If Center Stage stopped working after you updated your iPad Pro, first check that your exact model is eligible, you’re using the front-facing camera in a compatible app, and Center Stage is enabled in that app’s controls. Apple’s cited documentation does not identify an iPadOS 26 bug that disables Center Stage, so the steps below are checks to isolate the cause—not guaranteed fixes for a confirmed update problem.
Check eligibility and controls first
Apple’s Center Stage requirements are specific: the iPad must be an eligible model, the app must support the feature, and the video must use the front-facing camera. A missing Center Stage control in one app does not by itself mean the camera is broken.

1. Confirm your iPad Pro generation
Open Settings > General > About and check the model information. Apple lists these iPad Pro models as supporting Center Stage: 11-inch (3rd generation or later) and 12.9-inch (5th generation or later). An iPad can support iPadOS 26 without meeting Center Stage’s separate model requirement. See Apple’s Center Stage requirements and the iPad User Guide’s model and version instructions.
2. Select the front-facing camera
Center Stage uses the front camera. If the video app is currently using the rear camera, switch to the front-facing camera before looking for the feature or testing its framing.

3. Check whether the app supports Center Stage
Apple requires a compatible app that supports Center Stage. If the control is missing in a particular video app, test in FaceTime if available. If Center Stage appears there but not in the other app, that points to app support or app-specific controls rather than proving an iPad camera fault.
4. Turn it on in Control Center
- Open the video app and start or join a video session.
- Swipe down from the iPad’s upper-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the controls for the active app. The label varies by app; in FaceTime, for example, it may appear as FaceTime Controls.
- Tap Center Stage to enable it.
Apple’s current instructions use the app’s controls in Control Center. Older instructions for iPadOS 17 or earlier refer to a Video Effects button, so that label may not match the current interface. See Apple’s current Center Stage instructions.

5. Check the control during a FaceTime call
In a FaceTime call, tap your self-view thumbnail, open Camera Effects, and tap Center Stage. This is an alternative route to the Control Center app controls.

6. Quit and reopen the affected video app
Close the app, reopen it, and test Center Stage in a fresh video session. This is a basic diagnostic step, not a fix Apple documents specifically for an iPadOS 26 Center Stage problem. If only one app is affected, its support or behavior is a more useful lead than assuming a universal hardware failure.

7. Restart the iPad
Restart the iPad, reopen the same compatible app, and check Center Stage again using the front camera. A restart is a general troubleshooting measure; Apple’s Center Stage guidance does not establish it as a specific remedy for this symptom.
8. Test the front-camera preview in another supported app
Open another app that supports Center Stage and check whether the front-camera video appears. Note the difference between a working camera preview with no automatic framing and a camera preview that fails altogether. The first calls for another check of app support and Center Stage controls; a camera failure in multiple apps is useful information to give support.

Check the software version and available updates
9. Verify the installed iPadOS version
Go to Settings > General > About and read the software version. This confirms what is installed rather than relying on when the update notification appeared. The iPad User Guide describes this general settings path.

Open Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an update is available for your iPad. Apple recommends backing up before downloading new software. An available update is worth checking, but its existence does not establish that it will fix Center Stage. See Apple’s iPadOS 26 download instructions.

11. Toggle Center Stage and retest
Using the app’s Control Center controls—or FaceTime’s Camera Effects control—turn Center Stage off and back on. Test in a well-lit view with the front camera unobstructed, so you can tell whether the camera is producing an image and whether the framing follows you. Lighting and an unobstructed view are practical test conditions, not established causes of an iPadOS 26 Center Stage fault.
12. Contact Apple Support if the front camera fails across apps
If the front-camera preview fails in more than one app that should support it, or remains unavailable after checking the settings and software, contact Apple Support for help assessing the device. Explain the iPad Pro model and generation, installed iPadOS version, apps tested, whether the front-camera preview works, and which checks you completed. Those details distinguish a Center Stage control or app issue from a broader camera problem; they do not, by themselves, establish that a repair is needed.
