There is no single best-sounding headphone for every listener. The Sennheiser HD 560S is the strongest sound-first choice for quiet rooms, while the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless is the wireless pick when discounted below the cutoff. For active noise cancellation (ANC), choose the Anker Soundcore Space Q45; for an inexpensive wireless all-rounder, the Sennheiser ACCENTUM Plus is compelling at its observed $129.95 sale price. The list includes open- and closed-back, wired and wireless over-ear models; true-wireless earbuds are excluded.

Recommendations weigh sound and tuning most heavily (35%), followed by comfort and fit (20%), verified value (15%), ANC or passive isolation (10%), battery and connectivity (10%), microphone performance (5%), and durability, repairability and accessories (5%). Wired open-back models shift the ANC and battery weight toward soundstage, imaging and cable quality.
Independent comparisons from RTINGS currently place the HD 560S among the leading audiophile options below $200 and identify the Space Q45 as a leading noise-cancelling value. SoundGuys’ Bluetooth and budget-ANC coverage adds useful alternatives.

1. Sennheiser HD 560S — best overall sound for home listening
The HD 560S is the clearest choice when “superior sound” means accurate tonal balance, detail and a convincing sense of space rather than wireless features. Its open-back design gives instruments room to breathe and places vocals naturally, making it particularly effective for acoustic music, classical recordings, jazz and well-produced games. It is not a travel headphone: sound leaks in both directions, there is no ANC and it requires a cable.
Fit and comfort still depend on head shape, glasses and clamp preference. Use it at a desk or in a quiet room, and check the current Sennheiser listing because availability and price have varied between official pages. RTINGS currently ranks it as a leading audiophile choice under $200 at its price guide.
2. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless — best wireless sound when discounted
Momentum 4 combines a rich, detailed presentation with ANC, app EQ, multipoint and very long claimed battery life. Sennheiser lists up to 60 hours, a manufacturer figure that can vary with volume, ANC and codec; it is not a universal independent runtime result. The tuning is more engaging than strictly neutral and can be adjusted in the companion app.

Regular pricing is generally above $200, so this is a watch-for-sale recommendation. For refurbished or open-box units, confirm battery condition, included accessories, warranty, seller authorization and return period. Official product information is at Sennheiser.
3. Anker Soundcore Space Q45 — best ANC value
The Space Q45 is the practical pick for planes, trains and offices. Its ANC is aimed at low-frequency engine, HVAC and road noise; no ANC headphone removes nearby speech, sudden clatter or sound entering through a poor earcup seal. The Q45 has a warm, bass-forward balance and app-based EQ, so it is more adjustable than its default sound suggests.
It is less natural and refined than the HD 560S, especially for critical listening, but offers the feature set most travelers need. RTINGS identifies it as a leading under-$200 noise-cancelling choice at its ANC roundup.
4. Sennheiser ACCENTUM Plus Wireless — best affordable wireless all-rounder
ACCENTUM Plus provides ANC, transparency, app controls and a lively, spacious-for-the-class sound without Momentum pricing. Sennheiser’s U.S. page showed $129.95, reduced from $249.95, when checked; treat that as a dated sale signal rather than a permanent price. The manufacturer claims up to 50 hours and says a 10-minute charge can provide up to five hours of playback: both figures depend on usage conditions.

- Adjustable headband for comfort and secure fit
- 3.5mm plug and 4 ft. cord
- Deep base response
- Frequency response 80-18,000 hz, 91db SPL sensitivity
- 32 Ohms
ANC and materials are below Momentum level, but the combination of sound, comfort and features is unusually strong near its observed sale price. See the official specifications at Sennheiser.
5. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x — best closed-back wired headphone
The ATH-M50x remains a dependable closed-back choice for monitoring, editing and everyday listening. Its punchy bass, clear upper range and strong passive isolation work better in shared spaces than an open-back Sennheiser. The trade-off is a narrower soundstage and a more colored, energetic balance that some listeners may find fatiguing.
It has no battery or Bluetooth latency and is easy to drive from a laptop, interface or controller. Choose it over the HD 560S when isolation and a replaceable cable matter more than a speaker-like presentation.
6. JLab JBuds Lux ANC — best low-cost ANC
SoundGuys positions the JBuds Lux ANC as a leading sub-$100 value. Its sound is intentionally fun, with elevated bass and app adjustment rather than strict neutrality. That makes it suitable for pop, hip-hop and commuting, but less ideal for listeners evaluating recordings or seeking premium detail.
Independent testing coverage and premium-feeling materials are less established than on Sony, Sennheiser or Anker’s better-known lines. Buy from a seller with a clear return policy and treat comfort, microphone quality and long-term app support as personal checks.
7. Sony WH-1000XM4 — best older premium travel headphone on sale
The WH-1000XM4 still offers polished ANC, a smooth customizable sound, multipoint and useful travel features. Its age changes the buying decision: battery wear, hinge condition, firmware support and warranty matter more than the original feature list. It belongs here only when a reliable retailer has new, refurbished or open-box stock below $200.
Do not pay an inflated price simply because it was once a flagship. Sony’s official product page is here; compare condition and return terms before ordering.

