10 Games With Permadeath That Are 10/10 Masterpieces

Permadeath means a death has a lasting cost: an entire run may reset, or a named hero can disappear from a campaign. The best examples make that risk meaningful rather than merely punishing. These ten games span action, tactics, role-playing, platforming, deckbuilding and strategy. “10/10” here is an editorial standard for exceptional design, not a claim that every critic awarded a perfect score.

What permadeath actually changes

Permadeath is not one rule. In a run-based game, dying can erase the current map, build, deck or route while leaving knowledge and selected unlocks behind. In a campaign, a fallen soldier or adventurer may be gone permanently, changing the roster and the story. That distinction determines whether you want a quick restart, a long strategic recovery, or a character drama built around irreversible decisions.

1. Hades: the best first permadeath game

Hades is the most approachable starting point because each failed escape attempt feeds both mechanical growth and a continuing story. Supergiant Games describes it as “a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth.” Each attempt combines new Olympian builds, so a death is a reset of the run rather than a dead end for the wider narrative.

Permanent upgrades, God Mode and thousands of story events let players tune the difficulty without removing the stakes. Version 1.0 launched on September 17, 2020. PlayStation’s current listing records more than 50 Game of the Year awards (accessed in 2026), and physical editions have been released for Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. Choose Hades if you want fast combat but need a generous route back into the game after a mistake.

#1 Best Overall
Hades - Nintendo Switch
  • Battle out of hell in Hades, recipient of more than 50 Game of the Year awards
  • Includes a download code for the Hades Original Soundtrack, by composer Darren Korb, best known for his work on developer Supergiant's past titles like Transistor and Bastion.
  • Also includes a full-color 32-page character compendium booklet, featuring beautiful artwork of the game's colorful cast of gods, ghosts, and monsters, all by Supergiant's art director Jen Zee.
  • Defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
  • As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself.

2. FTL: Faster Than Light: panic as a strategy system

FTL turns a single spaceship voyage into a chain of emergencies. A run can collapse through a bad route, a failed boarding defense or a cascade of system damage, and the ship is lost when the run ends. Its lasting reward is understanding: crew assignment, weapon timing, fuel management and risk assessment become sharper after every disaster.

PC Gamer captures the appeal as “panic, disaster, triage, and triumph” while you micromanage a crew. FTL is ideal when you want permadeath to emerge from interacting systems rather than from a single boss encounter. It is systems-first storytelling: the memorable narrative is the one your crew’s crisis creates.

3. Into the Breach: every turn is a solvable sacrifice

Into the Breach is a compact tactical puzzle in which enemy attacks are visible before you commit. GameSpot documents that a run resets when all units or the grid’s power are lost. That clear information makes failure instructive: you can identify the turn where you accepted the wrong sacrifice, protected the wrong building or chose the wrong mission.

PC Gamer calls it highly replayable and emphasizes the hard choices about what to sacrifice. Battles are short compared with campaign-scale tactics games, making it a strong choice for players who want consequential turns without a long recovery period. The game released on February 27, 2018, according to GameSpot’s listing.

Hades II - Nintendo Switch™ 2 Edition
  • Battle beyond the Underworld using dark sorcery to take on the Titan of Time in this bewitching sequel to the award-winning rogue-like dungeon crawler.

4. Darkest Dungeon: losing people creates the story

Darkest Dungeon treats adventuring as an attrition problem. Stress, famine, disease and an advancing darkness can break a party long before its health reaches zero. A character’s death is a permanent roster loss, while the settlement and campaign continue, forcing you to recruit and train replacements.

Xbox describes it as “a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring.” The same listing reproduces the praise, “Darkest Dungeon is a masterpiece of emergent storytelling.” That description fits because the drama comes from the combination of stress, imperfect recovery and the names attached to doomed expeditions. The Xbox release date listed for the game is February 28, 2018.

