The “3.5 GHz band” is a broad label for radio spectrum around 3.5 gigahertz, not one universally defined block. Its exact boundaries depend on whether you mean a 5G device band, a country’s spectrum allocation, or a named service such as U.S. CBRS.
What does “3.5 GHz band” mean?
GHz means gigahertz, a unit of frequency; 3.5 GHz equals 3,500 MHz. In wireless discussions, “3.5 GHz” commonly describes mid-band spectrum around that frequency. The phrase alone does not specify a single lower and upper boundary or a worldwide set of use rules.

For a precise answer, identify the jurisdiction and context: a technical band supported by equipment, a regulatory allocation, and a named service are related but distinct things.

Two 5G New Radio bands standardized by 3GPP include 3.5 GHz, but their ranges differ. The FCC’s 2021 order gives these boundaries:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Label | Frequency range | Context |
|---|---|---|
| n77 | 3,300–4,200 MHz (3.3–4.2 GHz) | 3GPP 5G NR operating band |
| n78 | 3,300–3,800 MHz (3.3–3.8 GHz) | 3GPP 5G NR operating band |
These ranges overlap, and both include 3.5 GHz. Neither is an exact synonym for every use of “3.5 GHz.” The FCC describes n77 and n78 as 5G bands whose ranges overlap spectrum it discusses in a 2021 order: FCC 21-32.
What is the U.S. CBRS band?
In the United States, the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) refers to 3550–3700 MHz, or 3.55–3.70 GHz, under the FCC’s Part 96 framework. That is a 150 MHz segment, not all of n77 or n78. NIST describes CBRS as a three-tier spectrum-sharing architecture, while NTIA describes the band as shared federal and non-federal spectrum use. The NTIA’s 2024 report notes that the framework was established in 2015.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- NIST’s CBRS overview explains the service’s three-tier sharing architecture.
- NTIA’s 2024 report section discusses the 3550–3650 MHz portion of the band.
How is it different from 3.45 GHz and 3.7 GHz spectrum?
Those labels refer to neighboring spectrum segments that the FCC discusses separately. Their proximity to 3.5 GHz does not make them interchangeable with U.S. CBRS or with the full n77 or n78 ranges. A frequency label, an equipment band, and a regulatory category answer different questions.

A frequency range in a technical standard does not by itself confirm that a particular phone, router, or network can use the spectrum in your market. Compatibility depends on the device model, market, and software, as well as the network’s deployed frequencies and local rules.
