11 Free Open-Source File Managers That Avoid GTK and Qt

If you want a graphical file manager without committing to GTK or Qt, start with the eleven free and open-source projects identified in the March 12, 2026 LinuxLinks roundup: Spacedrive, Xfe, muCommander, Cloud Commander, Sigma File Manager, far2l, Xplorer, trolCommander, TkDesk, System G and Worker. They are not interchangeable: the list spans distributed filesystems, dual-pane commanders, cloud-oriented tools, Git-aware managers and classic Amiga- or FAR-inspired interfaces.

The roundup defines the collection, but it does not provide a dependency audit for every project. Treat “non-GTK/non-Qt” as a selection criterion to verify against each project’s current documentation, package metadata and build files before installing. The guide below maps each project to its stated design, identifies the questions that matter for your workflow and gives a repeatable way to check toolkit, operating-system and maintenance claims.

What “non-GTK” and “non-Qt” really means

GTK and Qt are application toolkits: collections of widgets, windows, accessibility interfaces, graphics integration and platform adapters. A file manager can use a different primary toolkit yet still depend on GTK or Qt through a plugin, helper, desktop-integration package or optional component. Conversely, a project can describe itself with a toolkit name without documenting every runtime dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, the LinuxLinks roundup is best read as a curated starting list rather than a formal certification. Before choosing one, inspect the current upstream requirements for your operating system, look at the package dependency list, and check whether optional features pull in a toolkit you are trying to avoid. The project page and release artifacts are the authority for current capabilities; the roundup is the authority for which eleven products this article covers.

The eleven projects at a glance

File manager How the roundup positions it What is established Questions to verify before adoption
Spacedrive Virtual distributed filesystem The roundup uses this description; no per-project toolkit audit is supplied. Which locations it can index, whether data stays local, supported systems, and current dependencies.
Xfe Explorer- or Commander-like X file manager Presented as a familiar X-based file-management alternative. Current platform packages, pane and tab behavior, remote protocols, archive handling and toolkit dependencies.
muCommander Dual-pane file manager Its official page documents broad local, network and archive support, Java 11 or later, GPLv3 licensing and version 1.6.2 dated May 14, 2026. Whether a newer build is available, Java packaging for your system, and which protocols you actually need.
Cloud Commander Cloud file manager with console and editor The roundup identifies the cloud, terminal and editing focus. Supported cloud back ends, authentication model, local-versus-remote behavior and current runtime requirements.
Sigma File Manager Evolving modern manager “Evolving” is the roundup’s description, not a release-frequency guarantee. Current release cadence, stability of settings and plugins, search and preview depth, and toolkit usage.
far2l Linux fork of FAR Manager v2 The project is identified through its Linux/FAR lineage. Linux distribution coverage, keyboard mappings, terminal integration, remote features and build dependencies.
Xplorer TypeScript file explorer The roundup describes its implementation orientation. Desktop runtime, supported operating systems, packaging, filesystem permissions and extension model.
trolCommander muCommander fork Its identity is tied to a fork of muCommander. How it differs from upstream, release activity, compatibility with muCommander configurations and Java requirements.
TkDesk Tcl/Tk-based file manager Tcl/Tk is explicitly named in the roundup. Current Tcl/Tk versions, platform packages and whether any optional component introduces GTK or Qt.
System G Git-supporting file manager Git integration is the distinguishing descriptor. Which Git operations are exposed, repository status behavior, conflict workflows and supported filesystems.
Worker Amiga DirOpus-style manager The roundup highlights its classic Amiga-inspired model. Current platform support, keyboard and button-bar customization, scripting, remote access and dependencies.

“Not stated” in this table means the supplied roundup does not establish the fact. It is not evidence that a feature is absent.

Profiles: what each manager is trying to do

Spacedrive: a distributed-filesystem model

Spacedrive is described as a virtual distributed filesystem. That framing is different from a conventional folder browser: the central question is how several storage locations are represented as one navigable space. It is worth considering when your problem is finding and organizing files across locations rather than merely opening a directory on one disk.

Ask three questions before relying on it: what it indexes, where metadata is stored, and how it behaves when a location is offline. Verify whether “distributed” refers to a local catalog, synchronized data, or another model, and confirm that the current build for your operating system still avoids the toolkits you are excluding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xfe: a conventional Explorer/Commander alternative

Xfe is positioned as an Explorer- or Commander-like X file manager. That makes it a candidate for readers who want a recognizable graphical browser without adopting a radically different storage model. The description alone does not establish tabs, dual panes, network protocols or archive support, so those should be checked in current documentation rather than assumed from the name.

During evaluation, test ordinary operations first: opening two directories, copying a large folder, handling hidden files, changing permissions and recovering from an interrupted transfer. Then inspect package dependencies to confirm that the “X” presentation does not conceal a GTK or Qt requirement.

muCommander: the most completely documented cross-platform option in this list

muCommander is the list’s established dual-pane example. Its official site lists support for FTP, SFTP, SMB, NFS, HTTP, Amazon S3 and Hadoop HDFS, along with archive browsing, batch renaming, tabs and checksums. It requires Java 11 or later, is licensed under the GNU GPL v3 and lists version 1.6.2 dated May 14, 2026.

