The trade-offs are a high launch price and a large, 4.7-pound chassis. For owners of an M4 Pro model, the measured improvements are real, but one review does not make an upgrade compelling for every workflow.
What you get with the 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max generation on March 3, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. The 16-inch model pairs either chip with a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, a 3,456 × 2,234 resolution, adaptive ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, and Apple-rated brightness of 1,000 nits sustained across the full screen for XDR content and up to 1,600 nits for HDR peaks. These are Apple specifications, not independent display measurements. See Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro technical specifications and launch announcement.

Both tiers have an 18-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine. M5 Pro has a 20-core GPU and 307GB/s memory bandwidth. M5 Max is offered with either a 32-core GPU and 460GB/s bandwidth or a 40-core GPU and 614GB/s bandwidth. Apple also specifies one video encode engine and one ProRes encode/decode engine for M5 Pro, versus two of each for M5 Max. The Max’s hardware advantages matter most when a workload can use them; the chip name alone does not guarantee a particular speedup.
| Configuration | GPU and memory bandwidth | Unified memory and SSD options | Media engines |
|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Pro | 20-core GPU; 307GB/s | Starts at 24GB memory and 1TB SSD; configurable up to 64GB and 4TB | One video encode engine; one ProRes encode/decode engine |
| M5 Max, 32-core GPU | 32-core GPU; 460GB/s | Max configurations start at 36GB memory and 2TB SSD; available options depend on chip/GPU configuration | Two video encode engines; two ProRes encode/decode engines |
| M5 Max, 40-core GPU | 40-core GPU; 614GB/s | Max configurations can be configured up to 128GB memory and 8TB SSD; available options depend on chip/GPU configuration | Two video encode engines; two ProRes encode/decode engines |

Where the M5 Pro model is strong
Independent tests show a substantial step over one M4 Pro comparison
Tom’s Guide tested an M5 Pro sample and recorded 4,306 single-core and 28,586 multicore in Geekbench 6. Its M4 Pro comparison scored 3,910 and 22,822, respectively. In the outlet’s HandBrake test, converting a 4K video to 1080p took 1 minute 45 seconds on M5 Pro versus 2 minutes 38 seconds on M4 Pro. These are results from that publication’s tests and systems, not guaranteed outcomes across applications or configurations. Tom’s Guide’s March 2026 review has the test context.
Apple separately claims up to 30% faster performance than a specified previous-generation 16-inch M4 Pro configuration: 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48GB unified memory and 4TB SSD. Apple also claims up to four times the previous generation’s AI performance, based on company testing in January and February 2026. Those are vendor comparisons, not independent benchmarks or promises for every task. The announcement describes Apple’s test basis at Apple Newsroom.

Long battery life, with different kinds of evidence
Apple rates the M5 Pro for up to 24 hours of video streaming or 17 hours of wireless web use; its M5 Max ratings are up to 22 and 16 hours, respectively. These are Apple’s stated maximums, and actual runtime varies with settings and use. Tom’s Guide measured 21 hours 10 minutes of continuous Wi-Fi web use at 150-nit brightness on its M5 Pro sample. The reviewer said only one battery run had been completed at publication time, so treat that figure as a single test result rather than a repeatable benchmark. Ports and display connectivity suit a desk setup
Apple lists Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack. Tom’s Guide reports that supported external-display configurations include up to three displays connected through Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI, subject to resolution and connection limits. What are the main drawbacks?
It costs a lot to get in
At launch in the United States, Apple announced starting prices of $2,699 for the 16-inch M5 Pro and $3,899 for the 16-inch M5 Max. These are launch prices, not a statement of current retail pricing; regional pricing, tax, discounts and availability can differ. Higher memory and storage configurations also affect the price. Apple’s announcement gives the launch figures.
The large screen comes with a large laptop
Tom’s Guide gives its M5 Pro review sample’s dimensions as 14.01 × 9.77 × 0.66 inches and weight as 4.7 pounds. The reviewer found it transportable in a backpack but described it as a big, bulky notebook. If you carry a laptop daily or work in tight spaces, the 16-inch size is a meaningful cost in convenience, not just a screen-size preference. These measurements are for the outlet’s sample; see its review.

The M5 Max premium needs a workload-based reason
M5 Max starts at a much higher US launch price than M5 Pro. Its larger GPU options, higher memory bandwidth, potential for more unified memory and extra media engines can be valuable for GPU-heavy work, large projects or demanding media workflows. For coding, photography and many general creative tasks, M5 Pro is a plausible fit; the Max makes more sense when a specific application or project needs the extra capacity or throughput. Apple positions M5 Pro for complex workflows and M5 Max for users pushing limits, including rigorous simulations, but no same-protocol independent Pro-versus-Max performance comparison is established here. Avoid paying the premium based on an assumed percentage gain. Configuration specifications and Apple’s positioning are in Apple’s technical page and announcement.
How to choose between M5 Pro and M5 Max
- Start with memory needs. Estimate the unified memory your actual projects require. M5 Pro configurations go up to 64GB, while M5 Max configurations can reach 128GB, depending on the chip/GPU option. If your work does not need the additional capacity, that ceiling alone may not justify Max.
- Check GPU demand and bandwidth. Identify whether your applications rely heavily on GPU computation or benefit from the 32- or 40-core Max GPU and its higher bandwidth. Do not infer a fixed speed advantage without a benchmark for your software and task.
- Count media-engine work. Frequent video encode or ProRes encode/decode jobs may make Max’s two engines of each type useful compared with Pro’s one. The benefit depends on the workload and application.
- Compare complete configurations, not starting prices alone. Add the memory and SSD capacity you need to each tier, then compare the actual configured prices available to you. Apple’s advertised launch starting prices are not current quotes.
- Account for the chassis. If the 16-inch screen is valuable for your workspace, the size may be a fair trade. If portability is the priority, the 4.7-pound review-sample weight is a reason to consider a smaller laptop instead.
Should an M4 Pro owner upgrade?
For many existing M4 Pro owners, not on the strength of the general benchmark gains alone. Tom’s Guide characterized M5 Pro as generally 15–20% faster and nearly 30 minutes longer-lasting than its predecessor, but judged those gains insufficient to warrant an upgrade for existing M4 Pro users. That is the reviewer’s assessment of its review, not a verdict for every workflow. An upgrade is easier to justify if a specific M5 Pro result solves a real bottleneck, or if your work now exceeds your current machine’s memory, performance or battery needs. The review’s direct benchmark examples are above; Apple’s up-to-30% claim uses a particular M4 Pro configuration as its comparison.
