11 Scams Targeting Authors Right Now—and How to Check an Offer

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authors are being approached with promises of film deals, publisher interest, book-club features, media appearances and marketing help that can turn into demands for money or personal information. David Atkinson’s October 1, 2026 roundup describes 11 patterns; it is a set of reported examples, not a measured ranking of how common each scam is. The safest response to an unexpected offer is to verify the person and organization independently before replying, paying or sharing details.

How to assess an unexpected offer

Look beyond the message’s polish. Tailored praise, a plausible-looking email address, a familiar organization’s name or an apparently personal introduction does not establish that the sender represents it. The Authors Guild warns that scammers can use realistic addresses and build trust before asking for money; Writer Beware has also reported AI-driven outreach and impersonations. See the Authors Guild’s February 24, 2026 alert and Writer Beware’s August 2026 report.

  • Who is supposedly contacting you? Identify the person, company, club, festival, library, publisher or association being invoked.
  • What is promised? Be cautious around claims of access to a major deal, adaptation, audience, reviews or media exposure.
  • When does the request change? Notice whether a friendly approach becomes a request for payment, personal information or a referral to another paid intermediary.
  • Can you verify the claim independently? Find the organization’s official website or contact channel yourself; do not rely on links or phone numbers supplied in the pitch.

Check each person in a referral chain separately. A supposed editor, public figure or author may lead to a supposed agent or marketer, and one verified identity does not authenticate the next. Writer Beware notes that fake publisher editors may route writers to fake or impersonated agents; literary agents advocate for authors rather than work for publishers. See its March 2026 report.

11 reported scams targeting authors

These patterns, described by David Atkinson, overlap: an impersonation can be paired with a book-club invitation or a marketing pitch, for example. The list is not a prevalence ranking.

1. The Netflix, Paramount or Universal “book committee”

A supposed producer says a book can be presented to a streaming or studio adaptation committee, then seeks substantial payment. Treat claimed access as something to verify, not proof that a company is considering the book. Contact the named organization through independently found official channels.

2. The book-club or book-festival feature

A purported representative praises the book and offers a feature, but the opportunity eventually requires a fee. The person may invoke a real club or festival without representing it. Ask the organization directly, using contact details found independently, whether the offer and representative are genuine.

3. The big-publisher or literary-agent reach-out

An unsolicited message claims a major publisher is interested, then may lead to a reading fee or another payment. Do not treat an impressive publisher’s name or a referral to an agent as confirmation. Verify the publisher and agent separately; Writer Beware has documented fake editor-to-agent referral chains.

4. The fake podcast, radio or TV invitation

A sender says a book has been selected for a show associated with a celebrity or famous host, but has no genuine connection and seeks money. In July 2026, the Authors Guild warned of a podcast invitation impersonating its staff and stated: “The Authors Guild does not have a podcast or offer podcast interviews.” Check invitations with the named organization’s real contact channel; see its July 2026 alert.

5. The library-feature offer

A purported library organization promises placement in reading events or similar programs. Confirm that the organization exists and that the named person actually works with it before providing materials, information or payment.

6. The famous-author impersonation

Someone posing as a well-known author builds a relationship, then refers the writer to a supposed marketing expert. Atkinson reports that both identities may be controlled by the same scammer. Verify the author’s identity and the marketer’s identity independently rather than relying on the introduction.

7. The unsolicited introduction to a publishing guru

A social-media commenter offers to connect an author with a publishing guru or marketing specialist, steering the writer toward paid services. An introduction is not an endorsement. Research the service provider, what is actually being offered, and whether the person making the referral has a genuine relationship with them.

8. The contest award you never entered

A congratulatory notice claims you won an award despite no entry, then offers paid add-ons such as a badge or trophy. Verify the contest and its records through the organizer’s official channel; do not pay to claim an unsolicited prize.

9. Paid visibility, reviews, trailers, marketing or website work

Unsolicited pitches may promise exposure, reviews, a cinematic trailer, marketing advice, organic traffic or a website review or build. The promised service may not exist. Before paying, establish who will do the work, exactly what will be delivered, and whether the organization and offer check out independently.

10. Social posts that collect author details

A post asks writers to share book covers, describe their books or name publishing problems. Responders may then receive direct-message sales pitches. Be selective about what you reveal publicly, and assess any follow-up as a separate unsolicited offer rather than a trusted recommendation.

11. Threats to flood a book with one-star Amazon reviews

A sender claims to have promoted the book and demands money under threat of a mass negative-review attack. Atkinson describes this as an extortion tactic and notes that the threat may be empty; do not assume either that the attacker can carry it out or that a platform will prevent it. Preserve the messages and report the threat through appropriate channels.

What to do if you receive a suspicious message

  1. Pause. Do not pay, share sensitive details or follow a referral just because the approach sounds personalized or urgent.
  2. Verify independently. Locate the real organization’s website and contact details yourself. Ask whether the sender, offer and requested payment are genuine. Verify every referred person separately.
  3. Keep evidence. Save the message, sender details, links, payment requests and follow-up communications. Avoid deleting material that may help the organization or authorities assess a report.
  4. Report the impersonation or threat. Contact the genuine organization using its official channel and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authorities. The Authors Guild invites reports of suspicious messages in its podcast-scam alert; reporting does not guarantee a particular enforcement outcome.

A historical enforcement example illustrates why reports matter without predicting what will happen in any individual case: in January 2025, the Authors Guild reported that three individuals behind PageTurner Press were arrested and indicted after an investigation involving an author who was told to send money before a major-publisher deal. An arrest and indictment are not a conviction. See the Guild’s January 2025 report.
