1080p vs 1440p Gaming Monitors for GTA 6: Which Resolution Should You Buy?

For most buyers, a 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor is the better long-term choice for a mixed console, PC and desktop setup. Pick 1080p if keeping the price low, using a smaller screen, or reducing the load on an older graphics card matters more than desktop sharpness.

That recommendation is about the monitor, not a promise about Grand Theft Auto VI’s output. Rockstar has not published the game’s final resolution or frame-rate modes, so neither resolution can be described as a confirmed GTA VI setting.

What is actually confirmed about GTA VI

Rockstar’s customer-support listing identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. It does not specify a resolution target, frame-rate target, performance mode, quality mode, upscaling method or ray-tracing setting.

Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement gives the launch date as November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a standard price of $79.99. That announcement also does not define the video modes available on either console.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

A September 28, 2026 technical fact-check noted that Rockstar still had not published those specifications. Reports that interpret pre-release footage as approximately 1440p at 30 frames per second are analysis of footage, not a retail specification. The final game could use different internal resolutions, dynamic scaling, reconstruction or selectable modes.

Consequently, a monitor purchase should be based on the screen’s broader uses and its connection features. Do not pay a premium because a listing promises that GTA VI will run at native 1440p, 60fps or any other unannounced mode.

1080p and 1440p in practical terms

1080p means 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, while 1440p normally means 2,560 by 1,440 pixels. 1440p contains about 78 percent more pixels than 1080p. That extra information produces finer text, cleaner distant detail and less obvious stair-stepping at the same physical screen size, but it also asks a PC graphics card to render substantially more pixels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Image detail and viewing distance

At 24 inches, 1080p is a common, comfortable match for a desk viewed from a normal sitting distance. At 27 inches, 1080p looks less dense: menus and text are usable, but fine edges can appear softer. A 27-inch 1440p panel provides a visibly sharper desktop and a more detailed game image without requiring the scaling compromises often used on very high-resolution displays.

Screen size and distance matter more than the label alone. A 1080p display viewed from farther away can look perfectly acceptable, while a 1440p screen viewed extremely close may still reveal game-engine aliasing. Resolution cannot fix an image that is limited by a game’s rendering or reconstruction method.

Rendering load on a PC

At identical settings, 1440p requires the GPU to shade more pixels than 1080p. Frame rates therefore tend to be lower at 1440p on the same hardware. The exact difference depends on the game engine, graphics settings, upscaling and graphics card; there is no honest single percentage that applies to every PC.

  • Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

If your current PC already struggles at 1080p, choosing 1440p can force lower settings or an upscaler. If you expect to replace the GPU later, 1440p gives the upgraded system more room to show its advantage. A console’s fixed hardware is a different case because the developer controls the rendering modes.

1080p vs 1440p for this purchase

Decision axis 1080p 1440p
Image detail Lower pixel density; strongest fit for smaller screens and ordinary viewing distances Sharper image and text, especially around 27 inches
PC rendering load Lower load and easier for modest or older GPUs Higher load; more GPU headroom is useful
Typical cost position Usually the budget tier Usually costs more, with a stronger long-term desktop and PC experience
Console use Simple budget display when a 1080p signal is used More detail when a console or game outputs above 1080p or scaling is handled well
Upgrade flexibility Can become limiting after a PC upgrade or larger-screen move Better fit for a mixed PC-and-console setup
GTA VI certainty No confirmed GTA VI output mode No confirmed GTA VI output mode; do not buy on an unverified promise

The table’s console wording is deliberately conditional. A 1440p monitor does not force a console game to render at 1440p, and a 1080p monitor does not reveal which internal resolution the game used before output scaling.

Is 1440p worth it on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S?

It can be, particularly if the same display will also be used for PC games, browsing and work. A 27-inch 1440p panel gives menus, subtitles and desktop text more definition than a 27-inch 1080p panel. It also leaves you with a display that is less likely to feel restrictive after a future PC upgrade.

For a console-only setup, check the console’s supported output choices and the monitor’s HDMI behavior before buying. Look for a monitor that accepts the signal formats your console can produce, reports the correct refresh rate, and supports variable refresh rate (VRR) where applicable. A panel’s advertised maximum refresh rate is not proof that every HDMI input supports that rate at the desired resolution.

HDMI and input checks

  • Read the monitor’s manual or specification sheet for the maximum resolution and refresh rate on each HDMI port, not just on DisplayPort.
  • Confirm whether VRR is supported over HDMI and whether it works with the console you own.
  • Check for any console-specific compatibility note, but treat a phrase such as “ready for” as a starting point rather than a guarantee of every mode.
  • Make sure the monitor has an audio path you can use, such as a headphone output or speakers, if your setup does not route sound elsewhere.

