Choose 2XKO if you specifically want free-to-play 2v2 tag-team combat and plan to play with a friend. Choose Street Fighter 6 if you want one fighting game to invest in for the long term, need PS4 or Switch 2 support, or prefer a title without a published development sunset plan. The deciding caveat is that Riot says active 2XKO development will end at the end of December 2026, although its servers will remain online beyond that date.
The short answer
These games appeal to different priorities rather than offering interchangeable versions of the same experience. 2XKO is built around Riot’s 2v2 tag-team concept: one player can control both champions, or two players can share a team. Tags, assists and coordinated decisions are its defining ideas. It is free to play and supports cross-platform play and progression on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Street Fighter 6 is Capcom’s established Street Fighter fighter and is sold as a paid game. Its documented platform reach is wider: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom has also documented Modern Control Type and expanded audio-accessibility options for players who do not want to begin with complex inputs.

What makes 2XKO different?
Every match is designed around a team
Riot calls 2XKO a 2v2 tag-team fighter. A solo player selects two champions and controls both, switching between them and using assist actions. Alternatively, two people can each control one champion on the same team. That creates a fundamentally different decision loop from a fighter in which a single character is your entire on-screen team: you are managing when to enter, when to assist and how the two champions’ actions fit together.
The distinction matters most if your reason for buying a fighting game is social play. A friend can participate as your partner rather than simply taking turns in separate matches. It also means that learning the game involves understanding team interaction, not only memorizing one character’s attacks. Riot’s official overview emphasizes teamwork, tags and assists; it does not provide an independent claim that the system is easier to master than Street Fighter 6.
Free entry changes the trial decision
2XKO is free to play. You can therefore test whether you enjoy tag-team combat without first paying a game price. Free entry does not establish the cost of optional content, nor does it prove that the game will suit every player; those are separate questions that are not answered by the official material.
Supported hardware and progression
Riot’s console announcement says 2XKO is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with cross-play and progression supported across those platforms. It does not support the older PlayStation 4 in the documented platform list. If your household uses different systems, verify that every player is on one of those supported platforms and that the account setup required for cross-progression is complete.
The platform list also affects how you plan a shared session. A PC player and a current-generation console player are within Riot’s stated cross-play group, while a PS4 owner is not covered by that list. Cross-progression means your progress can follow a supported account across listed systems, but it does not remove platform requirements or guarantee that every purchase transfers in the same way. Check the account and store terms when setting up a second platform.
What Street Fighter 6 offers a new player
Modern Control Type
Capcom describes Modern Control Type as a controller-input option that allows special attacks without complex button combinations. That is a concrete onboarding feature: you can begin learning spacing, timing and match decisions without first requiring the traditional input method for every special move. It is not evidence that the entire game is easier, or that an experienced player will prefer Modern controls.
For a group learning together, this distinction can reduce the first barrier to participation. One player can use Modern controls while another uses a different input approach, letting each person choose the method that feels sustainable. The feature addresses execution of special attacks; it does not eliminate the need to learn defense, timing, positioning or the game’s broader rules.