Those protocol and archive claims make muCommander a strong first candidate when one interface must cover local disks and several remote systems. Java is a real operational requirement: check that your distribution supplies a compatible Java 11-or-newer runtime and decide whether you want a system-wide or bundled runtime. The dated version is a point-in-time listing, so check the official page for a later release before deployment.

Cloud Commander: cloud, console and editor in one workspace

Cloud Commander is described as a cloud file manager that includes a console and an editor. That combination targets users who move between file operations and command-line or text-editing tasks without opening separate applications.

Do not infer a particular provider, protocol or authentication flow from the word “cloud.” Confirm which back ends are supported, whether credentials are stored locally, how transfers are resumed and whether the editor handles files on a remote mount directly. For sensitive environments, review the project’s current security and permission documentation before connecting production data.

Sigma File Manager: an evolving modern project

The roundup calls Sigma File Manager an evolving modern manager. “Evolving” can be useful if you value active design changes, but it is not a promise of stability or a measured maintenance rate. Look at recent release notes, open issues and migration guidance before making it the default on several machines.

Evaluate the features that determine daily friction: search scope, preview behavior, keyboard shortcuts, bulk operations, undo or recovery, and how settings are backed up. Record the exact version you tested, because an evolving interface can change labels and defaults between releases.

far2l: Linux software with FAR Manager v2 heritage

far2l is identified as a Linux fork of FAR Manager v2. That lineage signals a command-oriented, keyboard-friendly style rather than a purely mouse-driven folder browser. It can appeal to users who already think in panels, function keys and explicit file operations.

Check which Linux distributions provide packages, whether the fork tracks upstream behavior or deliberately diverges, and how it handles terminals, permissions and remote filesystems. If you work outside Linux, verify support instead of assuming that the “Linux fork” label implies a portable build.

Xplorer: a TypeScript file explorer

Xplorer is described as a TypeScript file explorer. The implementation language matters because it may determine the desktop runtime, packaging format and integration with native filesystem APIs, but the descriptor does not by itself establish any operating-system list or feature set.

Before choosing it, identify the runtime used by the current release, confirm how installers handle updates, and test permission errors, removable drives and very large directories. Also check whether extensions or previews introduce additional toolkit dependencies.

trolCommander: a forked path from muCommander

trolCommander is presented as a muCommander fork. A fork can preserve a familiar dual-pane concept while changing maintenance priorities, patches or packaging. The important comparison is therefore not the name but the divergence: which fixes have been carried over, which features differ and whether configuration files remain compatible.

Read the fork’s release notes and issue tracker, then perform the same protocol, archive and batch-rename tests you would run on muCommander. Verify its runtime requirements independently; a fork may change them even when the interface looks similar.

TkDesk: Tcl/Tk-based, with a toolkit caveat

TkDesk is the entry whose descriptor explicitly names Tcl/Tk. That is useful evidence about its primary interface technology, but it is not proof that every build and optional component excludes GTK and Qt. The current dependency list still matters.

TkDesk is most compelling when you specifically want a Tcl/Tk-era workflow or need a lightweight interface that fits existing Tcl tooling. Check the Tcl/Tk version expected by the project, available packages for your platform and behavior on high-DPI displays. Test Unicode filenames, drag-and-drop and network mounts before making it your daily manager.

System G: choose it for repository-aware work

System G is described as a file manager with Git support. That makes repository status and file navigation the deciding criteria, not a generic feature count. Confirm whether the Git integration is read-only status display, staging and committing, branch operations, diff viewing or a broader workflow.

  • 【What You Get】16 GB USB Flash Drive Thumb Drive, The default format of the usb storage flash drive is FAT32.

Use a disposable repository for evaluation. Test modified, untracked, renamed and ignored files, then verify how the manager reacts to an external commit or a merge conflict. Keep ordinary filesystem tasks in the same test so Git features do not obscure copying, searching and permission behavior.

Worker: an Amiga DirOpus-style approach

Worker is positioned as an Amiga DirOpus-style manager. Readers who prefer explicit operations, configurable controls and a classic file-commander mental model may find that approach more efficient than a single-pane browser.

Because the descriptor is stylistic, verify the concrete details that affect modern use: current platform builds, keyboard customization, button bars, scripting, remote locations, archives and handling of long paths. Spend time learning its command model before judging speed; unfamiliar classic interfaces often have a steeper first hour and a faster routine afterward.

