In Tom’s Hardware’s report on the September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, 32 GB was more common than 16 GB among surveyed systems across all platforms: 42.22% versus 37.82%. The same report puts AMD at 48.37% of CPU share, still behind Intel at 51.63%. These are survey snapshots, not figures for all PC gamers.
When did 32 GB overtake 16 GB on Steam?
In the September 2026 all-platform results reported by Tom’s Hardware, the 32 GB RAM category moved ahead of 16 GB. The report says 32 GB rose 4.77% month over month while 16 GB fell 3.38%. Those are changes reported for that month, not evidence of a steady long-term trend.

Why does Valve’s page show different percentages?
Valve’s currently displayed table is labeled Windows Only, so its values should not be mixed with the all-platform figures in the report. For Windows systems, Valve lists 32 GB at 43.28% and 16 GB at 37.60%; AMD is at 47.41% and Intel at 52.59%. The difference is a scope distinction, not a contradiction between values that measure the same group.
| Measure | Valve page, Windows Only | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 32 GB RAM | 43.28% | Valve Steam Hardware & Software Survey |
| 16 GB RAM | 37.60% | Valve Steam Hardware & Software Survey |
| AMD CPU share | 47.41% | Valve Steam Hardware & Software Survey |
| Intel CPU share | 52.59% | Valve Steam Hardware & Software Survey |
What does AMD’s 48.37% share mean?
In Tom’s Hardware’s account of the September all-platform survey, AMD reached 48.37% of CPU share, compared with Intel’s 51.63%. That puts the reported shares relatively close, but Intel remained ahead in that snapshot. Valve’s current Windows-only table shows a different split—47.41% AMD and 52.59% Intel—because it is filtered to Windows.

How representative is the Steam Hardware & Software Survey?
Valve says it conducts a monthly survey to collect data about the computer hardware and software its customers use, and that participation is optional and anonymous. The results describe participating Steam systems; they are not a census of gamers or global PC ownership. Tom’s Hardware cautions that the survey is “far from scientific” and may not reflect broader PC-market movement. The cited figures do not include raw participant counts or confidence intervals, so the size of any sampling uncertainty cannot be quantified here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this mean your PC needs 32 GB of RAM?
No. A share of surveyed systems is a prevalence statistic, not a recommendation for every player or a test of what a particular game requires. Whether an upgrade is useful depends on your workloads and whether your system supports it. Before buying memory, check the PC or motherboard’s supported memory generation and capacity, the module form factor, and available slots; the survey does not identify a compatible kit for your machine.
