There is no single best 360 camera for every buyer in 2026. GoPro MAX2 is the established action-focused choice, Insta360 X5 remains the documented low-light pick, and Insta360 X4 Air is the beginner-oriented model selected by WIRED earlier in the year. However, two late-2026 launches change the buying decision: Insta360 X6 and DJI Osmo 360 II. X6 is the premium, feature-rich option with a dated US review price of $700, while Osmo 360 II has the most ambitious manufacturer-claimed specifications. Because the available sources do not provide an independent head-to-head test of those two new cameras against MAX2 or X5, choose by workflow, lighting, durability, sound, editing habits and verified local availability rather than by a universal ranking.
The short answer
A 360 camera records in every direction at once. You decide the final viewing angle later, usually by reframing the spherical recording into a conventional flat video for a phone, television or social platform. That ability is more important than a headline resolution number: a camera that captures excellent footage but makes reframing awkward may be a poor fit for a casual traveler, while a rugged camera with fast mobile editing may suit an action shooter better.

| Best fit | Model to investigate first | Why it stands out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium late-2026 features | Insta360 X6 | T3 reports larger sensors, faster processing, tougher lenses, weatherproofing, improved on-camera editing, longer battery life, Dolby Vision and I-Log. | T3’s observations and prices are dated; the sources do not establish independent comparative testing. |
| Highest stated capture ambition | DJI Osmo 360 II | DJI announces 8K/60fps HDR 360 video, replaceable lenses, 105 GB built-in storage and 14.5 stops of dynamic range. | Those are DJI launch claims, not independently verified results; the supplied information does not establish a current price or local stock. |
| Action mounts and established specifications | GoPro MAX2 | GoPro lists 4K/100 spherical video, 5.6K/60 capture, six microphones and compatibility with more than 35 mounts and accessories. | WIRED found weak low-light performance and a mobile-first reframing workflow in its testing. |
| Low-light priority | Insta360 X5 | WIRED selected it for low-light use; Insta360 lists 1/1.28-inch sensors, 8K/30 video, PureVideo processing, replaceable lenses and three-hour battery life. | Its $549.99 figure was an April 2025 launch price, not a current quote. |
| Beginner or audio-accessory needs | Earlier WIRED picks | WIRED’s March 2026 guide chose Insta360 X4 Air for beginners and DJI Osmo 360 for audio accessories. | Those recommendations predate X6 and Osmo 360 II and should not be treated as a 2026 final ranking. |
Why a 360 camera is different from a normal action camera
A conventional action camera points in one direction when you press record. A 360 model captures the scene around the camera, then lets you choose the viewpoint during editing. You can follow a cyclist after the ride, turn a travel clip toward a landmark, or export several angles from one take without having aimed perfectly in advance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe trade-off is a two-stage workflow. First, record the complete spherical scene. Second, open the footage in the camera maker’s app or desktop software, set keyframes or a virtual camera path, choose the output aspect ratio and render a flat clip. A 360 camera therefore saves missed moments but adds storage, processing and editing decisions. Buyers who want an immediately shareable, already-composed clip may prefer a single-lens mode or a conventional camera.

What changed during 2026
WIRED’s March 28, 2026 guide was written before the two most consequential launches late in the year. T3 reports that Insta360 announced X6 on August 12, 2026. DJI announced that Osmo 360 II launched globally on September 3, 2026. The earlier guide remains useful for its tested observations, but it cannot determine which late-2026 camera is best.
No source available for this comparison supplies a standardized, independent test of X6, Osmo 360 II, GoPro MAX2 and Insta360 X5 under the same lighting, movement, stabilization and export conditions. Treat manufacturer specifications as specifications, T3’s X6 comments as a reviewer’s observations, and WIRED’s MAX2 and X5 findings as that publication’s testing. Do not read the launch date alone as proof of superior image quality.
Camera-by-camera analysis
Insta360 X6: premium features for buyers who will use them
T3 describes X6 as a substantial update rather than a minor cosmetic revision. Its review points to larger sensors, a faster processor, tougher lenses, weatherproofing, improved editing on the camera itself and longer battery life. The review also identifies Dolby Vision and I-Log, features aimed at buyers who want more latitude in color and post-production. These are review observations, not standardized laboratory measurements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →T3 reported a US Standard Bundle price of $700 at review time, with corresponding listed prices of £619 in the UK, €699 in Germany and the wider European market, and AU$1,050 in Australia. An Essentials Bundle was listed at $800 in the United States. Prices, bundles and stock can change, so use the listing for your country immediately before purchase.