How to choose by workflow instead of by a universal ranking

Your priority Start with Why What to confirm
Many storage locations represented together Spacedrive Its stated concept is a virtual distributed filesystem. Indexing scope, offline behavior and data model.
Familiar Explorer- or Commander-like browsing Xfe That is the roundup’s defining description. Pane, tab, search and remote capabilities.
Broad remote-protocol and archive coverage muCommander The official page lists FTP, SFTP, SMB, NFS, HTTP, Amazon S3, Hadoop HDFS and archives. Java 11-or-newer availability and current release.
Cloud operations plus terminal and editing Cloud Commander Its stated focus combines those three activities. Back ends, authentication and security controls.
Keyboard-first, classic command workflows far2l or Worker One follows FAR Manager v2; the other follows an Amiga DirOpus style. Keymap, scripting, terminal and remote support.
Git-centered navigation System G Git support is its distinguishing descriptor. Exact repository operations and conflict handling.
Tcl/Tk specifically TkDesk The roundup explicitly identifies it as Tcl/Tk-based. Complete dependency graph and modern display behavior.
A project whose design is still changing Sigma File Manager The roundup calls it evolving and modern. Release cadence, stability and migration notes.
TypeScript-based implementation Xplorer Its implementation orientation is the identifying fact supplied. Runtime, packaging and native filesystem integration.
A muCommander-derived alternative trolCommander It is described as a muCommander fork. Fork-specific changes and release activity.

Capability benchmarks from current project pages

The eleven descriptions do not establish a common feature matrix. A few current project pages illustrate the dimensions you should compare, without turning those projects into a ranking of the eleven.

Remote systems and unusual filesystems

Newt describes a two-pane interface for local and remote machines, including SSH sessions, containers, Kubernetes, WSL, S3 and SFTP mounts. It also says archives and disc images can be browsed as filesystems. Those claims show why “remote support” should be broken into protocols, environments and image formats rather than recorded as a single yes/no column.

Search, previews and Git

Waydir describes keyboard-first dual-pane navigation on Linux, Windows and macOS, with tabs, SMB and SFTP drives, live recursive search, previews, archive browsing and Git integration. When comparing the eleven, ask whether search is live or manual, whether results can be acted on in place, and whether previews work locally and remotely.

Tags and portable organization

TagSpaces Lite takes a different approach: tags, notes, search, previews and offline use across Windows, macOS and Linux. Its page identifies the Lite edition as free and AGPL-3.0 licensed and documents portable mode from a USB stick on Windows and Linux. That portable mode is an optional accessory for readers who want to carry an organizer; it is not a requirement or a claim about portability for the eleven managers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical verification process before you commit

  1. Write down your exclusion. Decide whether you mean no GTK or Qt in the main interface, no runtime dependency at all, or no installation of either toolkit on the host. Those are different requirements.
  2. Check the current upstream requirements. Read the project’s installation and build documentation for the exact version you plan to use. Record the operating systems and architectures explicitly named there.
  3. Inspect package metadata. For a distribution package, review required and optional dependencies. For an archive or portable build, inspect bundled libraries and launch scripts.
  4. Separate core and optional features. A previewer, thumbnailer, terminal pane or cloud connector may have different dependencies from the main browser. Decide which features you will enable.
  5. Check maintenance signals. Note the latest release date, open issues, supported runtime versions and whether security fixes are documented. Do not treat a project’s descriptive label as a maintenance guarantee.
  6. Test your real storage. Use a local disk, a removable drive, a network share if relevant, and a directory containing hidden files, Unicode names, symlinks and large files. Use copies of data for destructive tests.
  7. Test recovery. Interrupt a copy, remove a destination temporarily, deny a permission and close the application during a noncritical operation. Record whether the manager reports the failure clearly and leaves files in a predictable state.
  8. Record versions and settings. Save the application version, runtime version, enabled plugins and dependency list. This makes a later toolkit or behavior change detectable.

Common selection mistakes

  • Assuming the roundup is a dependency certification. It establishes the eleven-project scope, not a complete audit of every build.
  • Choosing by interface screenshot alone. A familiar layout says little about remote protocols, archive handling, search semantics or recovery behavior.
  • Ignoring the runtime. muCommander, for example, requires Java 11 or later; a project’s language or packaging choice can be as important as its visible interface.
  • Confusing a fork with an identical product. trolCommander may share ancestry with muCommander while differing in fixes, features and release schedule.
  • Overlooking optional components. Previewers, cloud connectors and terminal integrations can alter dependencies and security exposure.
  • Testing only harmless folders. Permissions, interrupted transfers, network latency and unusual filenames reveal problems that a small home directory will not.
  • Expecting one manager to optimize every job. A distributed catalog, Git workspace, cloud console and classic two-pane commander solve different problems; selecting by workflow is more reliable than selecting by a generic “best” label.

Bottom line

The eleven free, open-source choices are best understood as distinct approaches rather than a ranked chart. Start with the project whose stated model matches your work: Spacedrive for a distributed-filesystem concept, Xfe for a conventional X-style browser, muCommander for documented protocol breadth, Cloud Commander for cloud-plus-console tasks, far2l or Worker for classic command workflows, System G for Git-aware navigation, and the remaining entries when their specific design or lineage fits your requirements. Then verify the current dependency graph, operating-system support and release health yourself. That final check is essential because the roundup’s scope is curated, while toolkit and feature details can change from one build to the next.
