Usually, the difference is modest rather than transformative. A 180Hz screen refreshes 25% more often than a 144Hz screen, which can make fast motion look a little smoother when your game consistently produces enough frames. But there is no direct study here showing that players notice or perform better at 180Hz than at 144Hz. If you already like your 144Hz monitor, the refresh-rate increase alone is a weak reason to replace it; if you are buying a new display, 180Hz can be a sensible choice when its overall performance and price are competitive.
What changes when you move from 144Hz to 180Hz?
At 144Hz, a new refresh begins about every 6.94 milliseconds. At 180Hz, it begins about every 5.56 milliseconds—a reduction of roughly 1.39 milliseconds per refresh interval. These figures describe refresh timing, not the time a pixel takes to change color.

| Refresh rate | Time between refreshes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 144Hz | 6.94 ms | RTINGS.com refresh-rate reference |
| 180Hz | 5.56 ms | RTINGS.com refresh-rate reference |
The 180Hz rate is 25% higher, but perceived smoothness does not necessarily improve by 25%. You may see a small improvement in fast motion, especially in games that can deliver frame rates close to the display’s refresh rate. The actual impression depends on the monitor’s motion handling and on how consistently the game presents frames.

Will you notice the difference?
Some players may notice a slight increase in smoothness; others may find 144Hz and 180Hz difficult to tell apart in ordinary play. The available evidence supports a cautious expectation, not a guarantee: a 2026 study by NVIDIA Research tested 101 gamers on a custom FPS target-acquisition task at 60Hz, 144Hz, and 360Hz. Participants could distinguish 60Hz from 360Hz in its perception task, but the study did not test 180Hz or a direct 144Hz-versus-180Hz comparison.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
For performance in that specific task, the study authors, including first author Adam J. Toth of the University of Limerick, reported: “However, performance did not significantly differ between 144Hz and 360Hz conditions.” That result does not establish how all games or players respond, but it is a reason not to assume that a higher refresh rate automatically produces a measurable competitive advantage. Read the study abstract.
Frame pacing can matter as much as the refresh-rate number
A high refresh-rate display cannot make unevenly delivered frames feel consistently smooth. NVIDIA’s 2024 variable-frame-timing research tested frequent frame-time variations of 4–12 ms around refresh rates from 30Hz to 240Hz. In the tested conditions, larger 12 ms variations harmed reported smoothness, while the effect was diminished for smaller 4 ms variations. This supports checking how steadily your system runs a game, not just whether a monitor advertises 180Hz. Read NVIDIA’s frame-timing research.

Is 180Hz worth it over 144Hz?
If you already own a good 144Hz monitor
Keep it if you are satisfied with its motion clarity, input response, resolution, and features. A move to 180Hz by itself is unlikely to feel like a major upgrade, and the evidence cited above does not show that it improves FPS results over 144Hz.

A 180Hz model is reasonable if its price and other characteristics compare well with the 144Hz alternative. Do not accept a worse panel, resolution, motion behavior, or feature set just to get the larger refresh-rate figure.

If you play competitive FPS games
Small timing differences may matter to some players, but the available study did not test 180Hz and found no significant performance difference between 144Hz and 360Hz in its particular target-acquisition task. Treat 180Hz as additional refresh headroom, not a proven route to better results.
What to compare on the monitors themselves
- Motion handling and pixel response: A claimed response time alone does not establish real motion clarity. LCD blur can reflect both pixel transitions and the way an image is held on screen; see NVIDIA’s explanation of LCD motion blur.
- Input lag: This is distinct from pixel response. RTINGS’ refresh-rate reference gives minimum center-of-display input-lag estimates of 3.47 ms at 144Hz and 2.78 ms at 180Hz. These are rate-derived estimates, not measurements of every monitor; actual displays should be compared using measurements for the specific models. See RTINGS’ input-lag measurement guidance.
- VRR support and behavior: Variable refresh rate can help keep presentation smooth as frame rates change. Check the exact monitor’s supported modes and how it behaves across its range.
- Resolution and achievable frame rate: The extra refresh capacity helps only when your computer, connection, monitor input, and game can supply frames at the intended rate. Check the monitor’s input bandwidth and supported modes rather than assuming every connection supports 180Hz at every resolution.
- Price and the rest of the feature set: Weigh panel quality, resolution, motion behavior, and useful features alongside refresh rate.
How to make a fair real-world comparison
- Set each monitor to its intended refresh rate in the operating system and in the game; do not assume the highest mode is active automatically.
- Where possible, use the same resolution and comparable connection conditions on both displays, and verify that each input supports the selected mode.
- Compare the same game scenes and pay attention to fast motion, frame pacing, and the monitor’s measured input lag and response behavior.
This is a practical comparison method, not a claim that a direct 144Hz-versus-180Hz test was performed.
