The best first lawn mower is the one that fits your yard and your ability to move it—not simply the model with the highest score. For a small, flat lawn, a push mower may be easier to steer and cheaper to own; for a larger yard or slopes, self-propulsion can save effort. The 11 models below are research-backed candidates, not a universal ranking or products we personally tested. Check the exact model number, battery-and-charger bundle, current price, warranty and local availability before buying.

Choose the mower type before the model

Start by estimating your lawn area, then factor in hills, trees, narrow turns, storage space, physical effort, maintenance tolerance and budget. Acreage guidance is only a starting point: thick grass, irregular boundaries, slopes and the operator’s strength can change what feels manageable.

Mower type When it may fit Trade-offs to consider
Push mower A smaller or medium-sized lawn, especially if it is relatively flat and the operator is comfortable supplying the forward force. Usually lighter and less complex than a self-propelled model, but the operator does all the pushing. Lowe’s describes push mowers as economical and useful on smaller or medium yards; Briggs & Stratton gives flat lawns under one-quarter acre as a typical fit. These are broad rules of thumb, not hard limits. Lowe’s mower guide; Briggs & Stratton mower guide.
Self-propelled mower A larger lawn, a slope, or a user who wants the mower to provide forward drive. It can reduce pushing effort but may add cost and weight. Front-wheel drive can help with turns around obstacles; Briggs & Stratton identifies rear-wheel drive as offering better traction on hills. Lowe’s suggests considering self-propulsion above about half an acre or on hilly ground, while Briggs & Stratton gives up to three-quarters of an acre as a typical fit. Terrain and user strength matter more than either cutoff alone. Lowe’s mower guide; Briggs & Stratton mower guide.
Battery-powered A buyer who wants to avoid gasoline handling and reduce routine engine maintenance. Match the battery capacity and claimed runtime to the lawn, and account for charging time, replacement or spare-battery cost, and compatibility with tools you already own. Battery voltage alone does not tell you how complete or economical a kit is. Lowe’s mower guide; Popular Mechanics’ electric mower guide.
Gas-powered A buyer who prefers fuel power and wants to keep mowing without waiting for a battery to recharge. Use the fuel specified by the manufacturer and plan for engine care, including oil, spark-plug and filter maintenance. Lowe’s mower guide.
Corded electric or manual reel A small, flat area where a cord’s reach or the extra effort of a reel mower will not be a problem. A cord restricts range. Reel mowers require more physical effort and can struggle with tall grass and weeds. Lowe’s mower guide.

For any type, compare deck width with the shape of the yard: a wider deck can cover open ground faster, while a narrower mower may be easier to thread between trees and tight passages. A model’s published coverage or runtime is useful only if it reflects the conditions and battery configuration you will actually use.

Popular Mechanics’ September 18, 2026 battery-mower guide offers a second, publication-specific perspective: it names the EGO Power+ 56V 21-inch Select Cut XP its best overall, Ryobi 40V HP 21-inch its best value, Greenworks 80V 22-inch self-propelled its gas-mower replacement, and Greenworks 40V 16-inch its choice for yards under 0.15 acres. These are that publication’s categories and findings, not a universal ranking. Its reviewed Ryobi configuration included two 6Ah batteries and was described as easy to operate; it described the Greenworks 80V as heavy to maneuver with self-propulsion disengaged. Check the guide’s exact model links and current stock notes before using those observations to choose a specific listing. Popular Mechanics’ electric mower guide.

How to narrow the shortlist

Choose push or self-propelled based on effort

Push models avoid a drive system and may be easier to steer around obstacles, but the user supplies the forward force. Self-propulsion can make hills and longer mowing sessions more manageable; it does not remove the need to steer, turn or manage the mower safely. Check drive-wheel layout where possible: front-wheel drive can suit frequent turns, while rear-wheel drive may offer better hill traction.

Check the whole battery kit, not just the mower

For a battery mower, compare the included battery capacity, number of batteries, charger, charge time and any published runtime or coverage claim. Also check the price of a compatible spare battery and whether your existing tools use the same battery platform. A bare tool, a single-battery kit and a multi-battery bundle are not equivalent purchases. Confirm that the exact model suffix on the listing matches the configuration you intend to buy.

Match controls and handling to the person mowing

Look for a starting method you are comfortable using, an accessible and understandable speed control, and height adjustment that does not require awkward effort. Deck width, mower weight, battery weight and the ability to fold or store the mower upright affect how manageable it is in a garage or shed. A model that is easy to start can still be tiring to lift, turn or store.

Decide how you want to handle clippings

Check whether the mower supports mulching, bagging, side discharge or leaf shredding, then confirm which parts are included and which are sold separately. A bagger or mulch plug may vary by trim or retailer bundle. Do not assume that a feature shown in a product family listing comes with the exact model you are considering.

Include ownership and service in the comparison

Compare purchase price with the cost of a complete battery kit, spare batteries, routine maintenance and likely service needs. Battery models still need deck cleaning and blade care; gas models also need the engine maintenance specified in their manuals. Warranty coverage and dealer or service access vary, so check the terms for the exact model and location.

Toro lists battery and gas walk-behind mowers in both push and self-propelled categories, while Husqvarna’s US catalog includes battery and gas models, including self-propelled choices. First-use safety and care

Before mowing

  • Read the operator’s manual for the exact mower model.
  • Wear eye protection, and mow in daylight when the grass is dry.
  • Clear toys, branches and other debris from the mowing area.
  • Keep children and pets away while operating the mower.
  • Keep all wheels on the ground and take particular care on slopes.

These precautions follow Briggs & Stratton’s mower guidance. Briggs & Stratton mower guide. For maintenance intervals and procedures, follow the operator’s manual: battery power does not eliminate deck and blade care, and gas engines require the specified routine service.
