100 Rogues Beginner Tips: How to Survive Your First Runs

To survive your first runs in 100 Rogues, treat every turn as a tactical decision rather than a routine step. Keep dangerous enemies at the distance your class prefers, use thrown items before you are cornered, and choose equipment for the encounter in front of you instead of saving everything for a hypothetical emergency. Learn one class’s tools at a time, use cover against ranged enemies, and accept that a single bad position can end an otherwise promising run.

The Steam release arrived on October 9, 2026, includes a PC demo, and is a single-player traditional roguelike with procedural dungeons, modified items, four classes and more than 50 unique monsters. A successful run is described by the developer as taking about an hour, although that is an approximate description rather than a measured average.

What makes a first run difficult

100 Rogues combines turn-based roguelike movement with class abilities and RPG-style skill progression. The dungeon layout, item properties and enemy situations change from run to run, so memorizing a single route will not carry you through every attempt. Your reliable advantage is making better decisions with the information currently visible.

The official game description emphasizes random dungeon maps, procedural item modifications and class-specific ability styles. That combination creates two kinds of uncertainty: you do not know exactly what the next room contains, and you may not know how a newly found item will fit your developing character. More than 50 unique monsters are listed for the Steam version, which makes recognizing threats more valuable than trying to memorize a universal sequence of attacks.

Normal difficulty is intentionally severe. Developer commentary describes a single mistake or unfavorable enemy placement as capable of ending a strong run. That is not a promise that every death is unavoidable; it means positioning, inventory decisions and retreat timing matter before combat becomes desperate.

Set up your first attempt for learning

Choose a difficulty that lets you observe the game

Easy Mode changes starting statistics and regeneration and reduces the functional enemy spawners in the second boss fight. The developer still describes it as punishing for players who are learning the strategy and skill systems. Use it when you want more room to identify enemy patterns, test item effects or understand a class tree without treating the mode as a shortcut to mastery.

Normal Mode is appropriate when you already understand the basic controls and want the intended level of pressure. Do not switch to Normal merely because an Easy run feels comfortable; switch when you can explain why you died and what decision you would change. There is no published beginner completion rate or win-rate that would justify a precise number of attempts for either mode.

Make item access part of your control setup

The developer’s difficulty discussion identifies quick slots and a dedicated thrown-item slot as ways to make frequent item use practical. Before entering a dangerous area, place the consumables you expect to use into the available quick-access positions and confirm how to select them. Exact key labels can change with updates or control schemes, so follow the bindings shown in your current game.

The goal is not faster menu navigation for its own sake. If using an item requires opening several screens while an enemy is adjacent, you are likely to postpone the decision until it is too late. A visible, reachable slot turns a potion, bomb or other throwable into an option you can evaluate every turn.

Begin with a narrow learning objective

Do not try to master every class, weapon interaction and secret route in one attempt. Give the first run a question you can answer, such as whether a class can disengage reliably, how much space an archer needs to threaten you, or which item effects are worth throwing immediately. A run that ends early can still teach you something useful if you know what you were testing.

Which class is best for beginners?

There is no official beginner tier list and no source establishes one universally best class. The four classes encourage different engagement distances and different ways of handling pressure. Choose the one whose decisions you want to practice, then stay with it long enough to recognize its strengths and failure points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Class Officially described emphasis What a beginner can practice What to watch for
Crusader Buffs and debuffs Changing the value of an encounter before committing to an attack; deciding when a status effect is worth a turn. Supportive effects do not replace positioning. A buff used after you are surrounded may not create enough space to recover.
Wizard High-damage spells Managing distance, line of attack and resource timing so a spell solves the current threat. Large damage numbers do not make standing in the open safe. A spell reserved too long may never be cast before an enemy reaches you.
Scoundrel Potential for extra turns Planning sequences in which movement, attacks and item use create tempo rather than trading one action for one action. Extra-turn potential is strongest when you have an exit route. Do not spend your mobility simply to enter a position you cannot leave.
Bruiser A transformation ability Recognizing when a state change is worth using and how it alters the next few turns. A transformation is a timing tool, not permission to ignore enemy composition or terrain.

The store description also illustrates cross-tree flexibility. A Wizard can use a dagger while specializing in melee abilities, and a Scoundrel can combine Marksman with Quick Step to hold off multiple melee attackers. These are examples of possible synergies, not a complete build guide or proof that either combination is optimal in every version.

How to pick a first class

  • Pick the Wizard if learning to control distance and spend high-impact abilities sounds appealing.
  • Pick the Crusader if you prefer changing the terms of a fight with buffs and debuffs.
  • Pick the Scoundrel if you want to study action economy, movement and escape timing.
  • Pick the Bruiser if you would rather learn around a dramatic transformation and close-range decision making.

