vacuum sealing is a storage method, not a drying cycle. If the plastic is already wet, seal quality only slows further exposure; it does not remove the absorbed water.
2. Put desiccant inside the sealed container
Desiccant absorbs water vapor in the air trapped around the spool. Both UltiMaker and Prusa identify desiccant as part of dry storage, including silica-gel bags. Place the packet inside the same sealed bag, box or dry cabinet as the filament, where it can act on the enclosed air.

Do not infer that a particular number of packets guarantees a specific relative humidity. Performance depends on the container’s volume, how often it is opened, the starting condition of the desiccant and the moisture already present. Use packets intended for reuse or replacement according to their own instructions, and replace or regenerate them when their manufacturer says they are spent. A damp or saturated packet cannot protect a spool indefinitely.
Desiccant works best when the container is opened briefly. If you remove filament several times a day, keep only the actively used spool in a small working container and leave other spools sealed. That limits the amount of humid room air introduced each time.
3. Use a dry box when you print from the spool frequently
A dry box is useful when taking a spool in and out of a bag for every print is impractical. It encloses the spool and can let filament feed to the printer while the spool remains protected. Prusa describes its USS Drybox as slowing moisture absorption, which is the key benefit for a spool that is accessed often.

Check the design before buying or building one. Some boxes are passive containers with desiccant; others include a heater and controls intended to dry filament. A passive box reduces new exposure but will not necessarily dry a spool that has already absorbed water. Prusa specifically cautions that moist filament needs pre-drying even when it will subsequently be used in the USS Drybox.
| Storage option | Best use | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resealable bag plus desiccant | Infrequently used or spare spools | Creates a low-exposure enclosure that can be reopened and resealed | It does not dry a wet spool or guarantee a particular humidity |
| Vacuum bag plus desiccant | Longer-term storage with minimal opening | Removes much of the air around the spool and limits exchange with room air | A vacuum seal is not a drying cycle |
| Passive dry box | Spools used regularly, with feeding through a protected path | Slows moisture uptake while the spool remains enclosed | It may not include heating or active drying |
| Heated filament dryer | Spools that show moisture symptoms or need conditioning | Holds a set temperature for a set period while managing humidity | Settings are not universal; use the material maker’s guidance and the dryer’s limits |
4. Store filament cool and out of direct sunlight
Choose a cool, dry cupboard rather than a windowsill, attic, garage shelf or spot beside a radiator. UltiMaker identifies temperature, ultraviolet exposure and humidity as relevant environmental factors and provides material-specific storage ranges. Direct sunlight can heat the spool and exposes the plastic to UV; repeated heat and moisture swings are harder on storage than a stable indoor location.
Keep containers off damp floors and away from sinks, humidifiers and open windows. A sealed box in a dry room is preferable to an unsealed box in a humid room. If your workspace changes seasonally, pay extra attention during wet weather: the same open-air routine that seemed harmless in winter can load filament with moisture faster during a humid summer.

5. Return the spool to storage promptly after printing
Do not leave a finished spool on the printer overnight by default. As soon as the print is complete and the spool is cool enough to handle safely, secure the filament end, put the spool back in its bag or dry box and close the container. UltiMaker says brief ambient exposure during transfer does not significantly affect filament quality when the spool is returned promptly to a dry environment. That statement does not define a universal safe number of hours or days in room air, so make prompt resealing your routine rather than relying on a timer.
If you are changing materials during a long job, prepare the storage container before removing the spool. The fewer minutes the package remains open on the bench, the less humid air enters it. Keep the printer’s feed path as short as practical while the spool is outside storage, then put it away instead of leaving it mounted for convenience.

Storage is not the same as drying
Storage prevents additional moisture from reaching the filament. Drying removes moisture that is already in the plastic. A dedicated filament-drying apparatus is designed to hold a set temperature for a set period while controlling humidity. Follow the filament manufacturer’s instructions first, then confirm that the dryer can safely maintain the required temperature.