These checks matter more than buying the highest number printed beside “Hz.” A 1440p display with reliable HDMI, VRR and warranty support is generally a better console purchase than a faster-looking model whose useful features are limited to DisplayPort.

Do you need a 120Hz monitor for GTA VI?

No confirmed requirement exists. Rockstar has not announced whether GTA VI will offer a 120Hz, 60Hz or 30Hz mode on either listed console. Buying a 120Hz or faster monitor is therefore a choice for headroom and other games, not a guaranteed GTA VI benefit.

ASUS ROG XG27ACS 27 Inch 1440p 180Hz USB-C G-SYNC HDR Gaming Monitor | DisplayHDR 400, sRGB 133%, 1ms (GTG), Fast IPS, ELMB Sync, AI Gaming, Free Sync, for PS5 and Xbox
  • 27-inch 2560 x 1440 HDR gaming monitor with ultrafast 180Hz refresh rate designed for professional gamers and immersive gameplay
  • ASUS Fast IPS technology enables a 1ms response time (GTG) for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates
  • ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB SYNC) technology enables ELMB together with variable refresh rate, eliminating ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates.
  • DisplayWidget Center enables easy OSD access and monitor settings adjustments with a mouse.
  • USB Type-C hub supports video transmission in DisplayPort signal; can serve as a USB hub, meaning that you can connect your device to your wired peripherals with clutter-free set-up

Higher refresh can still be worthwhile. It reduces the time between possible frame updates in games that actually render at higher frame rates, and it gives a PC more room for competitive or well-optimized titles. It does not turn a 30fps game into a 120fps game, and it cannot create frames that the console or game does not deliver.

When comparing two otherwise similar monitors, treat refresh rate as one line in the specification. Check response behavior, VRR range, HDMI bandwidth, image quality, stand adjustment and warranty at the same time. A lower-rated panel with consistent motion and proper console support may be preferable to a headline 180Hz number that you can use only through a different input.

How to choose based on your situation

Choose 1080p when the budget is strict

1080p remains sensible when the display must cost as little as possible, when you are replacing a small 22-to-24-inch monitor, or when spending on the monitor would take money away from the console, storage or other essential hardware. It is also the safer resolution for an older PC whose graphics card already needs reduced settings at 1080p.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this route, prioritize a reputable panel, low input lag, a usable HDMI implementation and VRR support over an extreme refresh-rate claim. A basic 1080p monitor can be a good GTA VI screen if it accepts the console signal reliably and suits your seating distance.

Choose 1440p for a general-purpose 27-inch screen

1440p is the stronger default when the monitor will sit on a desk and serve several roles: console gaming, PC gaming, web use, documents and media. The additional pixel density is visible every day, not only in one game. It also avoids making a future PC upgrade feel bottlenecked by a screen chosen solely for today’s hardware.

Do not assume that a more expensive 1440p panel automatically has better motion handling or console compatibility. Compare the ports and documented modes directly. A 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor with 180Hz refresh, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 is an example of the feature mix available in this category. Such refresh headroom is useful in other games even though GTA VI’s retail frame rate remains unannounced.

Choose according to your desk and viewing distance

Measure the space before deciding. A 27-inch screen needs more desk depth and may encourage you to sit closer than a 24-inch model. If you sit several feet away, screen size and brightness may matter more than the difference between these two resolutions. If the display will also replace a work monitor, 1440p’s text clarity usually carries more value than it does on a television viewed from across a room.

Choose 1440p when you expect a stronger PC later

If a graphics-card upgrade is likely during the monitor’s life, 1440p is a way to avoid replacing the display at the same time. You can run a demanding game at a lower internal resolution or with an upscaler temporarily, then use the monitor’s full resolution as hardware improves. That flexibility is a practical advantage, not a promise about GTA VI’s eventual PC availability or settings.

Features to prioritize over the resolution label

VRR and a useful operating range

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with changing frame delivery, reducing tearing and unevenness when frame rates fluctuate. Check the documented VRR range and the input on which it works. “Adaptive Sync” on a DisplayPort specification may not describe the same behavior over a console’s HDMI connection.

Input lag and response consistency

Look for independent measurements when available, but do not confuse a panel’s stated pixel response time with total input lag. Aggressive overdrive settings can create bright trails or inverse ghosting. A monitor that offers several response modes lets you choose a clean setting rather than forcing the fastest, most artifact-prone option.