Those descriptions are learning preferences, not rankings. If a class repeatedly leaves you unsure what to do on your turn, try another class for a run or two and compare the decisions, not just how far you reached.

Use a turn-by-turn combat routine

Read the room before moving

At the start of a fight, identify every visible enemy, the squares that provide cover, the direction you can retreat and the item or ability that changes the encounter most. Moving toward the nearest target is often the least informative choice. Ask whether the move opens a second line of attack, blocks your escape or brings you into another enemy’s range.

Because turns are discrete, you can pause to compare outcomes. If one step forward allows two enemies to attack while one step sideways preserves cover, the sideways move may be correct even when it deals no immediate damage. A low-damage turn that improves the next three turns is often safer than a large hit that leaves you surrounded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a retreat square available

Before entering melee range, identify at least one square you can reach without crossing another threat. If every adjacent square is dangerous, you are not merely attacking an enemy; you are accepting a possible lock-in. This matters especially against enemies that punish close contact or can prevent you from resetting the fight.

Use corners, walls and other terrain to limit the number of enemies that can attack at once. When no cover exists, spend a turn creating distance or disabling a threat instead of assuming that a direct exchange is safe.

Separate enemies instead of accelerating the fight

Several weak enemies can become more dangerous than one strong enemy when they occupy the same approach. Move so that only part of a group can reach you, then remove or disable the front threat. A thrown item that changes the shape of the group may be worth more than a direct attack on the nearest target.

End your turn with the next enemy action in mind

Do not evaluate a move only by the damage it causes now. Consider what each enemy can do after your turn: advance, surround, shoot, stun or force you into an unfavorable square. If the answer is unclear, choose a defensive action, create distance or spend an item that buys information and space.

How to use items in 100 Rogues

Throw items proactively

The developer explicitly advises throwing items frequently regardless of class and identifies equipment management as central to survival. Treat a throwable as part of your combat rotation, not as a museum piece you protect until the final floor. Use it when the effect changes the immediate tactical situation: breaking up a group, finishing a dangerous enemy, creating room or preventing a second attack.

This does not mean throwing every item as soon as you find it. It means evaluating the item’s present value and the likely value of carrying it forward. A weak item that solves the current threat can be better than a powerful item you lose while waiting for a perfect occasion.

Make the energy-potion decision explicitly

The Steam description gives a useful example: an energy potion can be saved for a clutch heal or retreat, or thrown to cause area damage. Neither choice is always correct. Save it when your health, escape route or ability economy makes a later recovery likely to determine survival. Throw it when several enemies are about to compress your space and area damage can prevent more incoming attacks than the future heal would restore.

Before using it, state the purpose in one sentence: “This keeps me alive through the next turn,” “This opens a retreat,” or “This removes enough enemies to make the room safe.” If you cannot identify a concrete purpose, wait until the board gives you one, provided waiting does not create a worse position.

Organize equipment around situations

  • Keep one option for immediate damage or crowd control.
  • Keep one option that restores health, energy or another resource when a retreat is possible.
  • Keep movement or defensive tools available when an enemy can close distance quickly.
  • Replace low-value items rather than carrying them indefinitely because they might become useful later.

Item effects and balance can change with updates. Verify what an item currently does in your game and avoid assuming that an effect remembered from an earlier run is unchanged.

How to handle the most important early threats

Knights: do not volunteer for a stun-lock

Developer guidance identifies Knights as dangerous at close range because their hits can stun-lock a player. The practical response is to pause before entering their attack distance. Use ranged attacks, thrown items, class abilities or terrain when those options are available, and do not walk into melee merely because the Knight is the nearest target.

If a Knight is already adjacent, prioritize the action that restores control of the next turn. That may be a disabling effect, a movement option, a high-damage attack that removes the Knight immediately or an item that creates separation. The correct choice depends on your class, resources and nearby enemies; there is no guaranteed single-button counter in the published material.

Skeleton Archers: solve line of sight

Skeleton Archers can deal heavy damage when you lack cover. Developer commentary also describes them as appearing in the Dungeon with groups of Skeletons, making the approach more dangerous than the archer’s health alone suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an archer is visible, identify cover before attacking. Move behind terrain if possible, approach along a route that prevents multiple shots, or use a thrown item and class ability to reduce the group before crossing open ground. If the map provides no cover, do not stand still and trade attacks by habit; create distance, change the angle or spend a resource that ends the archer’s next opportunity to fire.

To answer the common question “How do you beat Skeleton Archers?”, the reliable principle is to deny them an easy line of fire while handling the supporting Skeletons. The exact sequence changes with the map and your class, so a build-specific recipe would be less dependable than this positioning rule.

