For most buyers, a 1440p 240Hz monitor is the better choice. A 300Hz display refreshes every 3.33 milliseconds instead of every 4.17ms at 240Hz, a maximum timing gain of about 0.83ms. That difference can matter to a highly competitive player whose system holds nearly 300 frames per second, but it is small when the game runs closer to 240fps, and it does not compensate for a slow pixel response, excessive overdrive or poor variable-refresh tuning.

Choose 1440p 300Hz when competitive FPS is your main use, your CPU and GPU can sustain frame rates close to 300fps at 2560×1440, and the price premium is modest. Otherwise, spend the difference on a faster graphics card, a better panel with reliable response behavior, or storage and peripherals that improve the rest of your setup.

What 240Hz and 300Hz actually change

Refresh rate is the maximum number of times a monitor can draw a new image each second. A 240Hz panel can present up to 240 refreshes per second; a 300Hz panel can present up to 300. The refresh interval is the time available for each refresh:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Refresh rate Time per refresh Maximum interval reduction versus 240Hz
60Hz 16.67ms —
120Hz 8.33ms —
240Hz 4.17ms Baseline
300Hz 3.33ms About 0.83ms faster

The 0.83ms figure is a best-case timing difference, not a guaranteed reduction in total input latency. A complete click-to-photon path also includes game processing, the CPU render queue, GPU rendering, scanout, pixel response and any synchronization setting. If a game produces 180fps, the monitor cannot display 300 distinct frames per second; if it produces 280fps, a 300Hz screen can show more of those updates than a 240Hz screen, but the advantage remains incremental.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Both options are already much faster than 60Hz or 144Hz. Moving from 60Hz to 240Hz cuts the refresh interval by 12.5ms, while moving from 240Hz to 300Hz cuts it by less than 1ms. That is why the practical decision depends more on sustained frame rate and panel quality than on the headline number.

What controlled testing proves—and what it does not

NVIDIA’s 2019 aiming study

NVIDIA Research tested aiming tasks at 60Hz, 120Hz and 240Hz under controlled conditions. Performance improved monotonically as refresh rate increased, and the authors concluded: “We conclude that 240 hz, today’s highest-speed display technology, provides a competitive advantage.” The result supports a real benefit from high refresh rates for those tasks, particularly when a player can supply the corresponding frames.

The experiment stopped at 240Hz. It did not compare 240Hz with 300Hz, so it cannot establish that 300Hz produces a distinct competitive advantage. Claims that 300Hz is decisively better should therefore be treated as an inference from the shorter refresh interval, not as a measured result from that study.

Later evidence through 240Hz

A separate 2024 arXiv preprint tested refresh rates up to 240Hz with 26 participants. It adds evidence about high-refresh performance but also does not answer the 300Hz-versus-240Hz question directly. Individual results can vary with task, player skill, frame-rate stability, display tuning and experimental setup.

In practical terms, the evidence supports buying a genuinely fast display for competitive play, while leaving the size of the extra benefit above 240Hz uncertain. A 300Hz purchase is a reasonable optimization for a narrow use case, not a universally proven upgrade.

Can your computer drive 300Hz at 1440p?

To use 300Hz meaningfully, the game must render frames near 300fps. The display will still operate at 300Hz with lower frame rates, but many refresh opportunities will show repeated frames or wait for a variable-refresh update. Check the performance of the exact games you play rather than relying on a graphics card’s product tier.

Estimate the real frame-rate requirement

  • 300fps average: the panel can be supplied with a new frame for nearly every refresh, assuming frame-time consistency.
  • 240–280fps: 300Hz can still reduce waiting in some moments, but the visible difference from a well-tuned 240Hz setup is subtle.
  • Below 200fps: a 240Hz monitor already has substantial headroom; improving frame-time consistency is usually more valuable than adding 60Hz of ceiling.
  • Highly variable frame rates: enable a suitable variable-refresh range and cap the frame rate to avoid latency spikes, tearing or repeated transitions.

What limits 1440p esports performance

Competitive shooters often become CPU-limited at very high frame rates, especially at low or medium graphics settings. A faster GPU does not guarantee 300fps if the game thread, memory latency or background processes are the bottleneck. Use an in-game frame-time graph or an external overlay to check 1% lows and consistency, not just the average.

