Yes, a used iPhone 17 Pro can be a sensible buy if its discount is large enough to account for that specific phone’s battery condition, repair history, carrier status and seller protections. There is no reliable universal “right now” price: compare equivalent storage, condition and carrier status in your market, and walk away from any device with Activation Lock enabled.
1. It is still a recent Pro-tier iPhone
Apple lists the iPhone 17 Pro as a 2025 model with an A19 Pro chip, a 6.3-inch display and storage options of 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. That makes it a recent Pro model worth considering if you want those specifications without paying the price of a new device. Specifications alone do not make a particular used listing good value.

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications are useful for checking the configuration against a listing. Match storage capacity before comparing prices: a 1TB phone and a 256GB phone are not equivalent deals.

2. There are multiple used and refurbished buying routes
Used and refurbished iPhone 17 Pro inventory is available through marketplaces and retailers. For example, Swappa lists used and refurbished iPhone 17 Pro devices, and Best Buy has a refurbished unlocked listing. These are examples of places to compare, not evidence that a particular seller or listing is the cheapest or best.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
“Refurbished” does not describe one universal inspection standard. Before paying, check what the seller actually tests, which parts may have been replaced, whether a battery threshold is stated, what warranty applies and how returns work. Use the terms attached to the specific listing rather than assuming every refurbisher offers the same protections.
3. A few checks can make the risks easier to judge
Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance covers the most consequential checks: Activation Lock, battery condition, parts history, carrier lock, physical condition and returns. Ask the seller to provide current screenshots or inspect the device in person, and do not rely on a listing description when the phone itself can answer the question.
Reject Activation Lock
Apple’s advice is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If setup shows “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return the phone. Do not pay on the promise that the seller will remove the lock later.

Read battery health and parts history together
On the phone, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health for available maximum capacity and cycle count. Then check Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. An “Unknown” or unverified battery can mean its health information is inaccurate. A genuine part marked “Used” is a different status from “Unknown”; assess the displayed part history rather than treating the labels as interchangeable.
Do not apply an invented battery-capacity cutoff. Instead, use the reported condition and cycle count to decide whether the asking price still makes sense, and factor in possible service if the battery condition is unacceptable to you.
Confirm the carrier lock
In Settings > General > About, Apple says “No SIM restrictions” beside Service Provider Lock indicates an unlocked phone. If a provider is named, the device is restricted to that provider. Check compatibility with your carrier and region before purchase; “unlocked” is not a substitute for confirming the phone works on the network you intend to use.

Inspect the device and the seller’s terms
Check the screen, cameras, buttons, charging connection and other functions you depend on, along with cosmetic damage. For an online purchase, read the return period and which problems qualify for a return. Ask what the seller’s certification includes, and check whether warranty coverage remains on that particular device.

Apple’s limited warranty lasts one year from the original purchase date and covers manufacturing issues, but not accidental damage or normal battery wear. A used phone may have little or no coverage left, so check the device’s coverage rather than assuming the warranty starts over when you buy it. Apple’s repair information can help you understand service options; a specific repair price should be verified for your location and device.

There is no single supported target price across countries, storage sizes, carrier states and condition grades. Swappa’s pricing page was updated September 29, 2026, but its listings vary by configuration and carrier, and both prices and availability can change. Treat marketplace listings as current examples, not a representative price survey.

Compare phones that match on the factors that change value, then calculate the real cost rather than focusing on the headline price:
- Total out-of-pocket price: include shipping and any other charges shown at checkout.
- Configuration: compare 256GB with 256GB, 512GB with 512GB, or 1TB with 1TB.
- Condition: account for both cosmetic grade and any functional issues.
- Battery and repair history: weigh capacity, cycle count and parts status together.
- Carrier status: compare unlocked devices with unlocked devices, or verify that a locked phone suits your provider.
- Protection: consider remaining warranty, the seller’s inspection standard and the return window.
Start with the best available new or refurbished offer for the same configuration in your country. Then compare the used phone’s total cost, subtracting any likely battery or service expense and allowing for weaker returns or warranty coverage. If the savings do not compensate for the specific unit’s drawbacks, choose the better-protected option instead.

It is worth shortlisting if you want a recent Pro model, can find a configuration that fits your needs and can verify the phone before purchase. Buy only when the price reflects the actual battery and repair history, carrier compatibility, condition and seller protections. If the seller will not let you verify essential details—or Activation Lock is on—walk away.