The Silver Dragon: respect unusual encounters

The official FAQ warns that the Silver Dragon is real and can hurt you. Treat unusual enemies as real tactical threats rather than decorative surprises. Check your health, escape squares and available items before committing, and avoid spending your last defensive option merely to discover what the enemy does.

Explore for routes, not just loot

Hidden or unusual dungeon areas can provide shortcuts, temporary reprieves, secret items or ways around the standard downward progression. The Steam description cautions that knowing when to use these secrets can determine whether a battle is manageable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a shortcut is valuable

Use an alternate route when it reduces exposure to a fight you cannot currently control, gives you time to recover or leads to an item that changes your ability to survive the next section. A shortcut is not automatically safer; it may trade a familiar sequence for a more dangerous unknown. Decide based on your current resources, not on the assumption that every secret is a reward.

When to stay on the ordinary route

Continue normally when your inventory is healthy, the visible enemies are manageable and the hidden path would consume a resource you need for a known threat. Information has value: if the standard route lets you learn the next area without committing to an unfamiliar encounter, that knowledge can be worth more than a speculative detour.

A practical plan for your first five runs

Run one: learn turns and controls

  1. Choose Easy Mode if you need extra room to understand the systems.
  2. Confirm movement, ability, inventory and quick-slot controls before taking risks.
  3. Practice ending turns with a retreat square available.
  4. Throw at least one item in a controlled encounter so the action becomes familiar.
  5. After death, write down the last position that removed your escape route.

Run two: study one class identity

  1. Use the same class again unless its tools were completely incompatible with your preferred play style.
  2. Identify the class action that changes a fight most dramatically.
  3. Test whether that action is better used to begin an encounter, recover from pressure or finish a threat.
  4. Notice which items complement the class rather than collecting everything indiscriminately.

Run three: practice ranged-threat positioning

  1. When a Skeleton Archer appears, locate cover before selecting an attack.
  2. Count the supporting Skeletons and plan how to prevent them from surrounding you.
  3. Compare the result of approaching through cover with the result of throwing an item first.
  4. Record which move left you with a retreat route after the archer’s turn.

Run four: test resource timing

  1. Carry an energy potion or comparable resource into a fight with more than one possible use.
  2. Before using it, decide whether healing, retreating or area damage has the highest immediate survival value.
  3. Commit to the choice and observe how the next two turns change.
  4. Review whether you died because you spent too early, waited too long or entered the fight without a plan.

Run five: make the route decision deliberately

  1. When a hidden area or shortcut appears, list what it could provide and what risk it introduces.
  2. Compare that risk with the enemies and resources on the ordinary path.
  3. Choose the route that addresses your current weakness rather than the route that sounds most secret.
  4. Keep the decision separate from curiosity; exploration is useful when it improves your odds, not merely because it is available.

Diagnose deaths instead of blaming randomness

What happened Likely decision problem Adjustment for the next run
You were surrounded after moving toward one enemy. The move was evaluated for immediate damage without checking enemy reach. Count hostile approaches first and preserve a square for retreat.
A Knight prevented you from acting normally. You entered melee without a disabling, escape or finishing option. Approach from a position that lets you use distance, terrain, a throwable or a class ability before the Knight can lock you down.
A Skeleton Archer removed most of your health. You crossed open ground or traded shots without cover. Change line of sight, use terrain and account for the supporting Skeletons.
You died with a full inventory of unused items. Items were treated as future insurance instead of present tactical tools. Assign a purpose to each important item and throw or activate it when that purpose appears.
You used an energy potion and still lost the fight. The item did not change the next turn enough to justify its cost. Compare healing, retreat and area damage before spending it, then choose the effect that changes enemy actions immediately.
You reached a secret route and became less safe. The shortcut was treated as a guaranteed reward. Evaluate hidden areas against your current health, resources and ability to handle an unfamiliar encounter.

What a successful run should feel like

A good run is not one in which every fight is won by maximum damage. It is one in which you repeatedly preserve choices: a safe square, a useful item, a line of sight that favors you or an ability that can interrupt the enemy’s plan. When the game presents a dangerous room, your objective is to make the room smaller and more predictable before committing.

The developer’s stated design philosophy emphasizes player skill, while also identifying proper item and equipment management as the key ingredient to survival. In practice, that means mechanical familiarity and strategic restraint work together. Learn the controls so using an item is effortless, then make the harder judgment about whether using it now prevents a worse turn later.

Balance and enemy behavior may change through updates. Recheck current in-game descriptions and bindings before relying on a detailed build or remembered interaction. The durable beginner principles are to think in turns, avoid voluntary melee against threats that punish it, deny archers easy lines of fire, use items actively and select routes according to the situation rather than habit.