8. Sony ULT WEAR — best for bass-heavy listening
ULT WEAR is for listeners who want physical, emphatic bass. Its ULT modes can make electronic music and hip-hop exciting, but they can also mask vocals, kick-drum texture and fine detail. Keep the bass enhancement off or moderate when evaluating a mix.

9. Sony WH-CH720N — best lightweight commuter
The WH-CH720N prioritizes low weight, accessible ANC and Sony’s EQ controls. It is easier to wear for long commutes than heavier premium models, but its thin-feeling construction and less authoritative low end reveal its budget position. ANC is useful against steady transport noise, not a substitute for a good seal.
It is a good student or commuter choice when comfort and price outrank luxury materials. Verify current stock and price at Sony.
10. JBL Live 770NC — best office and multipoint option
The Live 770NC targets workdays with multipoint connectivity, app tuning, ANC and a consumer-friendly lively balance. It can switch between a computer and phone more conveniently than many budget sets, although ANC detail retrieval and microphone performance are not class-leading in every environment.

11. Sennheiser HD 505 — best newer open-back alternative
The HD 505 offers a detailed, energetic open-back presentation for listeners who want a newer alternative to the HD 560S. It shares the fundamental limitations of every open-back model: no isolation, audible leakage and a cable-only setup. Availability and pricing fluctuate, and official listings can place it above $200, so treat it as a sale watch.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
It belongs in a quiet-room shortlist, not a plane, office or shared-bedroom recommendation.
12. Sennheiser HD 599 — best comfort-oriented open-back
The HD 599 favors relaxed listening with a warm, smooth and forgiving balance. It is less neutral and less compact than the HD 560S, but its easy presentation suits long sessions and recordings that sound harsh on brighter headphones. Earpad depth, headband pressure and glasses comfort remain individual fit questions.
Official office-headphone listings have shown it below $200 during sales; check the current page at Sennheiser.
13. Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2 — best wireless studio-style option
The BT2 adds Bluetooth convenience, multipoint and a wired mode to the familiar M50x-style punchy tuning. It works well for listeners who alternate between a phone and a laptop and still want a cable option for interfaces or controllers. The presentation remains closed-in compared with an open-back model, and wireless DSP can alter the result.
SoundGuys places it around the $198 class, so verify the retailer’s current price before purchase. Use the manufacturer page at Audio-Technica to confirm the exact model and accessories.
14. Beats Studio Pro — best Apple-friendly alternative
Studio Pro is the Beats option to consider when Apple-device integration, punchy sound and wireless convenience are priorities. Its tuning is clearer than older Beats generations, but comfort and ANC should be compared directly with the Momentum, Sony and JBL alternatives at the same price. Android users can still use it, but should not assume Apple-specific conveniences will carry over.
Include it only when the current price is $200 or less. Product details are on Beats’ official page.

15. Anker Soundcore Space One — best budget wireless alternative
The Space One is a feature-rich everyday ANC headphone around the $100 class in SoundGuys’ coverage. It offers a bass-emphasized, customizable sound, making it a practical step up from basic Bluetooth sets for commuting and casual listening. Build quality and refinement are midrange, and it will not sound as open or natural as the HD 560S.
Choose it when app EQ, ANC and price matter more than premium materials or the last word in detail. Confirm the current model and sale price at Soundcore.
Wired or wireless: which sounds better?
Choose wired when sound is the priority
- Wired headphones usually provide more sound quality per dollar and never require charging.
- They avoid Bluetooth codec negotiation and generally have lower latency.
- Open-back wired designs such as the HD 560S, HD 505 and HD 599 deliver spacious imaging at this budget.
Choose wireless when convenience is the priority
- Wireless models add ANC, transparency, microphones, multipoint, automatic pause and app EQ.
- A $150 wired open-back headphone can sound more natural than a $200 wireless ANC model, but it cannot replace that model on an airplane.
- Battery degradation, discontinued apps, firmware bugs and inconsistent multipoint are long-term risks; passive wired mode may disable ANC or EQ.
Open-back versus closed-back
Open-back earcups sound more spacious and natural in quiet rooms and can help with positional cues in single-player games. They leak music and admit outside noise, so they are unsuitable for public transport, offices, libraries, recording near a microphone or shared bedrooms.

