There is no universal best 360 camera in 2026. The right choice depends on how much of a spherical scene you will reframe into ordinary video, where you will shoot, whether you already own DJI or GoPro accessories, your tolerance for low-light noise, and what is actually sold in your country. The current shortlist includes the Insta360 X6, DJI Osmo 360 II, GoPro Max2 and Insta360 X4 Air.
For a first purchase, the Insta360 X6 is the strongest all-round candidate if its higher price fits your budget, according to TechRadar’s comparison. DJI’s Osmo 360 II has the most ambitious listed specification—8K at 60fps, 120MP stills and 105GB of built-in storage—but its United States availability was still absent from TechRadar’s September 2026 review. WIRED named GoPro Max2 its best 360 camera for most people in its March 2026 guide, a dated editorial judgment rather than a universal ranking. X4 Air is worth investigating when low weight or a lower entry price matters, but the available evidence does not establish a complete head-to-head specification or price profile.

What a 360 camera actually records
A 360 camera uses two opposing ultra-wide lenses to capture a complete sphere around the camera. Software stitches those hemispheres into an equirectangular file, allowing you to choose the viewing direction later. This is different from a conventional action camera, which commits you to a forward-facing composition while recording.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical advantage is reframing: you can record a bike ride, walk through a city or group event without aiming perfectly, then select a conventional-looking viewpoint in the mobile or desktop editor. WIRED describes this as recording everything first and turning the spherical recording into ordinary video later (WIRED’s 2026 guide).
#1 Best Overall
- Think bold. A collection of stickers that capture the Insta360 spirit, freely pasted wherever you like. In the Box: 1x Insta360 X3, 1x Charge Cable, 1x Protective Pouch, 1x Lens Cloth, and 1x User Guide.
- NEW ERA 360 ACTION CAMERA: Insta360 X3 combines 5.7k 360 with all the power of a 4K action camera together. Unbelievable potential!
- 5.7K 360 CAPTURE & REFRAMING: Insta360 X3 captures 360 Active HDR video, with all the benefits of a traditional action camera. Choose your favorite angle after the fact with easy reframing in the AI-powered Insta360 app.
- 4K WIDE-ANGLE SHOTS: Shoot wide-angle footage in maximum resolution with 4K30fps or a super-wide 170° field of view with 2.7K60fps MaxView.
- KEEP FOOTAGE STABLE & LEVEL: FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock algorithms work together to deliver incredibly smooth videos.
There is an important resolution caveat. An “8K” specification describes the entire 360-degree panorama, not an 8K image of the small window you crop for a 16:9 or vertical clip. Reframing throws away most of the sphere, so the final view has substantially less detail than the capture number suggests. A higher-resolution camera gives the crop more pixels and makes digital panning cleaner, but it does not turn a reframed segment into a native 8K conventional-camera shot.
Shortlist at a glance
| Camera | What the published evidence establishes | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X6 | Up to 8K/50fps 360 video; 120MP stills in TechRadar’s comparison and Insta360’s current comparison listing | First-time buyers wanting a high-resolution, flexible reframing workflow | TechRadar’s “stronger first-purchase” assessment is editorial; confirm local price and stock |