X6 makes the most sense when you regularly reframe footage, shoot in changing weather, value longer endurance and will actually use advanced color or video features. T3 also says it costs more than its predecessors and may exceed the needs of casual buyers. The available evidence does not establish how its image quality compares directly with Osmo 360 II, MAX2 or X5.
DJI Osmo 360 II: impressive claims, limited independent evidence
In DJI’s September 3, 2026 launch announcement, the company describes an advanced square HDR sensor, 8K/60fps 360 video, AI SuperNight 2.0, replaceable lenses, 105 GB of built-in storage and 14.5 stops of dynamic range. DJI says the camera launched globally on that date.
Those specifications could matter to buyers who want high frame rates, HDR scenes, internal storage or a repairable front element. They do not, by themselves, establish cleaner night footage, better stabilization, longer real-world battery life or easier reframing than competing cameras. The supplied information contains no independent comparison, verified country-specific retailer price or confirmed local stock for Osmo 360 II. Check those details in your market before committing.

- SIMPLE, EASY REFRAMING - With Insta360 X4, get out there and shoot, not having to worry about lining up a shot. Shoot first, then reframe easily after, all in the AI-powered Insta360 app.
- INVISIBLE SELFIE STICK EFFECT - The signature third-person Insta360 shot, a specialty of 360 cameras. Immerse your viewers in obstruction-free 360° video, just like you're using a drone or as if you have your own film crew. (Note: The stick is not included in Standalone Version)
- 4K & 170° MAXVIEW - X4 can also be used as a wide-angle 4K action camera at a whopping 4K60fps, or get super wide views with the incredible 170° MaxView at 4K30fps.
- ULTRA STABLE FOOTAGE - FlowState Stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock deliver smooth, level shots, no matter how intense the action is.
Choose Osmo 360 II when its claimed 8K/60 HDR mode and storage design match your workflow and you are comfortable making a decision before broad independent testing is available. If you need a proven low-light result or a known editing experience, the evidence for X5 or MAX2 is clearer, even though those models lack the same late-launch claims.
GoPro MAX2: action hardware and a large accessory ecosystem
GoPro lists 4K/100 spherical video, 5.6K/60 capture, stabilization features and a six-microphone array. The company says MAX2 works with more than 35 mounts and accessories. WIRED’s tested camera has folding mounting fingers, a tripod hole, magnetic attachment and replaceable lens covers, plus a single-lens mode for conventional framing.
That combination favors cyclists, skiers, motorcyclists and travelers who already use action-camera mounts or need several attachment methods. Replaceable covers can reduce the cost of a scratched front element, but they do not make the camera indestructible; inspect the model-specific protection and sealing guidance before exposing it to water, grit or impact.
WIRED reported weak low-light performance in its testing and described the reframing workflow as mobile-first. This is a practical limitation for a creator who prefers a desktop edit or frequently records after sunset. The review’s result should not be generalized to the newer X6 or Osmo 360 II without comparable testing.
Insta360 X5: the clearest documented low-light alternative
Insta360’s product information lists larger 1/1.28-inch sensors, 8K/30fps 360 video, PureVideo low-light processing, replaceable lenses, up to three hours of battery life and waterproofing to 49 feet (15 meters). The specification page lists still photos up to 72 megapixels.
WIRED selected X5 as its low-light pick in the March 2026 guide. That recommendation is the strongest source-backed reason to consider X5 for evening streets, indoor scenes or other situations where a small sensor can struggle. It is not proof that X5 wins every night scene, and it does not establish a direct comparison with X6 or Osmo 360 II.
Insta360 says X5 went on sale April 22, 2025 through its official store, Amazon and selected retailers, with a launch price starting at $549.99. That was a historical launch price. Verify today’s price, bundle and stock rather than budgeting from the old figure.