Closed-back headphones isolate better and usually provide stronger bass presence. They are practical outside the home but can sound more resonant or congested than an open-back design at the same price.
What “superior sound” should mean
- Tonal balance: neutral, warm, bright or bass-heavy describes frequency emphasis, not quality by itself.
- Detail and separation: good headphones keep vocals, cymbals and instruments distinct without simply becoming harsh.
- Distortion: clean playback at normal and high volume matters more than maximum loudness.
- Stage and imaging: open-back models usually create more space, while closed-back models can place bass closer and more forcefully.
- Processing: ANC, Bluetooth DSP and EQ can change the sound with ANC on versus off.
Codec badges such as AAC, aptX or LDAC do not guarantee better sound. Both devices must support the codec, and tuning, fit, DSP and recording quality usually matter more. iPhones commonly use SBC or AAC; Windows support for higher-quality codecs varies by computer and driver.
ANC, microphones and calls
ANC is strongest against continuous low-frequency noise such as aircraft engines, trains, buses and air conditioners. It is less reliable against nearby speech, sudden sounds and high-frequency clatter. A poor seal caused by glasses, hair or ear shape can reduce both bass and ANC.
Sound quality and microphone quality are separate. Before buying for meetings, check indoor voice clarity, wind handling, sidetone, transparency behavior and whether the microphone works in wired mode. Compatibility with Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android and conferencing apps can differ, especially when Bluetooth switches to a lower-quality microphone profile.

Battery, charging and connectivity checklist
- Manufacturer runtime figures often assume ANC off, moderate volume or a particular codec. Treat Sennheiser’s 50-hour ACCENTUM Plus and 60-hour Momentum 4 figures as claims, not universal test results.
- Check whether USB-C is charging-only or also supports USB audio.
- Confirm whether the headset can play while charging and what a fast charge provides.
- Ask how the battery can be serviced after several years; many wireless batteries are not user-replaceable.
- For gaming, test Bluetooth latency, console compatibility and whether a wired cable or boom microphone is supported.
Comfort and fit can outweigh measurements
Compare clamp force, earcup depth, headband pressure, heat buildup, weight, glasses compatibility and earpad replaceability. Large ears may touch shallow pads, while a loose seal can weaken bass and ANC. No model is universally comfortable; buy from a retailer with a usable return period.
Best choices by reader profile
- Quiet-room audiophile: Sennheiser HD 560S.
- Wireless listener: Momentum 4 below $200; otherwise ACCENTUM Plus.
- Traveler: Soundcore Space Q45, or WH-1000XM4 only at a verified sub-$200 price.
- Office calls and multipoint: JBL Live 770NC, ACCENTUM Plus or Sony WH-CH720N, depending on current price and microphone results.
- Bass fan: Sony ULT WEAR, with ULT modes moderated for vocals and detail.
- Apple-focused buyer: Beats Studio Pro when discounted to $200 or less.
- Gaming in a quiet room: HD 560S or another open-back model for imaging; use wired connection to avoid Bluetooth latency.
- Lowest-cost ANC: JLab JBuds Lux ANC; Space One is the more established feature-rich alternative.
How to buy without being misled by a sale
- Check the exact color, condition and seller; a one-color promotion or refurbished unit is not the same as a new regular-price product.
- Apply the $199.99-before-tax rule and exclude conditional coupons, rewards and trade-ins.
- For refurbished or open-box Momentum 4 or XM4 units, verify warranty length, battery condition, accessories, cosmetic grade and return period.
- Compare the price with the product’s “buy at” guidance above rather than with an old MSRP.
- Confirm the return policy after testing fit, ANC, microphone behavior and wired operation.
Prices and stock can change quickly. Sennheiser’s U.S. pages have shown materially different HD 560S, ACCENTUM Plus and Momentum 4 prices and availability across pages and dates; recheck the product page immediately before ordering.
