For Gears of War: E-Day, think of cover as one part of combat—not the whole plan. The Coalition identifies movement, cover, weapons, and enemies as the game’s core pillars, so the most useful habit is to adjust your position and weapon as each encounter changes. These 15 tips offer practical starting points for campaign, co-op, and Horde Siege, based on documented mechanics and a launch-window review rather than firsthand testing.
15 Gears of War: E-Day tips for combat and exploration
1. Treat cover as a starting point, not your entire movement plan
Cover remains central, but E-Day also updates movement and traversal. Use a protected position to assess the fight, then look for a useful route or a better angle instead of assuming you should stay behind the first wall you reach. The Coalition describes movement, cover, weapons, and enemies as connected parts of combat. The Coalition’s gameplay update says, “The mix of enemy combinations, layout, weapon choice and player skill is what makes Gears feel like Gears.”

2. Look for routes through lower cover
A Windows Central launch-window review reports that E-Day lets players take cover in lower spaces than before. Check the shape and height of nearby cover when choosing a route; a low barrier may offer a way to move through an area rather than only a place to stop. That observation comes from one review, so treat it as a useful mechanic to watch for, not a guarantee about every encounter.
3. Use climbing and vaulting to reposition
The same review reports climbing and vaulting as traversal options. Consider them when you need to change position or take a route through the environment. They are not automatically safe: judge nearby threats and available cover before committing to a move.

- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.

- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
4. Reassess your weapon when the enemy mix changes
The Coalition describes enemy combinations and weapon choice as part of the encounter puzzle. If your current weapon is not serving the situation, consider switching rather than forcing one approach through every fight. The right choice depends on the enemies and the space you are fighting in; the available guidance does not establish a universally best weapon.
5. Read the encounter layout before committing
Notice where cover, open ground, and possible routes sit in relation to the enemies. The Coalition specifically identifies layout alongside enemy combinations, weapon choice, and player skill as a factor in combat. Use that information to decide where to move and which threats to address, rather than treating the fight as a simple exchange of fire from one position.
6. Watch for different reactions to damage
Windows Central observed destructible armor and hit reactions on some earlier enemies, but less reaction from some larger enemies. Do not assume every target will respond visibly or similarly when hit. Treat this as one reviewer’s observation, and pay attention to what the particular enemy in front of you is doing.

7. Do not chase every pickup automatically
Exploration can uncover modifications and collectibles, but it also takes time. Windows Central’s reviewer found that searching for weapon modifications could interrupt campaign pacing, and that some pickups did not suit their preferred weapons. Decide whether a detour is worthwhile for your current loadout and the way you want to play.
8. Check whether a modification fits a weapon you use
Before prioritizing a found weapon modification, check which weapon it supports and whether that weapon fits your approach. The review notes that some field modifications were for weapons the reviewer did not want to carry. A pickup is not automatically useful just because it is available.
9. Coordinate co-op around the fight, not a fixed script
Official gameplay materials describe enemies as creating different challenges and opportunities in co-op. Talk with your partners about what the encounter demands, then coordinate positions and attention accordingly. No single role or division of tasks is established as best for every fight.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Which campaign co-op format should you choose?
Xbox lists three ways to play the campaign: solo, two-player split-screen on console, or online co-op for up to four players. Choose based on who is playing and where, and check online access before arranging a session.

| Solo | One player | Listed as a campaign option by Xbox. |
| Split-screen | Two players on console | Console-only, according to Xbox. |
| Online campaign co-op | Up to four players online | Requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately. |
These format and access details come from Xbox’s E-Day product listing. The listing covers Xbox Series X|S and Windows; Xbox Wire also identifies Steam as a platform. Check the current store listing and PC requirements before choosing a PC version or making hardware decisions. Xbox says the game supports up to 4K and 60 FPS across campaign and multiplayer with a compatible display; that is not a PC performance guarantee.
10. Pick the campaign format that fits your group
Use solo if you are playing alone, console split-screen if two people want to share a console, or online campaign co-op for a larger group. The official listing specifies up to four online campaign players, while split-screen is limited to console.

11. Confirm online access before inviting friends
Online campaign co-op and online multiplayer require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately. Check that the account or accounts joining online meet that requirement before setting a time to play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you approach Horde Siege and Versus?
Horde Siege and Versus are different multiplayer modes, so do not assume a campaign tactic transfers unchanged into either one. Horde Siege is co-op wave survival with class and equipment choices; Versus is competitive PvP with updated movement and combat.
12. Choose a Horde Siege class with the squad in mind
Official launch materials list four Horde Siege classes: Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher. Consider what the squad is trying to do when choosing one, but do not treat any class as the universally best pick; the published materials do not establish one.

- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
13. Treat Horde Siege equipment as a combination
The Coalition says armor, tactical gear, and weapon modifications can be combined, and that their interactions matter at higher difficulties. Think about the equipment as a set rather than making each choice in isolation. The official guidance does not specify exact stat effects or a named build.
14. Experiment before settling on a high-difficulty setup
Multiplayer guidance emphasizes finding useful connections between modifications. Try combinations and observe how they suit your squad before committing to a setup for higher difficulty. No specific combination or guaranteed result is established in the published guidance.
15. Keep campaign habits separate from Versus decisions
Versus is a competitive mode, distinct from campaign combat and Horde Siege. Although it also uses updated movement and combat, the sources do not establish that a campaign tactic will work the same way in PvP. Adapt to the mode rather than carrying over assumptions without checking how the fight unfolds.
