29 Slow-Cooker Winter Soup Ideas for Homework-Time Dinners

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chicken noodle, lentil, white bean, and other soups can make useful slow-cooker dinners while you help with homework—but “set and forget” does not mean zero prep or no interruptions. Some soups need ingredients added near the end, and the individual recipe determines its timing. Below are 29 practical soup ideas, not 29 verified recipes: the available recipe collections support this range of styles, but do not establish a specific recipe, active prep time, or low/high cook-time range for every item. Food Network and The Kitchn both use “set and forget” language for slow-cooker soup ideas; their collections are inspiration, not a substitute for the directions of the recipe you choose.

How to use these 29 soup ideas

Choose an idea that suits your household, then use a published recipe for its ingredient quantities, preparation, cook time, and any late additions. The entries below are soup styles rather than individually verified recipes; no active prep times or low/high cooking ranges are established for them here. Treat each as a starting point for finding a recipe, not as a complete recipe or a promise that it can cook unattended from start to finish.

Collection examples from Food Network, The Kitchn, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics support the variety of slow-cooker and winter soup styles listed here. Their collections do not verify the timing or finishing steps of every style. Soups are a suitable slow-cooker category because they are high-moisture foods, according to USDA FSIS.

29 winter soup styles to look for

Chicken and turkey soups

  1. Chicken noodle: A familiar broth-based option. Check the recipe for when to add the noodles; they may need to go in near the end rather than cook throughout.
  2. Chicken and wild rice: A hearty chicken-and-grain combination. Rice type and recipe directions affect timing, so do not assume it can be left for the full cook without checking.
  3. Chicken tortilla: A chicken soup with tortilla-inspired toppings. Look for a recipe that specifies when to add crisp or fresh garnishes.
  4. White chicken chili: A creamy-leaning or broth-based chicken-and-bean variation, depending on the recipe. Check whether dairy or other finishing ingredients are added at the end.
  5. Turkey and white bean chili: A turkey-and-bean variation. Use a recipe that specifies how the turkey is prepared and when it goes into the cooker.
  6. Chicken and corn chowder: A thicker chicken soup. Creamy ingredients may require a late addition; follow the selected recipe rather than adding them at the start by default.

Beef, ham, and sausage soups

  1. Beef and barley: A substantial beef soup with grain. Follow the recipe’s cut, liquid, and timing directions.
  2. Vegetable beef: A broth-based combination of beef and vegetables. Put vegetables in first, since they cook more slowly than meat and poultry in a slow cooker.
  3. Split pea with ham: A thick, legume-based soup with ham. The recipe determines whether the ham is added at the beginning or later.
  4. Sausage and white bean: A filling bean soup. Check whether the recipe calls for browning or otherwise preparing the sausage before slow cooking.
  5. Italian wedding soup: A broth-based soup often combining meatballs and greens. Greens or small pasta may need a late addition; use the recipe’s sequence.

Bean, lentil, and chili options

  1. Lentil and vegetable: A meat-free style built around lentils and vegetables. Use a recipe with a stated liquid quantity and cooking time.
  2. Vegetarian split pea: A meat-free alternative to ham-based split pea soup. Seasoning and liquid vary by recipe.
  3. Tuscan white bean: A bean-centered soup that may include greens or other delicate ingredients. Check the recipe for when those go in.
  4. Black bean: A hearty bean soup that can be served with toppings. Keep any fresh toppings separate until serving.
  5. Three-bean chili: A bean-forward chili. Follow the chosen recipe for its bean preparation and seasoning.
  6. Tomato and lentil: A tomato-based lentil soup. The specific recipe determines liquid balance and timing.
  7. Sweet potato and lentil: A vegetable-and-legume combination. Cut size and the recipe’s directions matter for even cooking.
  8. Chickpea and tomato: A tomato-based chickpea soup. Confirm the recipe’s instructions for the chickpeas you use.
  9. Pumpkin and red lentil: A thick, autumnal variation that also suits winter menus. Follow its own directions for liquid and any finishing additions.

Vegetable-forward and creamy soups

  1. Minestrone: A vegetable-and-bean soup, often with pasta. Check when to add pasta so it does not overcook during a long simmer.
  2. Potato soup: A filling vegetable soup that may be blended or left chunky. Dairy and toppings may be added at the end, depending on the recipe.
  3. Broccoli cheese: A creamy-style soup. Cheese and dairy often need careful timing; follow a recipe that explicitly addresses when to add them.
  4. Butternut squash: A smooth or chunky vegetable soup. Check whether the recipe calls for blending after cooking.
  5. Carrot and ginger: A vegetable soup with a bright seasoning profile. Use the recipe’s quantities and decide whether it requires blending before serving.
  6. Mushroom barley: A hearty grain-and-vegetable soup. Follow a recipe’s liquid and barley instructions rather than assuming the grain can cook all day.
  7. Cabbage and white bean: A vegetable-and-bean combination. Vegetable sizes and the recipe’s directions determine its preparation and timing.
  8. Vegetable and pasta: A flexible meat-free style. Pasta is a common late addition; check the recipe before starting the cooker.
  9. Slow-cooked vegetable soup with beans: A broad, adaptable style for a bean-and-vegetable dinner. Put vegetables in first and use a recipe’s specified liquid and timing.

Set up the cooker before homework starts

  1. Choose a recipe with a schedule that fits. Look at both its total cook time and its active steps. A soup that needs pasta, dairy, greens, shredding, blending, or garnishes later may still be convenient, but plan for that interruption.
  2. Thaw meat or poultry first. USDA FSIS says, “Always thaw meat or poultry before putting it into a slow cooker.” Keep perishable ingredients refrigerated until you are ready to prepare them; the cooker can take hours to reach a bacteria-killing temperature.
  3. Load it correctly. FoodSafety.gov advises filling a slow cooker between half and two-thirds full. Follow the appliance manual for suitable quantities and the recipe for liquid and timing. Put vegetables in first because they cook more slowly than meat and poultry.
  4. Start cooking once preparation is complete. FoodSafety.gov advises against using a timer to delay the start until later in the day. USDA says cooking on low for the full time is safe while the cooker is operating; it also suggests starting on high for the first hour and then switching to low or the recipe setting when possible. Do not override your recipe or appliance manual.
  5. Keep the lid on and confirm the cooker is operating. Opening the lid to check or stir releases heat, so do so only as directed by the recipe. USDA says food remains safe while cooking and once done as long as the cooker is operating.

Handle interruptions and leftovers safely

  • If the power fails while you are away for the entire cooking period: USDA says to discard the food, even if it looks done. If you are home when the outage occurs, finish cooking immediately by another method.
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly: Put them in shallow, covered containers and refrigerate within two hours after cooking ends.
  • Reheat outside the slow cooker: Reheat leftovers on the stove, in a microwave, or in a conventional oven to 165 °F. USDA advises against reheating them in the slow cooker.

Nutrition depends on the recipe and serving

Nutrition figures should be read as recipe-specific, not as a general value for a kind of soup. For example, the American Heart Association’s Slow Cooker Hearty Chicken Noodle Soup lists 329 calories, 32 g protein, and 225 mg sodium per serving. Those numbers describe that recipe’s stated serving, not every chicken noodle soup.