5. XCOM 2: the campaign where a mistake has a name

XCOM 2 makes permadeath personal. A rookie can become a trusted specialist over many missions, and losing that soldier can remove a key ability from the roster at exactly the wrong time. The campaign does not reset around that loss; your strategic map, technology and remaining squad must absorb it.

GameSpot lists versions for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch, iOS, Android, Linux and OS X, identifies Firaxis Games as developer, and gives February 5, 2016 as the release date. War of the Chosen adds factions, environments and replayability. Pick XCOM 2 when you want the longest arc on this list and are willing to manage both battlefield risk and campaign logistics.

Rank #3
Hades Limited Edition (Nintendo Switch)
  • As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unravelling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.
  • The Olympians have your back! Meet Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and many more, and choose from their dozens of powerful Boons that enhance your abilities. There are thousands of viable character builds to discover as you go.
  • A fully-voiced cast of colourful, larger-than-life characters is waiting to meet you! Grow your relationships with them, and experience thousands of unique story events as you learn about what's really at stake for this big, dysfunctional family.
  • New surprises await each time you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld, whose guardian bosses will remember you. Use the powerful Mirror of Night to grow permanently stronger and give yourself a leg up the next time you run away from home.
  • Permanent upgrades mean you don't have to be a god yourself to experience the exciting combat and gripping story. Though, if you happen to be one, crank up the challenge and get ready for some white-knuckle action that will put your well-practiced skills to the test.

6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses: choose how permanent loss feels

Fire Emblem: Three Houses builds its tactical battles around relationships. Allies are not interchangeable pieces: bonding with faction members makes a potential death matter outside combat. Its staple permadeath system is adjustable, so you can select classic permanent loss or a more forgiving mode.

That switch makes Three Houses useful for players who want the emotional and strategic structure of permadeath without being locked into its harshest setting. The campaign’s faction focus supplies character continuity, while additional downloadable content provides another scenario for players who want more of that cast and world.

7. Tactics Ogre: Reborn: the hardest tactical recommendation

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is aimed at players who want campaign-level consequences and dense tactical decisions. Its rewind feature can soften a short-term positioning error, but it does not turn the broader campaign into a consequence-free exercise. Strategic choices, difficult battles and the direction of the story still carry weight.

GameSpot lists PC, Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions, with a November 11, 2022 release date. Choose it over a lighter tactics game if you enjoy examining a battle, revising a move and still living with the larger decisions that follow.

- Hades - [PlayStation 5]

8. Spelunky 2: the purest failure-and-retry loop

Spelunky 2 makes the cost immediate: one mistake ends the expedition. Procedural caves, traps, enemy patterns and route choices ensure that memorizing a single level is not enough. Progress comes from learning how the game communicates danger and from executing that knowledge under pressure.

There is little campaign cushioning compared with Hades or Fire Emblem. Spelunky 2 is the right pick when you want a clean platforming test in which every restart begins with a fresh layout and your only dependable advantage is improved judgment.

9. Returnal: demanding action with persistent understanding

Returnal resets a run after death, but the loop is not empty. Knowledge of enemy behavior, room layouts and weapon priorities remains, and selected progression carries across cycles. That balance keeps the game’s high-speed combat demanding without making every attempt feel disconnected from the last.

Its third-person shooting, precise aiming and science-fiction atmosphere make it the strongest action-heavy alternative to Hades on this list. Choose it if you prefer reflexes and spatial awareness to menu-based planning, and if a run’s tension should come from staying alive in the moment.

10. Slay the Spire: permadeath for deckbuilding minds

In Slay the Spire, a run ends when your character dies. The permanent reward is analytical: you learn which cards dilute a deck, which routes expose you to too much risk and how relics change the value of an entire strategy. Every defeat can therefore improve the next draft without making the next run predetermined.

PC Gamer uses Slay the Spire as a benchmark for Hades’ influence on roguelikes. It is the best recommendation here for players who want permadeath to test planning, probability and adaptation rather than reaction speed. Its narrative is intentionally lighter than Hades or Fire Emblem; the evolving deck is the story of the run.