- Compatible with Switch, Windows 10 or above, Android and Raspberry Pi.
- Turbo Function (unavailable on Switch).
- Bluetooth and rechargeable battery.
- Upgradeable firmware.
Audio accessibility settings
Capcom also says Street Fighter 6 includes improved audio accessibility settings that supplement gameplay experiences without visual cues. For players who benefit from stronger audio feedback, this is a documented accessibility advantage. The settings supplement the game; they do not mean that every gameplay event can be understood through audio alone.
A broader platform choice
Street Fighter 6 is documented for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version launched on June 5, 2025, and Capcom says that version supports cross-play. That makes SF6 the practical choice when someone in your group owns a PS4 or Switch 2, because those systems are not in 2XKO’s documented platform list.
Street Fighter 6’s broader footprint is especially relevant if you are buying around the hardware you already own. You do not need to move to a current-generation console solely to meet the documented platform requirement. However, cross-play details beyond the Switch 2 statement should be confirmed for your exact combination of systems rather than assumed from the overall platform list.
What the sales number does—and does not—tell you
Capcom reported more than 5 million Street Fighter 6 units sold worldwide in its June 11, 2025 release. This is a cumulative sales figure as of that date. It is not a current active-player count, a guarantee of short matchmaking queues or proof that it has more players online today than 2XKO.
The number is still useful as context: it shows that the title had passed a substantial commercial milestone by mid-2025. It cannot answer whether your regional queue is busy at the time you play, how many owners remain active, or how the two games compare in present-day participation.
Cost, purchasing and commitment
The clearest cost difference is at the point of entry. Riot identifies 2XKO as free to play, so you can install it and evaluate the tag format without paying a game price first. The official information used here does not establish optional-content prices, a complete monetization breakdown or the total cost of collecting anything in the game, so do not assume that free entry equals zero eventual spending.
Street Fighter 6 is a paid game. Its current price depends on the platform store, edition and any sale running when you buy it, and no platform-specific price is established here. Treat the store listing as the authority for the amount you will actually pay. The same caution applies to downloadable content: this comparison cannot responsibly turn an unknown purchase price into a claimed total-cost winner.

Think of the two purchases as different kinds of commitment. 2XKO minimizes financial risk while increasing uncertainty about the post-2026 development path. SF6 asks for an upfront purchase while offering a broader documented platform choice and no published active-development end date in the information considered here. Your budget and intended time horizon can therefore point in opposite directions.

Active development ends at the end of 2026
In an update dated August 20, 2026, Riot announced that active development on 2XKO will conclude at the end of 2026. Riot said it expects additional 2026 content and a final bug-fix pass before that point. For a new player deciding where to spend years learning a fighter, this is the most important qualification attached to 2XKO.
This is not a scheduled server shutdown
Riot’s stated plan is that “Servers will remain on beyond 2026, and 2XKO will be playable on all platforms.” The announcement therefore describes a development sunset, not a date on which the game becomes inaccessible. Online play can continue after active development ends, but the announcement does not promise a particular amount of future content, balance work or service life.
That distinction matters when comparing risk. A player who wants to sample the game, play casually with friends or compete during the remaining 2026 schedule may consider continued server availability sufficient. A player who expects years of new characters, systems and balance updates should treat the end-of-development announcement as a serious limitation, even though it is not a shutdown notice.
Competitive and matchmaking changes
Riot says ranked lobbies will be disabled in patch 1.3.1. Casual matchmaking will use a single pool per server with skill matching, while private lobbies remain available. Riot also says the 2026 Competitive Series will continue unchanged through its final event in November. These are specific announced changes; they should not be converted into guesses about queue times or the relative size of either game’s competitive community.

Which game fits your priorities?
Choose 2XKO when these statements describe you
- You specifically want a 2v2 tag-team game rather than a conventional Street Fighter-style fighter.
- You want to control two champions yourself or share one team with a friend.
- You are drawn to Riot’s characters and the game’s tag-and-assist design.
- You want a free-to-play starting point before committing money.
- You own a PC, Xbox Series X|S or PS5 and accept that active development is scheduled to end at the end of 2026.
The last point is not a footnote. If you enjoy the current game, you may still play after the development transition, but you should begin with realistic expectations about new features and updates.