How the main specifications translate into real decisions
| Decision point | What the supplied evidence establishes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 360 video resolution and frame rate | X6’s review does not state a single headline mode in the supplied material; Osmo 360 II is announced at 8K/60 HDR; MAX2 is listed at 4K/100 spherical and 5.6K/60; X5 is listed at 8K/30. | Compare both resolution and frame rate. High frame rate helps fast action and slow motion; resolution alone does not predict final quality. |
| Single-lens recording | WIRED identifies a single-lens mode on MAX2. The supplied material does not document equivalent details for every other model. | If you often want a ready-to-share forward-facing clip, confirm the exact single-lens modes, resolution and stabilization before buying. |
| Low light | WIRED chose X5 for low-light use and criticized MAX2’s low-light performance. No independent result is supplied for X6 or Osmo 360 II. | Use X5’s documented recommendation as the safer evidence-based choice; treat AI SuperNight 2.0 and X6’s sensor claims as features to verify in independent tests. |
| Audio | MAX2 has six microphones. WIRED’s distinct audio-accessory pick was DJI Osmo 360, an earlier model. | For speech, wind and helmet use, check microphone placement, wind handling and accessory compatibility for the exact camera. |
| Lens repair | MAX2 has replaceable lens covers; X5 and Osmo 360 II are described with replaceable lenses; X6 is described by T3 as having tougher lenses. | Replaceability lowers repair risk, but use a protector when the camera may contact sand, rock or branches. |
| Water and weather | X5 is listed as waterproof to 15 meters. T3 describes X6 as weatherproof. The supplied material does not provide a comparable MAX2 or Osmo 360 II depth rating. | Do not infer a shared depth rating. Follow each model’s sealing, port and accessory requirements. |
| Mounting | MAX2 supports more than 35 mounts and accessories; its body includes folding fingers, a tripod hole and magnetic attachment. DJI’s compatibility information lists Osmo 360 lens protectors and several invisible selfie sticks. | Check the exact model name on every mount, stick and protector. A 360 accessory is not automatically universal. |
| Editing | 360 footage normally requires reframing. WIRED calls MAX2’s workflow mobile-first; T3 notes improved on-camera editing for X6. | Decide whether your main editor is a phone, tablet or desktop, then confirm app support, export formats and your device’s storage. |
Choose by shooting scenario
Action sports and moving subjects
Start with MAX2 if mount variety, folding attachment points, a six-microphone array and high-frame-rate spherical capture are more important than night performance. Its 4K/100 and 5.6K/60 modes are the published figures to examine for fast movement. Add lens protection and a mount designed for your activity, then test the attachment before riding or climbing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider X6 if you value the newer processor, longer battery life and weatherproofing described by T3, but remember that the review evidence is not a controlled action comparison. Osmo 360 II’s announced 8K/60 HDR mode is potentially attractive for motion, yet its real-world stabilization and heat behavior are not established here.
Travel and spontaneous sightseeing
A 360 camera is useful when you cannot predict where the interesting moment will happen. Prioritize battery endurance, storage, a quick phone workflow and a selfie stick that disappears from the stitched image. X6’s reported longer battery life and improved on-camera editing may reduce friction. X5 offers a documented three-hour battery claim and 15-meter waterproofing, useful for long days and water activities when those conditions match the manufacturer’s requirements.
Night streets, interiors and evening events
Use X5 as the evidence-backed starting point because WIRED selected it for low-light use and Insta360 lists PureVideo processing and larger sensors. MAX2 is a less attractive choice for this scenario because WIRED specifically found its low-light performance weak. Do not assume X6 or Osmo 360 II is better at night solely because of larger-sensor, HDR or AI-processing claims; wait for comparable tests or inspect footage recorded in your actual environment.
Desktop editing and professional color work
Confirm the desktop application, codec support, export resolution and color workflow before purchase. T3 reports Dolby Vision and I-Log on X6, which may appeal to a creator who grades footage. That does not guarantee that every desktop editor, phone or social platform preserves those features. Osmo 360 II’s announced HDR mode likewise needs an end-to-end test with your display and publishing platform.
Simple clips with minimal editing
Look for a reliable single-lens mode and a fast mobile export rather than buying the camera with the highest theoretical resolution. MAX2’s documented single-lens mode and mobile-first reframing may suit a phone-centered creator, while buyers who want to avoid reframing altogether should compare ordinary action cameras as well.

