There is no definitive, universally agreed order of the best PS2 games. This is an editorial ranking: it weighs gameplay, originality, historical significance and how compelling each game remains as a PlayStation 2 experience. It also aims to represent the console’s breadth, from sprawling role-playing games to racers, platformers, horror and rhythm games. A critic-score chart or sales list answers a different question, and reasonable editors will rank these games differently.
How this list ranks the best games on PS2
Placement reflects four considerations: how satisfying the core play is, what feels distinctive or inventive, the game’s place in the history of the medium, and the appeal of the original PS2 version. Genre variety matters too: a list of 100 should not mistake one popular genre for the whole library.

This is a reasoned editorial selection, not a claim that every entry has been newly tested or that a single numerical measure can settle the order. Other outlets take different approaches: Twinfinite’s 2023 selection is alphabetical rather than a ranked verdict, while PS2Home’s 2026 list presents its own ranking and criteria. Neither establishes a universal consensus. Twinfinite’s 2023 selection and PS2Home’s 2026 ranking illustrate those editorial differences.

The strongest way to approach the PS2 library is to recognize how many different kinds of experience it contains. PlayStation’s retrospectives highlight action-adventure and platforming series such as Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper; puzzle-led adventure in Ico; car combat in Twisted Metal: Black; and later-era action and horror landmarks including God of War, Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of the Colossus. PlayStation’s PS Plus Classics retrospective also points to Dark Cloud’s blend of action RPG and town building, alongside PaRappa the Rapper 2 and Rogue Galaxy.

That variety is a useful test for any ranking. A racing game, rhythm game or unusual adventure should be judged by what it achieves within its own form, not penalized simply because it does not resemble a blockbuster action game. For more on how PlayStation presents the console’s history and its games, see its PS2 history timeline.
Why critic scores are not the same as a ranking
Critic scores offer one useful lens, but they are not a substitute for an editorial list. Metacritic’s PS2 browse page surfaces titles including Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, Grand Theft Auto III and Resident Evil 4 among its high-scoring games; that reflects aggregated review scores, not a genre-balanced judgment about which games matter most or remain most appealing to play. Metacritic’s PS2 games page is best read as a score-based reference alongside, rather than in place of, an editorial ranking.

What counts as a PS2 game here
The scope is games released for PlayStation 2. That is different from including PS1 titles merely because some PS2 consoles can play them, and different again from judging a later remake or remaster as though it were the original PS2 edition. When seeking out a specific game, check that the edition is actually the PS2 release; a modern version may change presentation, content or play feel. PS2Home likewise states its scope in terms of PS2 releases and distinguishes originals from backwards-compatible PS1 games and later versions. Its ranking and scope notes make that distinction explicit.
