The headline reports 1,551 Elasticsearch endpoints and 1,462 Memcached endpoints, but those figures are not a verified count of currently exposed servers. A DEV Community listing by StarkMan dated Sep 20 carries the figures; its article body could not be retrieved, so the scan date, geographic scope, endpoint definitions, fingerprint criteria and deduplication rules are unknown.

What do the Elasticsearch and Memcached figures mean?

The numbers—1,551 Elasticsearch endpoints and 1,462 Memcached endpoints—appear in the title of an article attributed to StarkMan in a DEV Community listing dated Sep 20. The listing tags the article with ZoomEye and exposure measurement and labels it a three-minute read. Those details identify the source of the figures, not how they were produced.

Because the article body is unavailable, the listing does not establish when the scan occurred, what geography or network range it covered, how an endpoint was fingerprinted, or whether duplicate addresses or services were removed. The figures therefore cannot be treated as a current census, a vulnerability count, or a like-for-like comparison. A reachable endpoint alone also does not prove compromise or unauthenticated access.

Why can’t the counts be compared directly?

Elasticsearch and Memcached are different services, and the listing supplies no measurement method with which to normalize their counts. It is not possible to determine why the Elasticsearch figure is higher. Unknown scan scope, timing, deduplication and fingerprinting could all affect the totals, so the difference should not be interpreted as a difference in risk or prevalence.

FortiGate-40F Firewall Appliance - 5 Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 Ports, Ideal for Small Businesses (Appliance Only, No Subscription) (FG-40F)
  • Compact and Efficient Design: The FortiGate 40F is designed for small to mid-sized businesses and enterprise branch offices, featuring a compact, fanless desktop form factor that ensures quiet operation and minimizes space usage.
  • Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
  • High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
  • Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
  • Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
  • Version and startup defaults: Elasticsearch 8.0 and later enables security automatically on first start; Memcached has listened only on TCP by default, with UDP off, since version 1.5.6.
  • Interfaces and controls: The services have different network behavior and security configurations, so their defaults do not yield a meaningful single “secure by default” score.
  • Measurement: Without the scan date, scope and endpoint-identification rules, neither count describes a known, comparable population.

Is Memcached safe to expose to the internet?

No. Memcached’s official configuration guide says, “You must not expose memcached directly to the internet, or otherwise any untrusted users.” That warning applies regardless of the headline count. Since Memcached 1.5.6, its default is to listen only on TCP, with UDP disabled; that default does not make an internet-facing service safe.

Restrict the listening interface

Memcached supports interface binding with the -l option. Configure it to listen only on the intended trusted interface rather than an address reachable from untrusted networks. The guide also describes Unix domain sockets; using one disables TCP and UDP. These are deployment options, not evidence that any endpoint in the headline is vulnerable or publicly reachable.

Does Elasticsearch have security enabled by default?

For Elasticsearch 8.0 and later, Elastic says security is enabled automatically when Elasticsearch starts for the first time. That statement is version-specific and applies to a fresh first start; existing unsecured clusters still need security setup. It does not establish that every older, migrated or already-running deployment is protected.

Production deployments need more than the minimal setup

Elastic cautions that its minimal-security procedure is insufficient for clusters running in production mode. Multi-node clusters need TLS on the transport layer, and TLS on the HTTP layer is highly recommended. Authentication and encryption configuration should be checked for the actual cluster rather than inferred from its product name or version alone.

  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

What a reader can responsibly conclude

The headline offers two attributed endpoint figures, not enough information to estimate today’s exposed population or compare the services’ security. The actionable guidance comes from the product documentation: do not expose Memcached directly to the internet, and configure Elasticsearch’s security and TLS requirements for its version and deployment mode.
