Handle discs by the edge and center hole, put each one back in its case, and keep cases in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Clean only when needed, using gentle, straight strokes from the center toward the edge. These habits reduce avoidable damage, but they cannot guarantee how long a particular movie disc will remain playable.
How do I keep Blu-rays and DVDs from getting scratched?
1. Pick up discs by the edge and center hole
Hold a disc at its outer edge or through its center hole. This keeps fingerprints and skin oils off the reading surface and reduces the chance of dropping or scratching it. The National Archives recommends careful handling of optical media, including Blu-rays.

2. Keep fingers off the reading surface
When removing or returning a disc, avoid touching either flat side. Even if you do not see a mark, oils and residue can attract dust and may interfere with playback.
3. Avoid bending the disc
Do not flex a disc to release it from a case. Press the case’s center hub as designed, then lift the disc by the edge. Bending can stress the disc and make removal less controlled.

What is the safest way to store a disc collection?
4. Return every disc to its own case
Put the disc away after use rather than leaving it in a player, on a table, or exposed to dust. An individual case provides more physical protection than leaving a disc loose. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends standard jewel cases for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays, and notes that polypropylene cases offer greater durability.
5. Store cases upright
Keep cased discs upright on a shelf, as you would books. Avoid stacking loose discs directly on top of one another or storing them in sleeves that can offer little physical protection and may scratch or contaminate the surface. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises against paper or plastic sleeves for long-term storage.

6. Choose a cool, dry, stable location
Keep the collection away from radiators, hot appliances, direct sunlight, damp basements, and places with large temperature or humidity swings. The Canadian Conservation Institute gives a storage range of 20–50% relative humidity and temperatures from -10°C to 23°C for optical media. These are institutional conservation recommendations, not a requirement that every household install climate-control equipment. Its guidance also cautions against rapid environmental fluctuations: a stable, sensible room is preferable to repeated moves between very different conditions.

7. Keep food, drinks, and debris away
Do not handle discs over food or drinks, and keep the playback area clear of dust and loose debris. Particles on a disc or in playback equipment can cause problems that careful storage alone will not prevent.

How should I clean a Blu-ray or DVD?
8. Remove loose dust gently first
Do not clean a disc on a routine schedule if it looks clean. For loose dust, use a hand-operated air puffer gently before touching the surface. This reduces the chance that a particle will be dragged across the disc during wiping.
9. Wipe from the center straight out
For a visible fingerprint or deposit, use a soft, lint-free cloth and make straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge. Lift the cloth and repeat with a clean portion rather than rubbing back and forth. Never wipe in a circle: the National Archives explains that circumferential scratches can be more damaging than scratches that run radially from the center.

10. Avoid solvents, sprays, and abrasive fixes
Sony’s cleaning guidance says to use a soft, dry cloth and warns against benzine, thinner, commercially available disc or lens cleaners, and vinyl anti-static spray; it says liquid cleaners can damage disc contents. The National Archives says distilled or deionized water may be used if needed and the disc should then be dried completely. Since manufacturer guidance differs, dry wiping is the safer default; check the disc or player maker’s instructions before using any liquid. Do not use toothpaste, polishing compounds, abrasive pads, or circular buffing. The National Archives notes that its maintenance procedure cannot remedy deep scratches that affect readability.

11. Label the case and preserve unique data separately
Write on the case rather than attaching an adhesive label to the disc. Adhesive labels can affect a disc, and the National Archives limits its marking advice to a water-based felt-tip marker used in the clear inner hub if marking the disc is unavoidable. If a disc contains unique recorded data, keep another copy and periodically verify that it can still be read. The Library of Congress recommends backing up recorded data and checking readability; careful handling is not a substitute for a backup.

How long do Blu-rays and DVDs last?
There is no dependable universal lifespan figure for an individual pressed Blu-ray or DVD movie in the cited guidance. Longevity depends on factors that include materials, manufacturing quality, age, handling, and storage. The Library of Congress notes that optical-disc material composition is proprietary and may vary by brand; it also observes that, under good conditions, a physical disc may outlast the equipment and software needed to play it. That is a possibility, not a guarantee for any particular disc.
Figures reported for recordable formats such as BD-R, DVD-R, and CD-R should not be treated as a lifespan promise for commercial pressed movie discs. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s BD-R discussion and the NIST/Library of Congress longevity work concern recordable media, not every Blu-ray or DVD release. Small, occasional scratches are unlikely to affect readability, according to the National Archives, but a deep scratch that disrupts reading may not be repairable.
