The August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse is being called the “eclipse of the century” because totality could last as long as 6 minutes 23.2 seconds, with that exceptionally long view available over land near Luxor, Egypt. The phrase is an informal media nickname, not an official astronomical title—and the 2027 eclipse will not have the century’s longest maximum totality.
Why does the 2027 eclipse stand out?
NASA predicts a maximum totality of 6 minutes 23.2 seconds for the August 2, 2027 event. That is the path-wide greatest duration, not a promise that everyone in the path will see six minutes of darkness. The appeal is that the region of longest totality lies on land near Luxor, making an unusually long eclipse view possible from an accessible destination. NASA notes that its map calculation does not account for the Moon’s limb topography. NASA’s 2027 eclipse prediction

During totality, the Moon fully covers the Sun as seen from locations within the narrow track of its shadow. Outside that track, observers see only a partial eclipse. NASA explains the geometry of eclipses.

Is it really the longest eclipse of the century?
No. The “eclipse of the century” label does not mean the 2027 event sets the 21st-century record for maximum totality. Space.com’s comparison says the July 22, 2009 eclipse lasted 16 seconds longer at its maximum, which occurred over the Pacific. The distinction for 2027 is the combination of long totality and a maximum-duration region on land near Luxor—not a record-breaking duration over every other eclipse.

| Comparison | 2027 eclipse | 2009 eclipse |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum totality | 6 minutes 23.2 seconds, NASA’s predicted path-wide greatest duration. | 16 seconds longer at maximum, according to Space.com. |
| Where the maximum occurs | On land near Luxor, Egypt, according to Space.com’s explanation of the nickname. | Over the Pacific, according to Space.com. |
| What the comparison means | Exceptional long-duration viewing is possible from land. | Longer maximum duration, but the maximum point is over the ocean. |
Space.com’s explanation of the nickname and comparison treats the label as an editorial characterization, not an official astronomical ranking. Who first coined the phrase has not been established.
How long will totality last where you are?
The 6 minutes 23.2 seconds is a theoretical maximum along the eclipse path. The duration changes with an observer’s position: locations nearer the center line generally get longer totality, while those near the path’s edges may see only seconds. Being in the right country is not enough to know how long the eclipse will last; the specific viewing location matters.

NASA’s path table gives location-specific circumstances, including a central-line example with 6 minutes 22.3 seconds. That value is not interchangeable with the path-wide greatest-duration prediction. Check the map and local circumstances for your intended viewing point rather than treating either number as a guarantee for an entire region.

- 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.
Where will the total eclipse be visible?
Totality follows a narrow path crossing the southern tip of Spain, northern Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean. NASA lists Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia among the places in the totality region. Areas beyond the narrow track—including nearby places—will see a partial eclipse instead. NASA’s eclipse overview describes total and partial visibility; timeanddate’s 2027 eclipse page maps the route.

Use special-purpose solar filters labeled as compliant with ISO 12312-2 whenever looking directly at the Sun during partial phases. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for direct solar viewing. NASA’s eclipse safety poster gives direct-viewing guidance. During totality, the Sun’s bright face is fully covered for observers inside the path; outside totality, the Sun remains partly visible and requires protection.
