1. Astro Bot: for playful platforming and exploration
Pick Astro Bot if you want an upbeat adventure built around movement, discovery, and playful surprises rather than a sprawling role-playing campaign. PlayStation describes Astro using a Dual Speeder and traveling through worlds filled with secrets. That makes this a natural starting point for someone seeking a colorful, exploration-led platform game. PlayStation’s catalog listing confirms it is offered as a PS5 game in the US catalog.

God of War Ragnarök follows Kratos and Atreus through the Nine Realms as they confront the events surrounding Ragnarök. Its appeal is the mix of narrative, mythic setting, and action; it makes the most sense if you want a substantial story rather than a quick session-based game.
#1 Best Overall
- With the return of classic cars, iconic tracks, and fan-favourite modes like GT Simulation and Sport Mode - Gran Turismo 7 is the complete Real Driving Simulator, 25 years in the making.
- Find your line. Whether you're a racer, collector, tuner, designer, photographer or arcade fan - immerse yourself in the facets of automotive culture that matter most to you.
- Connect and compete. Join an international community of drivers to share race strategies, tuning tips, livery designs and photos, before taking to the track to go head-to-head.
Newcomers should know that it follows God of War (2018). Playing that game first provides the earlier chapter of Kratos and Atreus’s story, though it is a choice rather than a prerequisite established by PlayStation. Ragnarök is available on PS5, but it is not a PS5-exclusive: PlayStation’s franchise FAQ lists it on PS4, PS5, and PC. PlayStation’s own estimate is up to 40 hours for the main story plus selected side quests, or 55–60 hours to see everything; the estimate depends on difficulty and what you choose to do. See PlayStation’s game page and franchise FAQ.
3. Gran Turismo 7: for racing and car culture
Choose Gran Turismo 7 if you want a dedicated racing game rather than a story adventure. It gives this list a motorsport option alongside the action and platform games. PlayStation’s US catalog lists it among PS5 offerings; check your local storefront for the edition available to you. View the official catalog.

4. Returnal: for intense, repeat-run science-fiction action
Returnal is the pick for players drawn to high-pressure action and a science-fiction setting. Its place here is as the list’s more intense action option, not as an easy introduction or a universal fit. PlayStation’s catalog includes it among its PS5 games. Check the catalog listing.

If you want a game that rewards patience and careful decisions in combat, consider Demon’s Souls. It fills the demanding action role in this selection; it is a less suitable first choice if you specifically want a relaxed, low-pressure game. The title appears in PlayStation’s US PS5 catalog. See PlayStation’s catalog.

7. Horizon Forbidden West: for science-fiction exploration
Horizon Forbidden West suits players who want an adventure framed by a science-fiction world and exploration. Pick Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales if a superhero-focused action adventure sounds more appealing than a fantasy or science-fiction saga. It gives this list a Marvel setting and a different lead character from the broader Spider-Man game lineup. PlayStation’s US catalog includes it among PS5 games. Check the catalog.
9. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: for imaginative action-platforming
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the choice for someone who wants action and platforming in a colorful, imaginative adventure. It adds a lighter-toned alternative to the list’s more serious combat games. PlayStation’s US catalog lists it as a PS5 game. See the catalog listing.

Confirm the current platform, edition, online requirements, and availability in your local store before buying; those details can change and are not established by the catalog links here.
How to narrow the list to one game

- Prefer playful exploration? Look at Astro Bot or Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
- Want a specific setting? Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for samurai action, Horizon Forbidden West for science-fiction adventure, or Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for superhero action.
- Want racing? Gran Turismo 7 is the dedicated racing pick.
- Want demanding action? Consider Returnal or Demon’s Souls, but choose based on whether intense repeat-run action or deliberate, challenging combat appeals more.
- Want to play with a group? Helldivers 2 is the multiplayer-focused choice; verify the current online and platform details locally.
None of these recommendations should be read as a claim that every game suits every player. The best first purchase is the one matching the experience you actually want, and the official catalog establishes listings—not a universal ranking or a guarantee of current stock, price, or edition in every region.