UltiMaker’s published examples are manufacturer recommendations, not universal settings for every brand, blend or color. Use them as a starting reference only when they match your material and equipment:
| Material | UltiMaker example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | 40–50 °C for 4–8 hours | Recommendation from UltiMaker; formulations can differ |
| Nylon | 50–60 °C for 24 hours or longer | Longer drying is expected for this moisture-sensitive material |
| PETG | 65 °C for 4–8 hours, or 70 °C for 10–20 hours | Choose the range that matches the manufacturer’s instructions and your dryer |
UltiMaker notes that some especially moisture-sensitive filaments may need overnight drying or longer. Do not transfer these times to TPU, filled materials or an unfamiliar formulation without checking its label or technical data. Respect the dryer’s maximum temperature and spool compatibility; the plastic can soften, deform or fuse if heated outside the equipment’s intended range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether a spool may be damp
Look for a cluster of symptoms rather than one isolated defect:
- Fine strings or hairs between travel moves that were not present with a freshly opened spool.
- Unusual oozing, popping or tiny steam-like bursts at the nozzle.
- A rough, bubbly or inconsistent surface despite otherwise correct temperature and retraction settings.
- Parts that seem weaker or less consistent than prints made from the same material under the same settings.
- Problems that improve after a proper drying cycle and recur when the spool is left exposed.
Before drying, rule out a blocked or worn nozzle, an incorrect temperature profile, excessive retraction, a loose drive gear and slicer changes. Moisture sensitivity differs by material, so PLA showing no symptoms does not prove that nylon or TPU is equally dry.
A practical workflow for a damp spool
- Identify the exact material. Read the spool label and the manufacturer’s technical guidance. “Nylon” or “PETG” is not enough if the product is a reinforced or modified formulation with different limits.
- Confirm the dryer’s capability. Check its temperature range, timer and maximum safe spool size. Use a dedicated apparatus that can hold the chosen temperature consistently.
- Dry using the published setting. For example, UltiMaker lists PLA at 40–50 °C for 4–8 hours, nylon at 50–60 °C for 24 hours or longer, and PETG at either 65 °C for 4–8 hours or 70 °C for 10–20 hours. These are not universal recipes.
- Let the spool cool in a low-humidity environment. Do not leave the newly dried material open on the workbench while it returns to room temperature.
- Seal it immediately with desiccant. Use the bag, vacuum container or dry box you prepared before the drying cycle finished.
- Print a controlled test. Keep the same nozzle, temperature and retraction settings so you can tell whether the moisture-related symptoms have improved.
Choose a setup that matches how you print
| Your pattern | Practical setup | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One spool used occasionally | Resealable bag, desiccant and a cool cupboard | Low cost and enough protection when openings are infrequent |
| Several materials rotated each week | Individual sealed bags or boxes, each labeled, plus a separate drying option | Prevents one frequently opened container from exposing every spool |
| Long prints or daily production | Dry box that feeds filament while enclosed; verify whether it heats | Reduces repeated handling and keeps the active spool protected |
| Nylon, TPU or another moisture-sensitive material | Sealed storage plus a temperature-controlled dryer | Provides both prevention and a way to recover a spool that becomes damp |
An inexpensive hygrometer can help you observe conditions inside a storage container, but a displayed number is not a substitute for a good seal, fresh desiccant or material-specific drying instructions. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal humidity threshold that makes every filament safe.
Common mistakes that defeat dry storage
- Leaving the spool mounted between prints: The filament remains exposed to room air for an unknown duration. Put it away promptly instead.
- Assuming a dry box always dries: Confirm whether it is passive or heated. A box that only slows absorption cannot replace pre-drying.
- Reusing exhausted desiccant indefinitely: A packet that has already taken up moisture cannot protect the container as effectively. Follow its replacement or regeneration instructions.
- Drying every plastic at one temperature: PLA, nylon and PETG have different published examples. Use the spool maker’s limits rather than a universal setting.
- Blaming moisture for every print defect: Check nozzle condition, temperature, retraction and the slicer profile before changing storage or drying settings.
- Opening a large box for one spool: Store frequently used filament in a smaller container or dry box so each opening exchanges less humid air.
Maintenance checklist
- Label every spool with material and color when it enters storage.
- Check the bag zipper, gasket or lid whenever you reseal it.
- Keep desiccant in the same enclosed volume as the spool.
- Inspect for moisture-related print changes when switching to a sensitive material.
- Dry only with equipment and temperatures approved for that formulation.
- After drying, cool and reseal the spool immediately rather than leaving it exposed.
- Keep a separate active spool in a dry box if you print from it repeatedly.
This routine addresses the two different jobs involved: storage limits new moisture exposure, while a controlled drying cycle removes moisture that has already entered the filament. Applying both steps is more reliable than vacuum sealing or a passive box alone.
