27-Inch 100Hz vs 60Hz Monitor: What Changes in Everyday Use?

A 27-inch 100Hz monitor can update its image more often than a 60Hz model, which may make scrolling, cursor movement, animations, and compatible games look smoother. It does not make every video or app run at 100 frames per second, and it does not tell you how sharp or color-accurate the screen is. Whether the difference matters depends on what you do, the frames your computer can supply, and the monitor’s supported settings.

What does 100Hz change for everyday use?

Refresh rate is the number of times a display can update its image each second. Microsoft’s example is that a 60Hz display updates the screen 60 times per second. At 100Hz, the display can refresh up to 100 times per second, provided the monitor, connection, computer, and selected mode support it.

That creates shorter intervals between refreshes: about 16.7 milliseconds at 60Hz and 10 milliseconds at 100Hz, calculated as 1,000 divided by the refresh rate. These figures describe refresh timing only; they are not measurements of input lag, pixel response, or the complete time from an action to a visible result.

  • Scrolling and pointer movement: Motion can appear more fluid when the system is producing frames at a rate that takes advantage of the display’s higher refresh rate.
  • Animations and inking: Windows notes that higher refresh rates can make browsing and inking feel more fluid, depending on the content and display capability.
  • Games: A game that can supply more frames may look and feel smoother on a 100Hz display than on a 60Hz one. If the game is running well below 60 frames per second, the monitor cannot create the missing game frames.

The benefit is potential, not guaranteed: people, apps, and hardware differ. There is no established independent statistic here for how many everyday users notice or prefer 100Hz, and refresh rate alone is not a basis for promising reduced eye strain.

Will I notice 100Hz when scrolling?

You may notice smoother motion when scrolling or moving a cursor, particularly if your computer is outputting frames fast enough and Windows is actually set to 100Hz. The distinction is easiest to judge in motion; it does not make static text or still images inherently sharper.

If the display is connected or configured at 60Hz, buying a monitor advertised as 100Hz will not by itself enable the higher rate. Check the available modes in your operating system and confirm that the intended resolution can run at 100Hz.

Does a 100Hz monitor make video run at 100 frames per second?

No. A monitor’s refresh-rate ceiling is not the frame rate of the content. A 30fps video still contains 30 frames per second; a 100Hz display does not manufacture 70 additional frames from that source.

Microsoft documents Windows behavior that can match a display’s refresh rate to some full-screen video frame rates on supported hardware and configurations. Its examples include 24fps and 30fps video and supported display rates such as 24Hz and 48Hz. This is a platform capability, not a universal feature of every monitor, computer, or video player.

Is 100Hz worth it over 60Hz?

It is most worth considering if you regularly scroll, animate, or play games and your computer can make use of the additional refresh headroom. If your workload is mostly static or your apps and hardware rarely supply more than 60 frames per second, the practical benefit may be smaller. Choose by comparing the entire monitor, not the refresh-rate number alone.

What to compare Why it matters
Refresh rate and supported resolution at that rate A monitor may not offer its maximum refresh rate at every resolution. Verify the exact mode you plan to use.
Adaptive-sync support Check whether the monitor and graphics hardware support compatible variable-refresh behavior; a maximum refresh rate does not establish that support.
Resolution and screen size Two 27-inch 100Hz screens can have different levels of image detail. For example, MSI lists one Full HD model and one QHD model.
Response-time specification Quoted GtG or MPRT response-time figures describe a different characteristic from refresh rate and should not be treated as interchangeable with it.
Connection and setup Check the monitor input, cable, graphics hardware, operating-system mode, and selected refresh rate. The complete setup must support the desired mode.
Other practical features Compare panel characteristics, stand adjustment, ports, speakers, price, and warranty for the exact model and region. Refresh rate does not establish these qualities.

Manufacturer listings illustrate why size and refresh rate do not define the whole screen. MSI’s US Store lists the PRO MP273AW as a 27-inch Full HD (1920 × 1080) IPS 100Hz monitor and the PRO MP275Q as a 27-inch QHD (2560 × 1440) 100Hz monitor. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results or recommendations.

How to check whether Windows is using 100Hz

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the display you want to check, if more than one is connected.
  3. Review the refresh-rate choices and choose a supported rate, such as 100Hz if it is listed for the mode you need.
  4. Confirm that the selected resolution remains the one you intend to use. Microsoft notes that an asterisk beside a listed rate indicates that it does not support the current resolution; selecting it can change the resolution.

The choices Windows displays depend on the monitor and the modes it supports. If 100Hz is absent, check the monitor’s specifications for the resolution-and-refresh-rate combination, then verify the connection, cable, graphics hardware, and display settings. Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate is not a reason to buy a 100Hz display: Microsoft says that feature requires supported variable-refresh-rate hardware and a display of at least 120Hz.

What a refresh-rate comparison cannot tell you

Refresh rate describes how often the display can update, not overall image quality. It does not establish resolution, color performance, pixel response, input lag, brightness, viewing angles, stand adjustability, or which ports are included. A 27-inch 100Hz monitor could be a better fit than a 60Hz alternative for motion-heavy use, while still being a worse fit for a particular desk or image-quality need. Compare exact specifications and supported modes for the models sold in your region.
