10 smartwatches with features that could make your phone less necessary

If you want a watch that can handle calls, messages, maps, music and payments away from your phone, start with an LTE or eSIM model that matches your phone’s operating system. Cellular service is the key difference: GPS, downloaded music and contactless payments work offline, but calls, live messaging and cloud apps generally need LTE, Wi-Fi or a nearby phone.

What lets a smartwatch replace phone tasks?

In smartwatch terms, a 4G/LTE cellular connection links the watch to a carrier data plan without relying on the phone’s connection. With an activated eSIM and a compatible carrier, the watch can make and receive calls, send messages, stream music, use apps and access online services while the phone stays at home.

Cellular is not the only phone-reducing feature. Built-in GPS records routes and supports navigation; downloaded playlists work without a signal; stored boarding passes or cards can support contactless payments; and onboard health and safety tools can provide alerts when a phone is out of reach. Those offline functions continue on GPS-only models, but live services, app data and cloud synchronization may wait until the watch reconnects.

LTE usually adds a recurring carrier charge and uses more battery than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi operation. Coverage, carrier provisioning, app support and regional rules also determine what works in practice. Health features such as ECG, blood-oxygen readings and emergency services can vary by country, model and subscription.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check compatibility before buying

  • iPhone owners: Apple Watch models require an iPhone for setup and remain tied to Apple’s ecosystem, including the cellular account.
  • Android owners: Pixel and Galaxy Wear OS watches require Android phones. Samsung models are the natural fit for Samsung users, while Pixel models are designed around Google’s services.
  • Mixed or changing ecosystems: Verify the exact phone, operating-system version and carrier before paying for LTE. A watch that cannot be activated with your phone is not a standalone solution.
  • Garmin buyers: Garmin’s connectivity is more limited. Some models provide safety and tracking functions, while others are not full LTE phone replacements.

Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE LiveTrack, Assistance Plus, live event tracking and encouragement Runners prioritizing safety US-only availability in the cited guide and an older model
Garmin Venu 3 Onboard GPS, downloaded music and contactless payments Fitness users who can keep a phone nearby Not a full standalone LTE phone replacement

Apple Watch Series 10 GPS + Cellular

This is the balanced choice for iPhone owners who want calls, notifications, streamed music, GPS and health apps on the wrist. The cellular version uses an eSIM, but activation still requires a compatible carrier plan and an iPhone.

Google Pixel Watch 3 LTE

Pixel Watch 3 LTE combines cellular calling with Google Maps, Wallet and Wear OS apps. In cited testing, the 42 mm model ran for around 24 hours; LTE activity can shorten that further, so overnight charging may be part of the routine.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

The Ultra is aimed at Android users who want a more rugged watch with cellular calling, GPS, notifications and access to Spotify or YouTube Music. Its larger case suits outdoor use, although cited reviews criticized the battery experience.

Samsung Galaxy Watch7 LTE

Galaxy Watch7 LTE covers the mainstream Android feature set: cellular calls and messages, Wear OS applications, payments and GPS. It makes the most sense when your phone and carrier already support Samsung’s ecosystem.

Samsung Galaxy Watch6 LTE

The previous-generation Galaxy Watch6 LTE still provides cellular calls, messages and Wear OS functions. Its appeal is the possibility of finding prior-generation pricing, while buyers should accept older hardware than the Watch7.

Huawei Watch 5 LTE

Huawei’s LTE model emphasizes health and navigation, with eSIM calls and messages, Petal Maps, spot ECG checks, blood-oxygen readings and fitness tracking. Its smaller app ecosystem and limited streaming choices make it less flexible as a phone substitute.

Apple Watch SE 2 GPS + Cellular

The SE 2 is the lower-cost cellular entry point for iPhone users. It can deliver notifications, calls and music away from the phone, but uses older hardware and still needs an iPhone for setup and ecosystem access.

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Ultra 2 adds LTE to a bright, rugged design with outdoor bands and safety features. Apple quotes up to 36 hours of standard battery life, while its quoted all-day LTE figure is up to 18 hours with a service plan. Heavy cellular use therefore requires more frequent charging than the headline endurance suggests.

Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE

This running-focused model uses LTE for LiveTrack, Assistance Plus, live event tracking and encouragement features rather than acting as a general-purpose phone. The cited guide lists availability in the United States and identifies the watch as an older model.

Garmin Venu 3

Venu 3 can remove the phone from a workout through onboard GPS, downloaded music and contactless payments. It is useful when the phone remains nearby for calls and live services, but it is not a standalone LTE replacement.

Battery, plans and real-world trade-offs

Budget for two separate purchases: the watch and, for cellular models, a carrier service plan. The carrier must support the watch’s eSIM and may require the watch and phone to share an account or number. Prices and activation rules depend on country and carrier, so check those terms before ordering.

Battery estimates change with screen settings, GPS, calls, streaming and signal strength. The documented examples show the spread: the 42 mm Pixel Watch 3 lasted about 24 hours in cited testing; Apple quotes 36 hours for Ultra 2 in standard use and up to 18 hours of all-day LTE battery life with a service plan; Huawei Watch 5 testing reported three to four days, falling to about two days with LTE and an always-on display.

What an LTE watch still cannot replace

  • Many apps require a companion-phone setup, a supported account or a specific operating-system ecosystem.
  • Streaming and live maps depend on cellular coverage, data service and app support; downloaded content is more reliable offline.
  • Large-screen tasks such as long-form typing, complex photo work and full web browsing remain easier on a phone.
  • Emergency, ECG and blood-oxygen features may be restricted by geography, approvals or subscriptions. Treat them as support tools, not a guarantee of medical diagnosis or rescue.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Match the watch to your phone: iPhone for Apple Watch, Android for Pixel and Galaxy Wear OS models.
  2. Decide whether you need true phone independence. If you do, choose LTE/eSIM and confirm carrier compatibility; otherwise, GPS-only may cost less and last longer.
  3. List the tasks you actually want to move to your wrist: calls, messages, maps, music, payments, safety tracking or health monitoring.
  4. Check battery expectations with LTE, GPS and an always-on display enabled, not only the best-case Bluetooth figure.
  5. Verify regional availability and health-feature support before purchase, especially for ECG, blood oxygen and emergency functions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
