The iPhone has gone from a 3.5-inch touchscreen phone, music player and internet communicator to a forthcoming foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display and laptop-like split-view multitasking. The comparison here is between Apple’s original iPhone, released in the US in 2007, and the announced iPhone Duo, which Apple had scheduled to become available on October 23, 2026—after the October 3 cutoff used for this comparison. Current-generation specifications and battery figures below are Apple’s claims, not independently tested results.
At a glance: original iPhone vs. announced iPhone Duo

How the iPhone’s physical design and display changed
2007: one screen for touch, phone calls and media
Apple introduced the original iPhone on January 9, 2007 as three products combined: a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod and an internet communications device. The device that shipped in the US on June 29 had a 3.5-inch glass multi-touch display. Rather than rely on a physical keyboard, Apple presented touch as the main way to navigate and interact. Steve Jobs described fingers as the device’s “ultimate pointing device” in Apple’s launch announcement—a promotional claim that conveyed the product’s central design idea.
Apple’s January announcement listed a 2-megapixel camera and GSM/EDGE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR connectivity. The shipping details and June 29 US availability were set out in Apple’s June 18 release. Apple’s January 2007 iPhone announcement and June 2007 shipping and battery details document those launch-era facts.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
2026: a phone that unfolds into a larger workspace
Apple’s announced iPhone Duo changes the basic shape: it folds shut around a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display and opens to a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display. The outer screen is the more compact way to use the device while folded; opening it provides more screen area for tasks suited to a wider view. That distinction is a design choice, not evidence that one screen is universally better.
Apple CEO John Ternus called Duo “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original” in Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement. That is Apple’s positioning for an announced product, not an independent assessment of how it performs or holds up. Apple also announced a two-part protective case designed to cover both sides of Duo and a folio with a kickstand. Check that an accessory is specifically compatible with this model; the announcement does not establish that older iPhone cases fit.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Software and multitasking: from touch interface to Split View
The original iPhone combined calling, music playback, email, web browsing, search and maps in one touch-controlled device. Its defining change was not simply a different screen size: it put those functions behind a unified finger-operated interface instead of treating the phone, music player and internet device as separate products.
Apple says iPhone Duo runs iOS 27 and adapts the interface to its two displays. It also enables Split View, allowing two apps to appear side by side on iPhone for the first time. That makes the opened display a more deliberate multitasking surface, rather than just a larger version of the folded screen. Apple described Siri AI as rolling out in beta with iOS 27; the announcement does not establish independent performance results for those software features.

Cameras and media: a much newer hardware brief
The original iPhone’s announced camera resolution was 2 megapixels. Apple lists a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera for Duo. The resolution figures show how far the specifications have moved, but they do not by themselves prove image quality: the supplied product information does not provide independent, comparable camera testing across the two devices.
Media use has changed alongside the screens. Apple described the first iPhone as a widescreen iPod as well as a phone, while Duo’s fold-out inner display creates a larger viewing area. The practical difference depends on whether someone prefers the compact outer screen or opens the device for a bigger view; Apple’s announcement alone does not establish comparative viewing quality.

Cellular and wireless connectivity: SIM cards are a key practical difference
The original iPhone used GSM/EDGE cellular connectivity and also offered Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. Apple says Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. That shift can affect setup for people accustomed to moving a physical SIM between phones: before buying or switching, verify that your carrier supports eSIM activation for the device and that your plan can be transferred as needed. Apple’s announcement does not confirm support from any particular carrier.

Apple’s 2007 estimates for the original iPhone were up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback and 250 hours of standby. Apple cautioned that battery life depended on network configuration and other factors.

For Duo, Apple estimates up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, or up to 24 hours of use per charge when both displays are used equally. These are distinct conditions and categories, not one all-purpose runtime figure. The 2007 and 2026 claims use different measures, so they do not establish a controlled improvement in battery life.
Apple says Duo supports MagSafe and Qi2 charging. For a case or folio, choose one made for Duo’s foldable two-part design; for wireless charging, check that the charger and accessories are compatible with the device. The announcement does not establish that existing cases will fit.
Launch timing, storage and US prices
Apple’s June 18, 2007 release set US availability for June 29, with 4GB and 8GB configurations priced at $499 and $599 respectively. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices.
Apple announced iPhone Duo with a US starting price of $1,999 and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. At the October 3, 2026 cutoff, preorder was scheduled for October 16 and availability for October 23, so Duo was still forthcoming. The launch prices cannot be compared as a simple measure of how much more an iPhone costs: the products differ in model tier, storage, design and launch era, and these figures do not adjust the 2007 price for inflation.
Apple’s September 9, 2026 iPhone Duo announcement is the source for its announced display, software, camera, connectivity, battery, accessory, storage, price and release details. Those are company-reported claims; no hands-on evaluation or independent 2007-versus-2026 performance test is established here.