| GoPro Max2 | WIRED’s March 2026 guide picked it as best for most people; dual lenses and 10-bit video. Tom’s Guide result lists standard GoPro mounting fingers, proprietary quick release, 3/8-inch thread and magnetic attachment | Action users invested in GoPro mounts and a conventional GoPro-style workflow | Recheck the current full review, package contents and regional price before buying |
| Insta360 X4 Air | Included in WIRED’s March 2026 updated guide as a lighter/lower-cost candidate | Travelers prioritizing carrying weight or entry price | The available evidence does not provide a thorough comparative specification or price; verify the official listing |
These are decision aids, not a global league table. Prices, bundles, taxes, stock and even launch timing vary by country. Use the model sections below to match a camera to your output and working habits.
Insta360 X6: the balanced first purchase
Insta360’s current product comparison lists the X6 among its X-series cameras with 8K 360 video at up to 50 frames per second. TechRadar’s current X6 comparison lists 120MP still images and assesses the X6 as the stronger first-purchase option when the buyer can afford its higher price (TechRadar’s X6 comparison; Insta360 product comparison).
That recommendation makes sense for people who want one camera for travel clips, walking tours, family events and occasional action. The 8K/50fps ceiling supplies more room for reframing than a lower-resolution model, while 120MP still capture is useful when you want to extract a conventional composition from a spherical photo. It remains a capture specification: the crop you export will contain fewer pixels than the full panorama.
Choose the X6 when
- You are buying your first serious 360 camera and want a high-resolution generalist.
- Your editing plan includes frequent reframing to both horizontal and vertical social formats.
- You prefer Insta360’s established camera-and-editor ecosystem and can absorb the higher purchase price.
Check before ordering
- Look up the current local price, tax treatment and stock; the cited comparison does not establish a universal 2026 price.
- Confirm which batteries, charging accessories and selfie sticks are included in the bundle you select.
- Check that your phone, tablet or computer can decode and edit high-resolution 360 files smoothly.
DJI Osmo 360 II: highest listed specification, with regional caveats
TechRadar’s review by Sam Kieldsen, published September 3, 2026, reports a September 15, 2026 launch and lists these specifications: 1.1-inch dual sensors, an f/1.9 maximum aperture, 8K/60fps maximum video, 120MP maximum photos, 105GB of internal storage plus microSD expansion, a 2-inch OLED screen and a 183g body. The review lists the Standard Combo at £509 in the UK and AU$921 in Australia at publication (TechRadar’s DJI Osmo 360 II review).
The review also says the lenses are user-replaceable and that the camera remains waterproof to 10 metres. Replaceable lenses can reduce the repair burden after a scratch or impact, but they do not make the camera indestructible. Waterproof depth is not the same as guaranteed underwater stitching quality: water, bubbles, low contrast and refraction can still make the seam between lenses visible. Follow DJI’s exact sealing, fresh-water rinsing, port-cover and drying instructions before using the camera underwater.
TechRadar describes the Osmo 360 II as competitive after dark, while judging the overall improvement over the previous generation as modest. Treat that as the reviewer’s assessment, not a laboratory ranking: night results change with subject movement, artificial light, stabilization settings and your tolerance for noise. The review headline calls it “much more affordable than Insta360”; that is TechRadar’s wording and a comparison at its publication date, not a permanent price claim.