HDMI implementation

For PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, HDMI is the connection that matters. Verify the resolution and refresh combinations supported by every HDMI port, whether the port supports VRR, and whether enabling high-bandwidth features disables another function. Use a certified cable appropriate to the mode you intend to run, and test the connection after changing the console’s video settings.

Panel, HDR and local dimming

Panel type affects contrast, viewing angles, motion behavior and black levels. HDR labels vary widely, so read the brightness and dimming details instead of treating “HDR” as a quality guarantee. Mini-LED models can provide stronger contrast through local dimming, but blooming and viewing-angle behavior still vary by implementation. These characteristics influence dark driving scenes more directly than a resolution badge does.

Ergonomics and warranty

Height, tilt, swivel and a VESA mount can determine whether a large monitor is comfortable for long sessions. Check the dead-pixel policy, warranty duration, return period and regional service terms. Prices and stock change, so compare the policy attached to the specific listing you are buying rather than relying on an old review.

Setup steps for a new monitor

  1. Connect the console or PC to the monitor’s appropriate HDMI or DisplayPort input. Use the port documented for the resolution and refresh rate you want.
  2. Open the monitor’s on-screen display and select the correct input. Enable the documented gaming, VRR or Adaptive Sync option only after confirming that your source supports it.
  3. On the console, open the video-output settings and select automatic detection first. Confirm the reported resolution, refresh rate and VRR status on the information screen.
  4. On a PC, select 1,920×1,080 or 2,560×1,440 in the operating system, then set the desired refresh rate in the advanced display settings. Update the graphics driver if the option is missing.
  5. Run a game with a known frame-rate range and watch for flicker, black screens, repeated signal drops or visible tearing. If problems appear, try another HDMI port or cable, disable one optional feature, and retest before changing several settings at once.
  6. Adjust brightness for the room and choose the least aggressive overdrive mode that keeps motion clean. Save separate monitor presets if you switch between console and PC.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming a pre-release video is a specification: footage analysis can estimate resolution or frame rate, but only the developer’s final documentation or the shipped game’s menus establish a retail mode.
  • Buying by refresh rate alone: confirm which input supports the advertised rate and whether the console can use it.
  • Ignoring scaling: a 1440p monitor may display a lower-resolution signal through scaling. Check for a sharp, correctly proportioned image and disable unnecessary post-processing if it adds blur.
  • Underestimating PC requirements: moving from 1080p to 1440p increases rendering demand. Plan to lower settings or use an appropriate upscaler if your GPU cannot maintain the frame rate you want.
  • Choosing a screen that is too large for the desk: measure viewing distance and stand depth; a theoretically sharper monitor is not an ergonomic improvement if you sit uncomfortably close.
  • Forgetting audio: many gaming monitors have limited or no built-in speakers. Confirm how sound will reach headphones, speakers or an amplifier.

Bottom-line buying decisions

Buy 1080p if all of these sound like you

  • You want the lowest reasonable monitor cost.
  • Your screen will be relatively small or viewed from a distance.
  • Your current PC has limited graphics headroom.
  • You do not expect to add a stronger PC or use the monitor heavily for text and productivity.

Buy 1440p if these priorities fit better

  • You want one 27-inch display for console, PC and desktop work.
  • Sharper text and game detail matter every day.
  • You can accept higher PC rendering demand or plan a future GPU upgrade.
  • You want more flexibility as your other games and hardware change.

In either case, select the model whose HDMI support, VRR behavior, ergonomics and warranty match your equipment. GTA VI’s final output modes are still unannounced, so those tangible characteristics are a safer basis for the purchase than a retailer’s prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Rockstar confirmed a native 1440p mode for GTA VI?

No. Rockstar has listed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and announced the November 19, 2026 launch, but it has not published final resolution or frame-rate modes. Approximate 1440p readings from pre-release footage are analysis, not a guaranteed retail setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a 1440p monitor make GTA VI look better than a 1080p monitor?

Only if the console and game provide a signal or scaling path that benefits from the monitor’s additional pixels. The monitor cannot increase the game’s internal resolution, but 1440p generally gives a sharper 27-inch desktop and can display higher-resolution output when available.

What should matter more than 180Hz for a GTA VI monitor?

Verify HDMI resolution and refresh support, VRR compatibility, response behavior, input lag, panel quality and warranty. GTA VI’s retail frame rate has not been announced, so a high refresh number alone is not evidence of a specific in-game benefit.
