Recommended Free Tools
There is no authoritative ranking of the best RPG Maker horror games, and the label covers very different experiences: lethal puzzle rooms, chase-driven survival, eerie exploration, and gothic stories. The recommendations below are organized by the kind of horror and play you want, with engine and edition caveats called out where they matter. Availability can change, so use a creator’s official page or a recognized storefront rather than an unverified download mirror.
How to choose an RPG Maker horror game
Start with the experience you want, not a supposed ranking. Some games make you solve item puzzles while avoiding sudden-death traps; others emphasize being chased, wandering through uncanny spaces, or uncovering a psychological or gothic story. The list includes established touchstones as well as less obvious picks, but it does not claim that every title is obscure or that every game uses RPG Maker itself.

- For traps and puzzles: look for rooms where observation and item use matter as much as the story.
- For pursuit: choose a game built around evasion and escape rather than combat.
- For atmosphere: surreal exploration and unsettling environments may suit you better than jump scares.
- For story: psychological and gothic horror tend to foreground character, symbolism, and discovery.
Engine labels are easy to blur. Some games commonly grouped with RPG Maker horror were made in WOLF RPG Editor or another engine. Likewise, an original freeware release and a commercial remake may differ. Check the specific edition’s official listing before downloading or buying.

The Witch’s House
A strong choice if you want exploration and item puzzles with dangerous consequences. The original freeware game and The Witch’s House MV are distinct editions. Steam describes the latter as an RPG Maker MV remake with remastered visuals, traps, jump scares, and additional difficulty settings. It lists Fummy as developer, DANGEN Entertainment as publisher, and October 30, 2018 as the release date. Check the current Steam listing for availability and platform details: The Witch’s House MV on Steam.
#1 Best Overall
Ib
For players who like puzzle-solving inside an eerie art-gallery setting, Ib is a foundational recommendation. Its appeal is the way exploration and environmental clues build tension, rather than a single combat loop. Confirm which edition you are looking at: original releases and later versions may not share the same availability or features.
Ao Oni
Ao Oni is a useful pick for readers who want pursuit horror. The experience centers on exploring a threatening location, solving problems, and escaping a pursuer. It is a better fit for chase tension than for a slow, purely psychological story; verify the edition and official acquisition route you choose.
Mad Father
This is often mentioned alongside RPG Maker horror, but the broad roundup consulted for this guide identifies it as a WOLF RPG Editor game. Treat it as a close stylistic neighbor, not an RPG Maker title. Its inclusion makes sense if your real goal is atmospheric, puzzle-led indie horror rather than a strict engine requirement.
Rank #2
- COMPLETE RPG STARTER SET: Includes everything needed for up to 5 players and 1 Game Master to begin playing Arkham Horror: The Roleplaying Game.
- IMMERSIVE INVESTIGATION HORROR: Explore a mysterious supernatural town in 1920s Louisiana filled with strange creatures, spirits, and dark secrets.
- PERFECT FOR NEW PLAYERS: Designed as an accessible introduction to the Arkham Horror RPG with a guided adventure and streamlined onboarding experience.
- SOLVE MYSTERIES TO SURVIVE: Use investigation, teamwork, problem-solving, and roleplaying skills to uncover the truth and escape Promise.
- RICH NARRATIVE EXPERIENCE: Combines suspense, storytelling, character development, and cooperative gameplay in the beloved Arkham Horror universe.
Misao
Misao is another scene-adjacent recommendation rather than a confirmed RPG Maker entry: the reviewed roundup attributes it to WOLF RPG Editor. Consider it if you are exploring the wider Japanese indie horror tradition, and check the particular release before assuming its mechanics or content are identical across editions.
Surreal exploration and unsettling worlds
Yume Nikki
Choose Yume Nikki for dreamlike wandering and disquieting imagery rather than a conventional sequence of fights or chase scenes. It is a natural recommendation when you want atmosphere and interpretation to do more work than explicit explanation. Its unusual structure makes it less suitable if you need a tightly directed plot or frequent puzzle prompts.
Space Funeral
Space Funeral is an offbeat, surreal option for players who enjoy strange imagery and a deliberately unconventional tone. It sits toward the eccentric end of horror-adjacent RPG Maker experiences, so approach it for its unsettling world and oddball sensibility rather than polished cinematic scares.
Rank #3
- IMMERSIVE ROLEPLAYING: Dive into the eerie world of Arkham Horror with up to 5 players and 1 game master, ages 14 and up.
- LEARN-AS-YOU-PLAY ADVENTURE: Perfect for both newcomers and veteran role-players, featuring the intuitive Dynamic Pool System (DPS).
- ALL-IN-ONE BOX: Includes campaign, 5 character portfolios, 24 dice, high-quality tokens, 3 double-sided maps, and more for a complete gaming experience.
- FLEXIBLE GAMEPLAY: Breaks down into scenes and acts, allowing for short sessions or extended play, with unlimited team choices and narrative immersion.
- TENSE AND THRILLING: Race against time and the encroaching darkness to stop the ancient force threatening Arkham, with beautiful art and deep strategic gameplay.
OFF
OFF is a dark, surreal role-playing adventure often recommended to people looking beyond straightforward horror. It is not best understood as a pure scare-driven game; its appeal lies in an uncanny world, story discovery, and an atmosphere that can feel disturbing without relying on constant jump scares.

