These ten stories use memory loss in very different ways: some characters lose a single night, others cannot remember their identity or a stretch of their lives, and one struggles to form new memories at all. That difference shapes whether the result is a comedy, a thriller, or a science-fiction mystery. This is a curated selection, not a ranking—and not every character literally wakes at the moment their amnesia begins.
Ten stories, several kinds of memory loss
In its October 2, 2026 feature, Hindustan Times described these characters as having to “separate fact from fiction to piece together reality.” The phrase fits the shared storytelling hook, but the stories do not depict one interchangeable condition. The list spans films and novels, a missing night, lost personal history, recurring resets, and deliberate memory alteration.

When a missing night becomes a mystery
The Hangover (2009): one blank evening
Phil, Stu, and Alan wake in a Las Vegas hotel with no recollection of the night before. Doug, who is due to marry the next day, is missing, so the friends must reconstruct the evening to find him. The amnesia is limited to a recent stretch of time; the comedy comes from the strange evidence left behind and their effort to make it add up.
The Bourne Identity (2002): a missing identity
Rescued by Italian fishermen after being shot, Jason Bourne cannot remember his name or why someone tried to kill him. His combat abilities, multiple identities, and bank details offer clues without giving him a straightforward account of his past. The film is based on Robert Ludlum’s novels, and its suspense comes from the gap between Bourne’s apparent capability and his lack of personal history.
#1 Best Overall
When the past returns in fragments—or not at all
Project Hail Mary: Ryland Grace’s gradual recognition
Andy Weir’s novel opens with Ryland Grace alone on a spacecraft, unsure who he is or why he is there. Memories return in fragments as he identifies himself as a science teacher and begins to understand his mission. The year attached to a separate adaptation should not be confused with the novel’s stated 2021 publication year; Reactor also discusses the novel among science-fiction narratives that open with amnesia.
Dark City (1998): memories as part of the conspiracy
John Murdoch wakes in a hotel bathtub and is wanted for murders he cannot remember. The film’s night-bound city and alien Strangers turn his uncertainty into a larger question: whether the memories people rely on are truly their own. Here, memory alteration is not just a private obstacle but part of the science-fiction worldbuilding.
Rank #2
The Rook (2012): a secret to conceal
Daniel O’Malley’s novel begins with Myfanwy Thomas waking in a London park surrounded by dead bodies and without her memories. Unlike characters who can openly ask what happened, she must hide her amnesia while investigating who erased her past and who betrayed her secret agency. Reactor identifies the novel as a narrative that opens with amnesia.

Memento (2000): unable to make new long-term memories
Leonard Shelby’s problem is not simply forgetting an old identity or one night: he is described as unable to form long-term memories. He relies on Polaroids, notes, and tattoos to track a suspected killer and make sense of events. Those records become central to the mystery because he must interpret clues without the continuity that memory usually supplies.
Rank #3
Before I Go to Sleep (2014): a daily reset
After an attack, Christine Lucas experiences a daily memory reset. A neurophysiologist advises her to keep a secret video diary, while accounts from him and her husband conflict. The recurring pattern makes trust part of the thriller: each day, Christine has to work out which version of events to believe.
What Alice Forgot (2009): a decade out of view
After a head injury, Alice Love believes she is 29, happily married, and pregnant. Her actual life is ten years further along and sharply different from the one she recalls. The novel’s multiple points of view complicate the gap: Alice has to reckon not only with the life she cannot remember, but also with other people’s versions of it.
Rank #4
The Good Son: gaps, medication, and family secrets
In this thriller, Yu-jin’s memory gaps are linked to epilepsy medication. A blood-soaked awakening sends him back through his recollections and family history in search of an explanation. The work is based on a novel by You-Jeong Jeong.

Why these portrayals are not interchangeable
- Different spans: The friends in The Hangover lose the previous night; Alice’s missing time covers a decade; Bourne lacks his identity and past; Leonard struggles to form new long-term memories.
- Different patterns: Christine’s memory resets daily, while other stories focus on persistent gaps or memories returning in fragments.
- Different causes within the fiction: The stories invoke an attack, injury, medication, unexplained loss, or deliberate memory alteration. Those plot devices are not equivalent explanations of real-world memory disorders.
- Different narrative uses: Lost identity drives suspense for Bourne, Murdoch, and Myfanwy; Leonard’s condition structures a mystery; the Las Vegas blank fuels comedy.
These are dramatic fictional portrayals, not medical guidance. A BMJ review of film depictions noted that 50 First Dates portrays a syndrome unlike any known neurological or psychiatric condition; that specific criticism is a reminder not to treat familiar screen conventions as clinical examples. It does not establish that every story in this list is medically inaccurate. Read the BMJ review.
