2 Better Alternatives to Windows Movie Maker (Free Options for Windows 11)

Windows Movie Maker was discontinued in 2017 and is no longer officially distributed by Microsoft. For a simple, unrestricted desktop replacement, choose OpenShot. Choose Shotcut when you need broader format support, capture tools, or more timeline control. Microsoft Clipchamp is the current Microsoft-integrated option, but it requires a Microsoft account and has a more cloud-connected workflow.

What replaced Windows Movie Maker?

There is no downloadable, supported successor named “Windows Movie Maker.” Microsoft discontinued Movie Maker in 2017. Old download pages and third-party installers that claim to be official replacements should therefore be treated cautiously; the supported choices today are separate editors.

The closest match depends on what you liked about Movie Maker. If you want a small, installed editor for trimming clips, adding transitions, and exporting without a subscription, OpenShot is the strongest fit. If you regularly receive unusual video files, want to capture a screen or webcam, or need a more configurable timeline, Shotcut is the better choice. Clipchamp is convenient for Microsoft-account users who do not mind browser or cloud features.

1. OpenShot: the closest simple, unrestricted replacement

OpenShot describes itself as “A free, open-source video editor that’s easy to use, quick to learn, and surprisingly powerful.” That combination makes it the most natural first choice for former Movie Maker users. You can install it on Windows, macOS, or Linux and keep projects in a conventional desktop workflow.

Why OpenShot fits Movie Maker users

  • Low-friction editing: drag media onto the timeline, trim clips, add transitions, and export without a subscription account.
  • Room to grow: unlimited tracks let you layer narration, music, titles, images, and overlays instead of being confined to a single video lane.
  • Precise timing: snapping, waveforms, and frame-accurate controls help align cuts with speech or music.
  • Animation options: keyframes and effects support motion beyond a basic slideshow.
  • Unrestricted projects: OpenShot states that it has no subscriptions, watermarks, or project limits.

Basic OpenShot workflow

  1. Install the current build from the official OpenShot distribution for your operating system. The product page displays version 4.0.1 (2026); check the page for the build offered to your platform.
  2. Create a project and import your video, photos, and audio. Keep source files in a stable folder rather than moving them while you edit.
  3. Arrange clips on the timeline. Use separate tracks for dialogue, music, titles, and overlays. Snapping helps clips meet cleanly without tiny gaps.
  4. Trim and split. Use the frame-accurate controls to remove unwanted sections. Zoom the timeline when a cut must land on a specific frame.
  5. Add transitions and effects sparingly. A short dissolve or a simple title usually communicates better than applying a different transition to every cut.
  6. Adjust audio. Waveforms make it easier to find speech starts and silences. Lower background music on its own track so narration remains intelligible.
  7. Preview the complete sequence before exporting. Check title spelling, audio levels, and the first and last frames.
  8. Export a delivery copy using a preset that matches where you will watch or share it. Keep the project and original media if you may need revisions.

OpenShot trade-offs

OpenShot is the best default when simplicity and a local workflow matter more than specialist capture or exhaustive format handling. Its feature set is broad, but users working with many camera formats, screen recordings, or unusual codecs may prefer Shotcut’s documented FFmpeg support and native editing. OpenShot’s “free” promise concerns the editor itself; your operating system, storage, and any stock media you obtain elsewhere can still have separate requirements.

2. Shotcut: better for formats, capture, and control

Shotcut’s official description is direct: “Shotcut is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor.” Its clearest advantage over a basic Movie Maker-style editor is breadth. Shotcut supports hundreds of audio and video formats through FFmpeg, can edit media natively without first importing it into a proprietary project library, and supports multi-format timelines.

When Shotcut is the better choice

  • Mixed-format projects: footage from phones, cameras, downloads, and screen recorders can be handled in one application, subject to the individual codec and hardware.
  • Native editing: you can work directly with media files instead of waiting for a separate import or conversion stage.
  • Capture: Shotcut documents screen, webcam, and audio capture, useful when your replacement must also record demonstrations or voice-over.
  • Higher-resolution work: the product page documents support for resolutions up to 4K.
  • Flexible timelines: multi-format timelines let a project combine source media with different properties while you retain more control over the edit.