At 2560×1440, rendering 300fps requires a new frame every 3.33ms. If your system regularly takes 5ms, 8ms or longer to render a frame, the monitor cannot create missing information. Lowering visual settings can raise the frame rate, but it may also reduce image quality or increase CPU limitation. Test your preferred settings in the actual maps and modes you play.

Connection and operating-system checks

Use a modern DisplayPort or HDMI connection that explicitly supports 2560×1440 at 300Hz for the monitor model and graphics card. Select the high-refresh mode in the operating system’s advanced display settings and in the GPU control panel; some monitors default to 60Hz after installation. Use the supplied cable when possible, and verify the selected refresh rate in-game because a desktop setting does not always override an application profile.

Motion clarity is more than the Hz rating

Blur Busters explains that sample-and-hold displays, pixel response and strobe backlights all affect perceived motion. A panel that refreshes at 300Hz can look less clear than a well-tuned 240Hz model if its pixels transition slowly or its overdrive creates bright inverse trails.

Pixel response and overshoot

At 240Hz, a refresh lasts 4.17ms; at 300Hz, it lasts 3.33ms. Pixel transitions need to complete within that window to avoid visible smearing. Ask for response measurements across multiple transitions, not a single advertised gray-to-gray number. Aggressive overdrive may make a specification look faster while producing overshoot, halos or inverse ghosting on dark-to-light edges.

Use the monitor’s middle overdrive mode as a starting point and inspect moving test patterns and real gameplay. The fastest mode is often unsuitable at lower frame rates, where its voltage correction can become more obvious.

Variable refresh rate

Variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronizes the panel’s refresh timing with delivered frames, reducing tearing and uneven pacing. Compare the stated VRR range, whether it works over your chosen input, and whether low-frame-rate compensation is supported. A 48–300Hz range, for example, allows synchronization down to 48fps; below that threshold, behavior depends on the monitor and graphics driver.

For latency-sensitive play, cap the frame rate slightly below the VRR ceiling when recommended by the monitor or GPU vendor. If the cap is too high, the system can hit the ceiling and introduce queued frames or occasional tearing; if it is too low, you leave refresh capacity unused.

Backlight strobing

Strobe modes flash the backlight briefly to reduce sample-and-hold blur. Blur Busters notes the trade-offs: strobing can lower brightness, introduce flicker and restrict VRR operation. A 240Hz panel with a clean, usable strobe mode may look clearer during fast camera pans than a 300Hz panel that relies only on sample-and-hold. Check whether strobing works at your target frame rate and whether the mode disables adaptive sync.

Compare the panels, not just the refresh number

Two 1440p displays with different refresh rates can differ substantially in comfort and image quality. Evaluate these characteristics before paying for 300Hz.

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it matters
Panel technology Is it IPS, OLED, VA or another design? Influences response behavior, contrast, viewing angles, brightness and burn-in considerations.
Measured response Are transitions fast across the refresh range? Slow transitions erase part of the theoretical 0.83ms advantage.
Overdrive Are there adjustable modes without obvious overshoot? Lets you tune clarity for both high and fluctuating frame rates.
HDR and brightness What peak and sustained brightness, local dimming and HDR certification are specified? Determines whether games and video gain meaningful dynamic range.
Contrast and black level What native contrast and dark-room performance are reported? Affects shadow detail and comfort in dim environments.
Ergonomics Does the stand provide height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment? Correct positioning reduces neck and eye strain during long sessions.
Viewing comfort Is brightness stable, and are flicker controls and a usable low-brightness mode available? High refresh does not prevent discomfort caused by glare, flicker or excessive luminance.

For a single-player or mixed-use system, stronger contrast, HDR, resolution clarity, ergonomics and warranty support may be visible every day, while the 300Hz ceiling may rarely be used.

What models and availability indicate

NVIDIA’s current catalogue, accessed in 2026, lists the AOC Q25G4S as a 2560×1440 display with a 48–300Hz range. The same catalogue lists multiple QHD ASUS and LG models at 240Hz or higher. Catalogue entries and specifications can change by region, firmware and product revision, so confirm the exact input bandwidth, VRR behavior and warranty terms before ordering.

The AOC Q25G4S is a useful search phrase when looking for a QHD 300Hz monitor, but a listing is not a guarantee of stock, price or availability in your country. Treat retailer inventory and promotional pricing as temporary until verified at checkout.

