The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is the Doctor Who story behind the psychic circus: the Doctor and Ace arrive at a show on Segonax where performers fear the Chief Clown, and the danger reaches beyond an ordinary sideshow. Its four installments began in December 1988 and concluded in January 1989.
What is the Doctor Who psychic circus episode?
It is The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, the fourth and final story listed for Season 25, written by Stephen Wyatt. The Doctor Who official episode guide describes the Doctor taking Ace to the Psychic Circus on Segonax. Ace hates clowns, and the performers they encounter live in fear of the Chief Clown.

The premise makes the circus more than an unusual backdrop. Its familiar attractions are paired with a threatening, uncanny atmosphere: the performers are afraid, Ace has a personal reason to dread the setting, and the Doctor’s visit becomes a confrontation with forces beyond the circus itself.

The serial was broadcast in four installments. The official episode guide lists these dates:
#1 Best Overall
- 14 December 1988
- 21 December 1988
- 28 December 1988
- 4 January 1989
That makes the “38 years ago” framing apt for its December 1988 beginning in 2026, but the story did not finish until the following calendar year.
What makes the circus concept unusual?
The story takes a setting associated with spectacle and turns it into a place of fear. The Chief Clown and the frightened performers establish a danger within the circus, while the Doctor Who anniversary feature describes the story as the Doctor “battling actual gods at a psychic circus.” That escalation—from a sinister show to a cosmic threat—is the striking combination at the heart of its premise, rather than a claim that it holds an objectively measured place among the series’ concepts.
Ace’s hatred of clowns gives the set-up a more immediate edge. The threat is not only something the Doctor investigates; it is also woven into an environment that makes his companion uncomfortable.
