What should I livestream on YouTube?
YouTube recognizes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming as different ways to go live. The right option depends on what you are doing, not on buying the most equipment: YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips for setup guidance.

Invite viewers to: Ask questions while you demonstrate or suggest a problem for you to solve. Lightest setup: A webcam or mobile stream can work for a straightforward presentation; use an encoder if you need screen overlays.

Lightest setup: A webcam or mobile device and a short question list.

YouTube cites gaming as a Live example and suggests making room for chat, breaks, updates, and channel traditions. 7. Demonstrate a tool, product, or workflow
What happens: Show a real task from beginning to end using a tool, product, or project, and explain what it does in context. This is a format suggestion, not a proven growth tactic. Lightest setup: A webcam or phone for physical demonstrations; an encoder if the workflow is on-screen. Keep claims accurate and disclose commercial relationships when applicable.
8. Make a community hangout repeatable

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose an idea that fits your channel
Compare concepts by the work they require from you and the participation they invite. YouTube’s guidance offers starting points rather than an official ranking of formats.
- Match the activity to the streaming method. Mobile suits quick updates and vlogging; webcam works for direct-to-camera formats; encoders support gameplay, overlays, and higher-production events. Choose the simplest setup that shows the activity clearly.
- Decide how viewers will participate. A Q&A needs questions; a poll-driven challenge needs choices that can affect what happens next. Chat can also support breaks, updates, and recurring rituals. YouTube describes moderation tools including slow mode, blocked words, and holding potentially inappropriate messages for review. See its Live community tips.
- Consider whether it can become a series. A repeated workshop, Q&A, or hangout can give viewers a familiar format, but repeat it only if it suits your subject and audience.
- Give the event a promotion hook and archive value. A specific skill, question, challenge, or event makes the reason to attend easier to understand. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours before going live; see its live-stream promotion guidance. Afterward, consider whether to make the archive public and organize it with highlights or playlists. Mobile streams that meet YouTube’s stated requirements may have a Shorts highlight option; check current Studio guidance rather than assuming the feature is available to every creator.
- Choose one goal to review. Depending on the format, that might be reach, retention, chat, or new subscribers. YouTube recommends reviewing impressions, impressions click-through rate, views, average view duration, and traffic sources, and its live metrics include concurrent viewers, chat rate, watch time, new subscribers, and retention measures. See Live analytics tips and live-stream metrics. Compare streams of similar types: audience behavior can differ by format, and metrics alone do not prove that an idea caused growth.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos between live events, StreamNeo is a separate option from these interactive live ideas.