Price premium and total value

A 300Hz model costs more only if its components, tuning or market positioning justify the difference; refresh rate alone does not establish value. Compare models at the same resolution and panel class, then account for warranty length, dead-pixel policy, return shipping and the cost of the GPU needed to reach 300fps.

When the premium is rational

  • You play competitive FPS titles for most of your gaming time.
  • Your measured frame rate remains near 300fps at 1440p, including demanding maps and 1% lows.
  • The 300Hz model has verified fast transitions, low overshoot and a useful VRR range.
  • The price difference is small enough that it does not force a weaker GPU, poor ergonomics or a shorter warranty.

When 240Hz is the better investment

  • Your frame rate usually sits between 160 and 240fps.
  • You also play cinematic, single-player or HDR-heavy games.
  • The 240Hz alternative offers better contrast, brightness, response tuning, stand adjustment or warranty coverage.
  • You are choosing between a stronger graphics card and a monitor ceiling you cannot regularly reach.

Set up either monitor for low latency and clean motion

  1. Connect the correct input. Use a certified cable and port that supports 2560×1440 at the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
  2. Select the refresh rate. In Windows, open Settings, System, Display, Advanced display, then choose 240Hz or 300Hz. Confirm the same value in the GPU control panel.
  3. Enable adaptive sync. Turn on the monitor’s VRR option, then enable the compatible variable-refresh feature in the graphics driver.
  4. Choose a moderate overdrive mode. Test normal, fast and fastest settings with moving objects; keep the mode with the least visible overshoot rather than the one with the biggest advertised response number.
  5. Set a frame-rate cap. Start a few frames below the VRR ceiling and adjust after checking frame-time graphs. Remove the cap only if you deliberately accept ceiling behavior or tearing.
  6. Test strobing separately. Compare the monitor’s strobe mode at a stable frame rate. Keep it only if brightness and flicker are comfortable and adaptive sync is not required for your games.
  7. Calibrate comfort. Lower brightness for the room, position the top of the screen near eye level and reduce glare. A technically faster display is not an upgrade if it causes fatigue.

Decision guide by player type

Dedicated competitive FPS player

Choose 300Hz if your system consistently approaches 300fps and you are comfortable paying for a specialized advantage that is likely to be subtle. Prioritize tested response times, low overshoot and stable frame pacing. Keep a 240Hz option if it offers clearly better tuning or if the 300Hz premium is substantial.

Mixed gamer and content consumer

Choose 240Hz. It provides the large jump from ordinary refresh rates while leaving budget for HDR performance, contrast, speakers, a better stand or a faster GPU. The extra 60Hz is unlikely to change most noncompetitive games.

Upgrading from 144Hz

Either choice is a substantial upgrade in motion cadence, but 240Hz generally delivers the stronger value. Confirm that your graphics card can exceed 200fps at 1440p before choosing 300Hz; otherwise the upgrade will be limited by rendering performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Competitive player with an older GPU

Buy 240Hz or retain your current display and improve frame-time consistency first. A 300Hz panel cannot compensate for a system that renders below its target, and lowering settings solely to chase a number may make the image less readable.

Common buying and setup mistakes

  • Buying by the maximum number alone: check measured transitions, VRR range and overshoot.
  • Confusing average FPS with usable FPS: inspect 1% lows and frame-time spikes in actual matches.
  • Leaving the monitor at 60Hz: verify the operating-system and in-game selections after connecting it.
  • Using an unsuitable cable or port: a bandwidth limit can silently prevent the advertised mode.
  • Running the most aggressive overdrive: inverse ghosting can make motion less clear than a slower setting.
  • Ignoring ergonomics and brightness: eye strain and poor posture reduce practical performance during long sessions.
  • Assuming catalogue availability is permanent: confirm regional stock, firmware, price and warranty before purchase.

The verdict

At 1440p, 240Hz is the sensible default: it delivers a 4.17ms refresh interval, strong competitive performance and broader value. A 300Hz display reduces that interval to 3.33ms, but the theoretical 0.83ms gain is only fully useful when the game and system deliver frames close to 300fps. Current controlled evidence demonstrates benefits through 240Hz, not a decisive 300Hz advantage. Buy 300Hz for a high-frame-rate competitive setup when the premium is small and the panel is well tuned; choose 240Hz for almost everyone else.
