Does your Ring doorbell support 5 GHz?
Ring’s general guidance is that all Ring devices are compatible with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while only some support 5 GHz. That makes 2.4 GHz the safe starting point, not a guarantee that every model can join a particular network. Check the specification for your exact model before setup. How to choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

If your doorbell cannot see or join 5 GHz
Check the router channel and region
5 GHz visibility can depend on both the doorbell model and the router channel. Ring says that in Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, certain 5 GHz channels (36–64) cannot be used by Ring devices; it recommends channels 100–165 for best 5 GHz performance in those regions. Check the options available on your router and the requirements for your location rather than assuming every 5 GHz network is supported. Ring setup troubleshooting
Distinguish a missing network from a failed connection
If the app does not show the 5 GHz network, try the supported 2.4 GHz network and verify the router channel and model specifications. If the network appears but the app reports an incompatible network or cannot join it, encryption may be the issue: Ring identifies incompatible encryption, such as WPA3, as a possible cause. Check signal quality at the doorbell
Band support does not guarantee a reliable connection at the installation point. Ring measures connection quality using received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Its scale rates 0 to -60 as “Great,” -60 to -70 as “Okay,” -70 to -80 as “Poor,” and -80 or worse as “Very poor.” Check the reading in the Ring app’s Device Health. Check upload speed separately
A strong signal and a supported band do not by themselves establish that the internet connection has enough upload capacity. Ring says a device needs at least 1 Mbps to work and recommends these upload speeds by video resolution; these are portfolio-level recommendations, not a single universal speed requirement for every model. Complete setup without interrupting it
- In the Ring app, open Device Settings → Device Health → Device Details and confirm the exact product name.
- Check that model’s Wi-Fi specifications. Choose 2.4 GHz for a 2.4-GHz-only model; for a dual-band model, select a supported network shown in the app.
- Enter the network password when prompted. If setup fails, distinguish a network that is not detected from one that is detected but rejected, then check channel or encryption compatibility as appropriate.
- Let the device complete any firmware update. Do not interrupt it during the update.
- After setup, review Device Health for RSSI and assess upload speed against the guidance for the doorbell’s resolution.
