Fifteen people were charged by criminal complaint on October 1, 2026, in a federal bank-fraud conspiracy case involving checks allegedly stolen from mailboxes. Prosecutors say the alleged scheme sought to defraud individuals, financial institutions and the U.S. Treasury of more than $620,000. The figure is an alleged target, not a confirmed loss, and none of the defendants has been convicted.
What prosecutors allege
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York says the complaint accuses the 15 defendants of conspiring to commit or attempt bank fraud. It alleges they were members or associates of the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation (UGSN), which prosecutors say operated in Albany and elsewhere since at least September 2024, and that bank fraud was among the crimes used to seek revenue for the group. These are allegations in a complaint, not findings of fact. The DOJ announcement says the amount allegedly targeted exceeded $620,000; it does not establish that amount as a verified loss or recovery.
How the checks were allegedly handled
According to the complaint as described by local outlet Orleans Hub, the alleged method was to take checks from residential and business mailboxes and deposit fraudulent checks into accounts. The outlet reports that at least 59 checks were deposited into accounts held by alleged co-conspirators at 17 financial institutions, affecting at least 39 victim account holders in the Northern District of New York and elsewhere. These counts are reported by the outlet from court documents; the underlying complaint was not available for independent review here. Orleans Hub’s account also describes separate local drug-investigation material, which is distinct from the federal bank-fraud charge.

The announcement lists their ages as ranging from 24 to 41. Naming them as defendants does not establish that any person committed the alleged conduct.
How the investigation and case stand
The DOJ says the FBI Albany Financial Crimes Task Force investigated the case. Its members include the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and Albany Police Department; the release also lists additional agencies as assisting.

Procedural details beyond the announcement come from secondary reporting and should be treated cautiously. Blue Water Healthy Living reported that FBI agents searched a Binghamton residence on October 1, 2026, that Arthur Lilly and Antoinette Gueits were detained in Binghamton, and that a detention hearing for Tori Staton was scheduled for October 5 in Syracuse. That report does not establish what happened at the hearing. Orleans Hub separately reported that Jeffrey Ghee was taken into federal custody and transported to Rochester to appear in federal court. A current docket or later court outcome is not established by these reports.

The DOJ says the complaint charges bank-fraud conspiracy. The release gives the statutory maximum for the charged count as 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million and up to five years of supervised release. Those are maximums, not a prediction of a sentence or an indication that any defendant will receive them. The case remains at the accusation stage: the DOJ states that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