Alicemare is a story-forward, fairy-tale-tinged horror pick for readers who want exploration and puzzles wrapped in an unsettling world. It is commonly grouped with RPG Maker horror, but engine attribution should be checked for the particular version rather than inferred from the label or visual style.
Alice Mare
The spelling can be confusing: the reviewed roundup identifies Alice Mare as a WOLF RPG Editor game, not an RPG Maker title. It remains relevant if you are choosing by mood and style rather than engine, but keep that distinction in mind when searching for a specific release.

Psychological, gothic, and story-led horror
Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum
For a gothic, narrative-focused experience, Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum is one of the clearest currently documented picks. Steam categorizes it as an RPG Maker gothic horror game and lists AstralShift and VisuStella as developers, KOMODO as publisher, and May 19, 2023 as its release date. Its official listing is the place to confirm current availability: Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum on Steam.
The Crooked Man
The Crooked Man is frequently grouped into RPG Maker horror recommendations, but the reviewed roundup identifies it as a WOLF RPG Editor game. It may suit players seeking a story-driven, unsettling adventure; do not count it as an RPG Maker game if engine identity is essential to your list.

More games to round out a discovery list
The following titles are commonly surfaced in RPG Maker horror discovery lists, but the material available here does not establish enough title-specific detail to make precise claims about their mechanics, intensity, engine, or current platform. They are starting points for further discovery, not verified matches for every preference.
- Dreaming Mary — a candidate to explore if you want more surreal, fairy-tale-tinged indie horror.
- End Roll — worth investigating for players browsing story-led, unsettling RPG-style games.
- Blank Dream — another discovery-list candidate; check its official page for edition and content details.
- Re:Kinder — consider it as a further lead for narrative-focused indie horror.
- The Sandman — explore it if you want another entry from the broader RPG Maker horror conversation.
- The Hanged Man — a further story-oriented candidate; verify the specific release and engine.
- The Boogie Man — another title to investigate in the scene, with current availability to be confirmed.
Where to find a legitimate edition
Freeware roots and commercial remakes coexist in this scene, and a title’s availability is not proof that every download source is trustworthy. Start with the developer or publisher’s page, or a recognized storefront listing. For remakes, search by the full edition name so you do not mistake it for the original freeware version. Do not assume that a game is available on a particular operating system or console unless its current official listing says so.
Two listings with concrete edition details are The Witch’s House MV and Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum. For other entries, confirm the title’s own official page before relying on a platform claim or downloading a file.