- Compatible with Switch and Windows.
- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping and create macros
- Dynamic button layout - button mapping changes with mode functionally and visually
- Ultra-moddable arcade stick - Universal mounting plate supports Sanwa arcade sticks
- Three ways to connect: Bluetooth, 2.4g and wired USB-C. The included 2.4g receiver has a special hidden compartment to store it safely.
Choose Street Fighter 6 when these statements describe you
- You want one main fighting game to learn without entering a title with a published active-development end date.
- You need PS4 or Nintendo Switch 2 support.
- You value a documented beginner option that reduces complex inputs for special attacks.
- You would benefit from audio accessibility settings that add feedback without relying only on visual cues.
- You prefer the established Street Fighter format and are comfortable buying a paid game at the price shown by your chosen platform store.
That recommendation is about documented features and support plans, not a claim that SF6 is objectively superior or that it will automatically be easier to win in.
How to decide with a friend
- Identify the shared platform. If either player is on PS4 or Switch 2, 2XKO is not the documented fit; Street Fighter 6 is available on both of those systems.
- Decide whether you want one team. Choose 2XKO if the main appeal is two people cooperating as a tag team. Choose SF6 if each person would rather learn the game’s standard fighter format.
- Set the time horizon. For a short, no-upfront-cost experiment, 2XKO is the lower-risk entry. For a long-term main game, weigh Riot’s end-of-2026 active-development plan before committing.
- Check the exact online feature you need. 2XKO has cross-play and progression across its listed platforms, but ranked-lobby changes are scheduled in patch 1.3.1. For Street Fighter 6, the evidence confirms cross-play on Switch 2 but does not establish every cross-platform combination.
- Try the control approach you can sustain. In SF6, Modern Control Type is available if complex special-move inputs are a barrier. In 2XKO, use Riot’s current overview as a description of its controls, not as a guarantee that learning will be effortless.
- Agree on what happens after a match. If you want private sessions with a friend, Riot specifically says private lobbies remain available even as ranked-lobby plans change. If you want public ranked competition, verify the current 2XKO patch state before building your routine around it.
What is not established by the available evidence
- There is no comparable official numeric player count for 2XKO and Street Fighter 6.
- No reliable comparison of queue times, network quality, balance, roster value or ease of mastery is established.
- A current Street Fighter 6 price by platform is not supplied, so total purchase and downloadable-content costs cannot be compared responsibly.
- Street Fighter 6’s documented Switch 2 cross-play statement should not be expanded into an unsupported claim about every platform combination.
- Riot’s description of 2XKO controls as “fast” and “intuitive” is a publisher characterization, not independent testing.
Keeping those limits visible prevents a sales total, a publisher description or a support announcement from being mistaken for a measurement it was never intended to provide.

Optional controller advice
Either game can be approached with its supported standard controller. A dedicated arcade fight stick is optional, not a stated requirement. If you prefer one, check the exact model’s compatibility with your PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS4 or Switch 2 before buying; compatibility can differ by platform and connection mode. Do not buy a stick on the assumption that a model supported on one console automatically works on another.
Final recommendation
Start with 2XKO when coordinated 2v2 play is the reason you are interested and free entry matters more than a long development runway. Start with Street Fighter 6 when you want a single long-term fighting game, need the wider platform list, or want documented Modern controls and audio-accessibility options without accepting a known active-development sunset. 2XKO remains playable beyond 2026 under Riot’s current plan, but Street Fighter 6 is the safer default for a new main game in October 2026.

Is 2XKO shutting down in December 2026?
No. Riot says active development will end at the end of 2026, while servers will remain online beyond 2026 and the game will remain playable. Riot also expects more 2026 content and a final bug-fix pass.
What happens to 2XKO ranked play?
Riot says ranked lobbies will be disabled in patch 1.3.1. Casual matchmaking is planned as a single pool per server with skill matching, and private lobbies remain available.
Does Street Fighter 6 have an easier control option?
Capcom’s Modern Control Type allows special attacks without complex button combinations. It lowers an execution barrier, but it does not make every part of the game automatically easy.
Which game should I choose for long-term play?
Street Fighter 6 is the safer default if you want one main fighting game because it has a broader documented platform list and no published active-development end date in the information considered here. Choose 2XKO instead if its 2v2 tag format and free entry are your overriding priorities.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick 2XKO for free, coordinated 2v2 tag play with Riot characters, knowing active development is planned to end in December 2026 while servers remain online. Pick Street Fighter 6 for the broader platform reach, Modern controls, audio-accessibility options and a safer long-term investment.