Before ordering, confirm that the seller ships to your country, the warranty applies there, the listed bundle contains the battery and mounts you need, and replacement lenses or covers are available. Firmware, app support and accessory compatibility are among the details most likely to change after launch.
Accessories that prevent expensive mistakes
- Lens protection: Choose a protector or replacement lens designed for the exact model. A cover for one camera may obstruct stitching or fail to seal another.
- Invisible selfie stick: The stick must be positioned on the camera’s intended axis and used with a compatible stitching profile. DJI’s compatibility information lists Osmo 360 lens protectors and multiple invisible selfie sticks; verify the specific part number.
- Mounts: MAX2’s more-than-35-item ecosystem is broad, but broad compatibility is not universal compatibility. Check thread size, magnetic interface, load rating and activity rating.
- Extra batteries and storage: High-resolution 360 files are large. Carry spare power and enough phone or computer storage for original spherical files plus rendered exports.
- Water protection: A camera’s depth claim applies only when doors, seals and compatible accessories are correctly installed. Rinse and dry equipment according to the maker’s instructions after salt water or sand.
A practical capture-to-export workflow
- Prepare the camera: Charge the battery, update firmware through the official app, insert supported storage if required and inspect lens covers, doors and seals.
- Choose the mode: Use full 360 capture when you need freedom to reframe. Use single-lens mode when you already know the direction and want a simpler flat-video workflow.
- Mount safely: Tighten the model-compatible stick or mount, keep fingers and straps away from both lenses and perform a short test recording before starting the activity.
- Record with headroom: Keep the camera away from immediate obstructions and leave enough battery and storage for the entire sequence. The lens sees behind you, so check the environment rather than only the forward view.
- Transfer originals: Copy the spherical files to a phone or computer before deleting them from the camera. Preserve the originals if you may want a different framing later.
- Reframe: Set the subject, direction, horizon and keyframes in the maker’s app or desktop software. Try a vertical, square or widescreen project before rendering.
- Review the stitch: Inspect the area around the camera and the selfie stick for seams, warping, blocked microphones or a tilted horizon.
- Export and archive: Render the final flat clip at the platform’s required dimensions, then retain the original 360 file when storage allows.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Choosing by “8K” alone
8K/30 on X5 and 8K/60 HDR as announced for Osmo 360 II are not equivalent capture modes. Frame rate, sensor behavior, stabilization, stitching and export settings all affect the final clip. Compare the mode you will actually use, not just the largest number on the box.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Assuming a late launch has already won
New hardware can be promising without having independent comparisons. X6 and Osmo 360 II arrived after WIRED’s March guide, and no standardized test in the available material settles the winner. Buy the feature set that solves your problem, not an unverified ranking.
Ignoring the editing device
A phone-first workflow can be convenient until long 360 files fill the phone or exports take too long. Confirm app and desktop support, storage needs and your preferred export format before purchase.
Using the wrong lens cover or mount
Physical fit, stitching profile and sealing are model-specific. Match every accessory to the exact camera name and revision, and test it before a one-time trip or event.
Expecting every model to work equally well at night
WIRED’s X5 low-light recommendation and MAX2 criticism are test-specific findings. They should guide those two choices, not be projected onto X6 or Osmo 360 II without evidence.

Final buying guidance
For the most defensible late-2026 shortlist, begin with your main scenario. Choose MAX2 when action mounting, published high-frame-rate modes and a six-microphone design are central. Choose X5 when low-light evidence, replaceable lenses, three-hour battery life and 15-meter waterproofing matter more. Investigate X6 when you will use its premium processing, reported weatherproofing, longer endurance and advanced color features, and accept its dated $700 US Standard Bundle price as a reference rather than a promise. Consider Osmo 360 II when DJI’s announced 8K/60 HDR, replaceable lenses and 105 GB internal storage fit your needs, while recognizing that independent image comparisons, local pricing and stock remain unsettled in the available information.
The best 360 camera of 2026 is therefore the one whose capture mode, repair options, sound, mounting system and editing path match how you actually shoot. Recheck price, firmware, accessories and availability immediately before buying because those details can change faster than the core camera specifications.
