120ft raises angel funding to build autonomous microfactories run by humanoid robots

Swedish startup 120ft Factory AB has emerged from stealth with a €576,000 angel round backed by 22 investors. The Stockholm company wants to place autonomous, humanoid-robot production lines inside three 40-foot shipping containers, then sell manufacturing capacity to brands by the finished product rather than by selling robots or factory equipment.

120ft launched on 15 October 2026. Its first intended customers are design-led consumer brands, particularly small-appliance and consumer-electronics makers that need low-volume, high-mix production closer to where products are sold.

What is 120ft Factory?

120ft Factory AB is a Swedish robotics and manufacturing startup founded in Stockholm in 2025 by Martin Willers. Its name comes from the proposed footprint of its factory: three 40-foot containers arranged as a compact production site. The company says the containers would house robots, tooling, inspection equipment and the software needed to run several customers’ jobs in the same facility.

The model is manufacturing as a service. A brand would keep its existing component suppliers, ship parts to a 120ft site and pay for each finished product. It would not need to purchase a robot fleet or build a dedicated assembly line. Shared equipment would switch between products and customers as demand changes.

How the humanoid-robot microfactories are supposed to work

  1. Parts arrive from the brand’s existing suppliers. 120ft’s proposal does not require a customer to replace its current component-sourcing network.
  2. Product information is converted into machine instructions. The company says its software reads product designs, bills of materials and quality requirements, then turns them into digital manufacturing instructions.
  3. The job is simulated before production. A virtual run is intended to expose missing information, collision risks and process bottlenecks before physical parts are consumed.
  4. Shared robots perform the work. The planned system covers preparation, final assembly, inspection and packing. The robots are described as humanoid, but 120ft has not identified a specific robot model.
  5. Orchestration software manages the line. During a run, software coordinates robots, tooling and quality checks, and directs a response when a task fails.
  6. Production data is retained. Instructions and results from each run are stored so a task can be reused and refined rather than taught from scratch for every order.

This combination matters because a robot alone is not a complete factory. Sam Baker of Planet A Ventures, one of the investors, said tooling, software and quality control have to work around the machines for automation to solve a manufacturing problem.

What 120ft demonstrated

120ft demonstrated its system on a lamp. In the reported demonstration, robots assembled a cylinder lock, threaded a bulb fitting and ran a functional test. That example shows the intended scope is more than a single pick-and-place motion: the company is targeting a sequence that includes mechanical assembly and a check that the finished product works.

The company also reports a sharp reduction in the time needed to teach an end-to-end assembly skill:

Why a small appliance or electronics brand might use a microfactory

Smaller brands often have to commit to production months before they know how much customers will buy. That can tie up working capital in inventory and force early decisions about product configuration. A shared, local site could let a company order smaller batches, change designs more quickly and produce nearer to demand without financing a complete automated line.

120ft also presents geographically concentrated supply chains as a risk. A network of compact sites could add capacity in more than one market while leaving component sourcing with the brand. The customer would be paying for output, not taking ownership of robots, tooling and the associated operating software.

The model is aimed at products with enough assembly complexity to benefit from automation but not enough volume to justify a dedicated factory. It is not yet evidence that every consumer product can be made economically in a container-sized site.

What remains unproven

120ft’s launch describes a proposed commercial system, not an operating production network. The announced material does not identify a production-site location, named customers, a specific robot model or independently measured throughput. It also does not establish unit economics, sustained quality levels, maximum product mix or the time required to reconfigure a line between customers.

Those details will determine whether the concept can move from a lamp demonstration to dependable contract manufacturing. The learning-speed claims are encouraging indicators of the company’s software and teaching approach, but they should not be read as proof that a full factory can produce at the same pace.

Roadmap beyond assembly

The immediate funding objective is to support commercial production and further development of the software and factory infrastructure. Longer term, 120ft says the same local-production model could handle repair, product upgrades and remanufacturing. That would extend the containers’ role beyond making new units and could help brands keep products in service longer, although no commercial repair or remanufacturing deployment has been announced.