Who should buy it
- Existing DJI owners who can reuse compatible mounts, microphones or other parts of their workflow.
- Travel and action shooters who value 8K/60fps, a larger listed sensor format and internal storage before inserting a card.
- People who are worried about lens damage and prefer a model with user-replaceable lenses.
Regional availability matters
TechRadar reported that the Osmo 360 II was not available in the United States at the time of its September 2026 review. Do not convert the £509 UK or AU$921 Australian launch prices into a US estimate, and do not assume that a later launch, import listing or bundle has the same warranty. Check DJI’s local store and authorized retailers on the day you buy, then verify voltage, language, return rights and service coverage.
GoPro Max2: the mounting-system choice
WIRED’s guide updated in March 2026 names GoPro Max2 the best 360 camera for most people in that guide. That is a dated test judgment by WIRED, not proof that it wins every use case. WIRED highlights the dual-lens design and 10-bit video. A surfaced Tom’s Guide result identifies standard GoPro mounting fingers, a proprietary quick-release system, a 3/8-inch thread and magnetic attachment.
Mount compatibility can outweigh small differences in resolution for cyclists, skiers, motorcyclists and creators who already own a collection of action-camera arms, chest mounts or helmet hardware. A familiar mounting pattern also reduces the temptation to improvise an adapter that could loosen during an impact. Confirm the exact Max2 package, because a mounting system being supported does not mean every accessory is included.
Choose Max2 when
- Your existing action-camera kit is built around GoPro-style fingers or the listed quick-release and magnetic options.
- You want 10-bit video for more flexible color work and expect to mix 360 footage with other action-camera clips.
- You value the GoPro ecosystem and support path more than chasing the highest headline still-photo number.
Questions to verify
- Read the current full review and local product page for battery, waterproofing, resolution modes and package contents; the roundup evidence does not establish every Max2 specification.
- Check whether your preferred mount is rated for the camera’s weight and for the speed or impact of your activity.
- Confirm that your editing application preserves 10-bit footage through export rather than converting it to 8-bit early in the workflow.
Insta360 X4 Air: a lighter shortlist option
WIRED added X4 Air to its March 2026 guide and replaced its earlier X4 entry. The available material supports treating it as a lighter or lower-cost candidate, but it does not establish a complete comparative specification, price, battery figure or durability profile. That makes X4 Air a model to investigate rather than a camera to label “best” without checking current details.
Look up the official X4 Air specifications, weight, maximum video modes, still-photo resolution, waterproof rating, included accessories and local warranty. Compare the total kit—not just the body price—because a lighter camera may require a different battery, stick, case or mount than the accessories you already own.
How to choose by the video you will deliver
For reframed travel stories
Prioritize sphere resolution, stabilization, battery endurance, a dependable mobile editor and a compact selfie stick. Travel footage is often reframed into several aspect ratios, so a high-resolution capture such as the X6’s 8K/50fps listing or Osmo 360 II’s 8K/60fps listing gives the crop more usable detail. Carry spare batteries and storage; a full day of recording can fill cards quickly, especially when you keep the original 360 masters.
For action sports
Start with mounting security, lens protection, waterproofing, replaceability and the cost of replacing a scratched lens. Max2 is compelling when your existing mounts fit. Osmo 360 II is notable for its reported 10m waterproof rating and user-replaceable lenses, but follow the manufacturer’s underwater limitations. Whichever model you choose, mount it where both lenses have a clear view and keep fingers, straps and protective cages out of the stitching zone.

For night scenes and indoor events
Compare sensor size, aperture and reviewer observations rather than relying on the 8K label. TechRadar calls the Osmo 360 II competitive after dark but says its generational improvement is modest. Use a slower walking pace, avoid rapid pans and give the camera stable support; motion blur and seam errors can matter more than a small difference in pixel count.
For still panoramas
The X6 and Osmo 360 II are both listed at 120MP maximum stills by their cited sources. That number describes the complete spherical photo. If your final image is a narrow crop, framing, subject distance and lighting will determine whether the exported view looks sharp. Confirm whether the camera’s highest still mode has restrictions such as slower capture, a particular aspect ratio or limited burst operation.
Capture resolution versus exported resolution
Before buying, decide whether you will deliver a full interactive panorama or a flat video. A full 360 file retains the entire sphere for viewers to look around. A reframed export selects only a window—often 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1—so its effective detail is a fraction of the original capture. Stabilization, horizon leveling and digital zoom can reduce it further.
For reframing, record at the highest mode that your card, battery and computer can handle, then export a short test clip. Check fine textures such as hair, leaves, road markings and distant signs. If your computer struggles, create proxy files rather than assuming a lower capture mode will produce a better final image.

Editing device and applications
360 files are larger and more computationally demanding than ordinary action-camera clips. Confirm that your phone has enough free storage and that your desktop editor supports the camera’s 360 metadata, reframing controls, stabilization and color profile. An editor that treats the file as a flat equirectangular image can produce a distorted export even when the original recording is fine.

