2TB Portable SSDs for PC: What to Buy and Check in 2026

For a PC with a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port, Samsung’s Portable SSD T9 is the speed-focused choice among the models with well-documented specifications here. For a rugged 10 Gbps drive, consider the Samsung T7 Shield; for higher advertised speeds and a stated sustained-write figure, consider the SANDISK Extreme PRO Portable SSD V3. Your PC’s port and cable can matter as much as the drive: a drive cannot deliver its advertised peak if the computer lacks the required interface.

This is a specification-based buying guide, not a report of eight drives tested by this publication. TechRadar’s reported T9 test results are identified as that publisher’s testing. The evidence available supports comparing these three models; it does not substantiate a ranked list of eight tested products.

Which 2TB portable SSD fits your PC?

Model Interface and advertised speed Documented protection Warranty listed in the cited source Best fit
Samsung Portable SSD T9 2TB USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps); up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read and write Samsung lists drop resistance up to 9.8 feet; no IP rating is stated in the cited comparison Five years in Samsung’s US comparison; verify local terms A PC with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 when fast transfers are the priority
Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 2TB USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps); up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write IP65; drop resistance up to three meters Three years in Samsung’s US comparison; verify local terms Rugged use where a 10 Gbps connection is sufficient
SANDISK Extreme PRO Portable SSD V3 2TB Up to 4,000 MB/s read and 3,800 MB/s write; SanDisk’s page warns actual results vary by host, interface and conditions IP65; three-meter drop protection Five-year limited warranty listed by SanDisk; check regional terms High advertised speed and a published sustained-write specification

These are manufacturer specifications, not directly comparable independent measurements. In particular, a higher peak figure does not guarantee that a PC will reach it or sustain it during a long transfer.

What each recommended drive offers

Samsung Portable SSD T9: choose it for a compatible 20 Gbps port

Samsung specifies the 2TB T9 for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, with sequential read and write speeds up to 2,000 MB/s. Samsung also lists drop resistance up to 9.8 feet and AES 256-bit encryption for the T9 family. Those features do not make it a 2,000 MB/s drive on every PC: a 10 Gbps or slower connection constrains throughput, and the cable and workload also affect results. See Samsung’s US SSD comparison for the listed interface, speed and warranty details.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

TechRadar’s 2026 portable-SSD guide reports T9 read results of 1,700–2,000 MB/s and write results of 1,300–1,900 MB/s, varying by workload. These are TechRadar’s results, not tests conducted for this article. They illustrate why a manufacturer’s maximum and a workload-dependent test range are different kinds of evidence. Read TechRadar’s test guide.

Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield: a documented rugged option at 10 Gbps

The T7 Shield is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive, not a 20 Gbps counterpart to the T9. Samsung specifies up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, and says reaching those maximums requires a compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2 host and cable. Its listed IP65 rating and drop resistance up to three meters make it the clearer choice when ruggedness matters more than top-end interface speed. Samsung lists AES 256-bit encryption for the T7 Shield family. Samsung’s announcement and specifications describe these claims.

Sandisk 2TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From SanDisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

SANDISK Extreme PRO Portable SSD V3: high peaks plus a sustained-write claim

SanDisk lists up to 4,000 MB/s read and 3,800 MB/s write for the 2TB V3. For its 2TB–4TB models, it also states an average sustained write speed of 3,100 MB/s based on internal testing. That figure is not a promise for every PC or every workload: SanDisk notes actual performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, use conditions and other factors. The V3 page specifies IP65 protection, three-meter drop protection, hardware AES 256-bit encryption with password protection, and a five-year limited warranty. Check the exact V3 generation and 2TB capacity; older Extreme PRO products have different specifications. SanDisk’s V3 product page provides its specifications and qualifications.

Check your PC’s USB connection before buying

USB connector shape alone does not tell you the connection speed. A USB-C port may support different USB generations, while an appropriate cable is also needed to use the drive’s advertised interface. The key distinction among these picks is that the T9 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps), while the T7 Shield uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). SanDisk’s V3 advertises higher transfer rates, but its product page makes clear that actual speed depends on the host and interface.

  • Check your PC maker’s specifications or documentation for the USB generation and lane mode supported by the specific port you plan to use.
  • Confirm that the included or replacement cable supports the drive and host interface. A cable that fits physically may still limit speed.
  • Match expectations to the slowest part of the connection: the drive, cable, PC port or workload.
  • For recurring large transfers, look for sustained-write information as well as peak sequential figures. Compare benchmarks only when their host system, workload and test conditions are clear.

How to choose between speed, ruggedness and security

Prioritize PC compatibility over the biggest number

Choose the T9 for its 20 Gbps interface only if your PC supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. If it does not, the advertised peak cannot be taken as an expected result. The T7 Shield’s 10 Gbps interface may be a more sensible match for a PC without Gen 2×2. SanDisk’s V3 lists the highest manufacturer speed figures of these models, but its stated maximums also depend on a suitable host and conditions.

Read protection claims precisely

IP65 is a specific ingress-protection rating, not a guarantee against every kind of damage. Samsung lists IP65 and three-meter drop resistance for the T7 Shield; SanDisk lists IP65 and three-meter drop protection for the V3. Samsung lists drop resistance up to 9.8 feet for the T9, but the cited comparison does not give it an IP rating. Treat these as model-specific manufacturer claims, not interchangeable proof of indestructibility.

Do not assume encryption is already configured

Samsung lists AES 256-bit encryption for the T7 Shield and T9 families. SanDisk lists hardware AES 256-bit encryption with password protection for the V3. Encryption and password protection can require setup or software, so check the product’s current instructions and configure the feature before storing sensitive files. A stated encryption capability does not mean a drive arrives protected by a password you have set.

Compare warranty terms in your region

Samsung’s US comparison lists a five-year warranty for the T9 and three years for the T7 Shield; SanDisk lists a five-year limited warranty for the V3. Warranty coverage, exclusions and availability can vary by region. Samsung publishes separate SSD product warranty information; check the terms applicable where you purchase before relying on a period shown in a comparison.

What about the Crucial X10 Pro?

A Crucial product flyer describes Windows PC compatibility, up to 2,100 MB/s read speed, IP55 protection and drop resistance for the X10 Pro. The available information does not firmly establish the exact 2TB SKU’s write speed or warranty, so those details should not be assumed when comparing it with the three better-documented models above. Verify the specific capacity and current specifications directly before buying. Crucial’s X10 Pro flyer.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm that the listing is for a 2TB drive and the exact generation named here, especially the SANDISK Extreme PRO V3.
  • Check the USB standard of the PC port you will use, not just whether it has USB-C.
  • Use a compatible cable and treat manufacturer peak speeds as conditional maxima.
  • For sustained transfers, distinguish a stated average sustained speed from a short-burst maximum; note whose testing supports each number.
  • Check the local warranty terms and, if you need encryption, confirm how password protection is enabled.