Basic Shotcut workflow

  1. Install Shotcut as a desktop application for your operating system. Because it is cross-platform, the same general project concepts apply on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  2. Open or create a project and add source clips. Shotcut’s native approach lets you begin editing without a mandatory proprietary import step.
  3. Choose a timeline mode deliberately. Let the first clip establish a sensible format, or configure the project when you know the final resolution and frame rate you need.
  4. Place clips and make cuts. Use the timeline for rough assembly, then refine edits at frame level. Keep dialogue, music, and graphics on separate tracks.
  5. Capture when needed. Use the documented screen, webcam, or audio capture functions for a recording, then edit that material alongside imported footage.
  6. Review filters and audio. Apply corrections only where they improve clarity or consistency; save complex filter combinations for a project preset or repeatable workflow.
  7. Preview at the intended delivery size. A 4K project can be demanding to preview, so check playback and export settings before committing to a long render.
  8. Export a test segment. Verify that the chosen container, codec, resolution, and audio all play correctly on the target device before exporting the entire timeline.

Shotcut trade-offs

The same flexibility that makes Shotcut powerful can make it feel less immediate than Movie Maker. There are more format, filter, and timeline decisions to understand, and the interface is aimed at users who want control rather than a guided wizard. Choose it when those controls solve a real need; otherwise, OpenShot will usually get a simple family video finished faster.

Microsoft Clipchamp: the integrated option

Clipchamp is Microsoft’s current integrated video editor. Microsoft documents a workflow that combines videos, images, and audio, then adds text, transitions, filters, and royalty-free stock content. It is designed for people with no prior editing experience and can run in a supported desktop browser or as a Windows app.

What the free personal plan includes

The free personal plan includes core editing tools, free stock content, and exports up to 1080p without a watermark. Premium features depend on the plan, so check the account’s current entitlements before building a project around paid stock or effects.

Account, browser, and cloud considerations

  • Microsoft account: Clipchamp uses a Microsoft account, unlike the conventional installed-app workflow of OpenShot or Shotcut.
  • Internet connection: Microsoft says an internet connection is needed to sign in, save cloud changes, and use online features.
  • Local does not mean exclusively offline: Microsoft notes that local processing does not guarantee files always stay on the device because project storage, backup, sharing, and some features can use cloud services.
  • Browser choice: use a supported Edge or Chrome desktop browser if you do not install the Windows app.

Basic Clipchamp workflow

  1. Sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to keep associated with the project.
  2. Start a project in the Windows app or supported browser, then add your videos, photos, and audio.
  3. Assemble the timeline by placing clips in order and trimming their ends. Add text, transitions, filters, and stock content only where they support the story.
  4. Confirm storage behavior. Decide whether project media and backups should use connected cloud services, and keep a separate copy of irreplaceable originals.
  5. Export at the required resolution. The free personal plan’s documented ceiling is 1080p; verify that this meets your delivery target before editing a long project.

Which editor should you choose?

Choose OpenShot if you want the simplest local replacement

Pick OpenShot when your priority is a straightforward installed application, unlimited tracks, and no subscription, watermark, or project-limit restrictions. It is the closest conceptual replacement for making home videos without learning a production-heavy interface.

Choose Shotcut if your media is varied or you need capture

Pick Shotcut when you need hundreds of documented formats, native editing, screen/webcam/audio capture, multi-format timelines, or output up to 4K. Its learning curve is justified when those capabilities prevent conversions or separate recording tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Clipchamp if Microsoft integration matters most

Pick Clipchamp when you value a guided beginner experience, Microsoft account integration, and built-in stock content. Accept the account and internet requirements, and verify whether the free plan’s 1080p export limit matches your project.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you need to work primarily offline? Start with OpenShot or Shotcut rather than a cloud-connected workflow.
  • Do you need a Microsoft-managed project and browser access? Clipchamp is the relevant option.
  • Are your files from several cameras, phones, or recorders? Shotcut’s FFmpeg-based format support is the clearest documented advantage.
  • Do you need screen, webcam, or audio capture inside the editor? Shotcut documents all three.
  • Do you want no subscription, watermark, or project limits? OpenShot explicitly states those conditions.
  • Is 1080p sufficient, or do you need a higher-resolution master? Clipchamp’s free personal plan exports up to 1080p, while Shotcut documents support up to 4K.
  • Will someone else need to revise the project later? Keep the original media, project file, and a final exported copy together regardless of editor.

Moving away from old Movie Maker downloads safely

Do not make an unofficial Movie Maker installer your migration plan. The application was discontinued, and Microsoft no longer distributes it as a supported product. Download an actively maintained editor from its official project or Microsoft distribution instead. Before opening any old installer or project media, scan files with your existing security software and keep a backup of personal videos.