Use a high-capacity, compatible microSD card where the camera requires one, and reserve space for the original spherical files. The Osmo 360 II is reported to include 105GB of internal storage plus microSD, which can be useful when a card is full or forgotten. Internal storage is not a substitute for backups: copy footage to a computer or drive before formatting the camera.
Power and mounting
Budget for at least one spare battery, a reliable charger and a selfie stick or mount suited to your activity. Verify compatibility by model; a connector or battery that fits physically may not be electrically or mechanically supported. A disappearing selfie stick is valuable for third-person travel shots, while an action mount must keep the camera clear of both lens fields.

Buying checklist before you pay
- Define the output. Decide whether you need interactive 360 panoramas, reframed horizontal video, vertical clips, still photos or all four.
- Set a complete-kit budget. Include batteries, card, stick, lens guards, case, shipping, tax and replacement-lens risk—not only the camera body.
- Check regional stock. Confirm that the exact model and bundle are sold in your country, with local warranty and return terms. This is essential for the Osmo 360 II because its US availability was absent in the cited September 2026 review.
- Match your ecosystem. Reuse DJI or GoPro equipment only after checking mounts, microphones, batteries and quick-release parts for the specific model.
- Check your editing hardware. Make sure your phone or computer can store, decode and export high-resolution 360 footage.
- Read care limits. Waterproof depth, lens replacement and impact resistance have separate conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for covers, rinsing, drying and underwater use.
- Plan a backup. Keep the original 360 masters and a second copy before deleting files from the camera.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by “8K” alone: remember that the number covers the entire sphere; evaluate a reframed test clip at your intended output size.
- Assuming every country gets the same bundle: prices and included accessories differ by region. Record the currency, country and date when comparing offers.
- Using underwater footage without checking seam behavior: waterproofing protects the camera to its rated depth; it does not guarantee invisible underwater stitching.
- Leaving lenses exposed: 360 lenses protrude and are difficult to protect without affecting the image. Use the model-specific guards or case recommended by the manufacturer.
- Running out of power or storage: high-resolution spherical files consume both quickly. Carry spares and offload footage during multi-day trips.
- Expecting a conventional-camera crop to look like native 8K: export resolution is determined by the selected window, not the full panorama’s label.
- Ignoring repair economics: a user-replaceable lens, as reported for Osmo 360 II, can change the cost and downtime after a scratch, but replacement parts and installation conditions still need verification.
Which 360 camera should you buy?
Choose the Insta360 X6 if you want the most balanced first purchase among the currently documented options and can pay for its higher price. Choose the DJI Osmo 360 II if its 8K/60fps, 120MP, internal storage, DJI integration or replaceable lenses solve a specific need—and only after confirming that it is officially available where you live. Choose the GoPro Max2 if GoPro mounting compatibility and 10-bit footage fit your action workflow; WIRED’s “best for most people” label belongs to its March 2026 guide, not to every buyer. Consider the Insta360 X4 Air when low weight or a lower price is the priority, but verify its current specifications and bundle before committing.
Whichever model wins your shortlist, buy the camera that makes your complete workflow reliable: safe mounting, enough power and storage, an editor you can use, and local support when a lens or battery eventually needs attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an 8K 360 camera really recording 8K video after reframing?
No. 8K refers to the entire equirectangular sphere. A reframed 16:9 or vertical export uses only a portion of that sphere, so its effective detail is lower than a native 8K forward-facing recording.
Was the DJI Osmo 360 II available in the United States?
TechRadar’s review, published September 3, 2026, reported that it was not available in the United States at publication. Check current local availability because launch status and retailer inventory can change.
Does a 10m waterproof rating guarantee good underwater 360 footage?
No. It describes the camera’s stated water-resistance limit under the manufacturer’s conditions. Refraction, bubbles, low contrast and water on the lenses can still create visible stitching problems.
What should I buy for action sports if I already own GoPro mounts?
GoPro Max2 is the most natural shortlist choice because the surfaced Tom’s Guide result lists standard GoPro mounting fingers, a proprietary quick-release system, a 3/8-inch thread and magnetic attachment. Verify the exact mount and package before purchase.
