10 Data-Only eSIM Providers Compared: Choose the Right Plan for Your Trip

There is no universal best data-only eSIM. The right choice depends on every country on your itinerary, the amount of data you will use, trip length, hotspot rules, activation requirements and whether your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. This comparison identifies the strongest use cases for 10 widely discussed providers, then shows how to verify a plan before paying.

What a data-only eSIM does (and does not) include

An eSIM is a downloadable SIM profile. After installation, your phone connects to a partner mobile network without a physical card. A data-only plan supplies mobile internet; it normally does not replace your ordinary phone number for cellular calls or SMS. TechRadar’s review describes the reviewed Airalo plans as data-only, so you should plan to use messaging and calling apps over data unless the specific plan says otherwise.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Some products use different terminology or sell separate offers. For example, Saily’s monthly US-number product is distinct from its travel data plans and requires identity verification. Do not assume that a provider’s travel eSIM includes a local number simply because another product from the same company does.

Check these five things before buying

  1. Device compatibility and lock status: your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Airalo’s help guidance states both requirements, while Nomad directs customers to its device compatibility list.
  2. Destination coverage: compare the exact countries and territories in the plan. Local, regional and global labels are not interchangeable; a regional plan may exclude an island, dependent territory or border destination on your route.
  3. Total data and validity: compare the allowance for the whole validity period, not only the headline price. A cheap 1 GB plan can cost more than a larger package after repeated top-ups.
  4. Hotspot and fair-use terms: tethering may be allowed, capped or excluded. “Unlimited” can still involve speed reductions after a fair-use threshold.
  5. Activation and support: check whether first activation requires Wi-Fi, whether the plan can be topped up after installation, and how support handles a failed connection.

At-a-glance comparison

Provider Best-fit use case Coverage or plan facts Important limitation
Ubigi Broad destination choice and flexible plan terms TechRadar’s review, updated 22 September 2026, reports 201 destinations, one-off, monthly and annual plans; its app can top up without an existing data connection. No voice/SMS add-ons were reported; another provider may be cheaper in some regions.
Saily Built-in security tools Plans from 1 GB to unlimited, with regional and global options; TechRadar reports ad blocking, web protection and virtual-location features. Connection performance varied by destination in the review, and initial activation required Wi-Fi.
Airalo Global-plan breadth Local, regional and global formats across 200+ destinations and regions according to TechRadar’s 2026 review. Reviewed plans were data-only; verify each plan’s tethering and fair-use conditions.
Nomad Value in selected regions and hotspot use Support documentation says tethering works; some plans offer add-ons and some include a local number. Catalog and prices vary by destination; TechRadar reports no unlimited plans.
Holafly High-use or advertised unlimited tiers Provider lists plans in 200+ destinations, plus monthly global tiers including advertised 25 GB and unlimited options. Some destination plans impose fair-use speed reductions or hotspot restrictions; monthly global terms differ.
aloSIM Narrower travel-plan requirements Included in TechRadar’s comparison of travel eSIM services. The available evidence does not establish comparable destination-by-destination pricing, coverage or terms.
Airhub Shoppers checking additional marketplace options Covered in the same broad comparison. Plan pages were not examined at comparable depth, so verify every allowance and network partner yourself.
FlexiRoam Travelers whose route needs a specialized package Included in TechRadar’s service comparison. No fully comparable, current plan dataset is established here.
GigSky Specialized connectivity, including some transport scenarios The comparison includes GigSky among services that can address narrower needs such as cruise or in-flight connectivity. Check whether the exact cruise, flight or destination plan is available before departure.
Firsty Alternative plans for specific travel situations Included in the broad comparison of travel eSIM providers. Coverage, speed policy, hotspot support and pricing require destination-specific confirmation.

The final five entries are not ranked winners. Their own plan pages were not mined with the same depth as the first five, so treat them as leads to investigate rather than verified top-ten choices.

Five providers with the clearest documented strengths

Ubigi: flexible coverage and offline top-ups

Ubigi is the strongest fit when you want a large destination catalog and several billing shapes. TechRadar’s review, last updated 22 September 2026, reports service in 201 destinations and one-off, monthly and annual plans. The ability to top up in the app without an active data connection can be valuable if your allowance runs out while travelling.

Ubigi says its mobile data service supports smartphones, tablets, laptops and connected cars. That breadth is useful for a tablet or vehicle modem, but check that the exact plan supports your device category. The review found no voice or SMS add-ons and noted that Nomad may cost less in some regions. Compare the complete allowance and validity for your own route rather than treating the 201-destination figure as a guarantee of service everywhere.

Saily: security features built into the app

Saily is aimed at travelers who want network-adjacent tools in the same app. TechRadar describes integrated ad blocking, web protection and virtual-location features, while Saily advertises regional and global plans from 1 GB to unlimited. Those features can reduce nuisance traffic and provide extra controls, but they do not guarantee anonymity, eliminate all tracking or ensure the fastest connection.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

TechRadar reported that performance varied by destination and that initial activation required Wi-Fi. Install and activate before leaving reliable internet access. Saily also sells a separate monthly US-number product requiring identity verification; do not confuse that offer with a standard travel data plan.

Airalo: local, regional and global formats

Airalo is a practical starting point when one trip crosses several countries. TechRadar’s 2026 review describes local, regional and global formats covering more than 200 destinations and regions. A local plan can be economical for one country; a regional plan avoids changing profiles at each border; a global plan is convenient for a multi-continent itinerary.

Airalo’s help guidance says the handset must support eSIM and be network-unlocked. Confirm both before purchase. The reviewed offering is data-only, so retain your primary SIM for ordinary calls and texts if you need them, or use internet calling. Read the exact plan page for hotspot and fair-use language rather than assuming all Airalo packages behave alike.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Nomad: hotspot support and regional value

Nomad is worth comparing when tethering matters or when regional pricing is competitive. Its support page states: “Yes, Nomad’s eSIMs support tethering / hotspot.” Some plans also offer add-ons, and some include a local number. Those are plan-level features, not universal guarantees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechRadar describes Nomad as a value pick in some regions and reports that it has no unlimited plans. Prices, allowances and available destinations change, so an old Europe example should not be reused as a current quote. Compare the amount of data you actually need, the validity clock and the price of any add-on before selecting it.

Holafly: high-use plans, with important conditions

Holafly lists plans in more than 200 destinations and offers destination plans alongside monthly global tiers. Its current provider homepage describes monthly global options including 25 GB and an advertised unlimited tier. That can suit travelers who stream, upload photos or work remotely, but “unlimited” is a plan claim rather than a promise of unrestricted speed.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

TechRadar reports potential speed reductions after fair-use thresholds and hotspot restrictions on certain destination travel plans. The official monthly global product has different terms. Check the exact product’s hotspot allowance, fair-use policy, validity and supported countries; never transfer the conditions of one Holafly tier to another.

How to choose by itinerary and usage

One country

Start with a local plan. It usually avoids paying for countries you will not visit. Confirm that airports, offshore islands and any stopovers are included. If you cross a border for a day trip, calculate whether a regional plan is simpler or cheaper than buying a second local eSIM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several countries in one region

Compare regional plans from Airalo, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi and any other provider that explicitly lists every stop. Coverage maps can hide exclusions, so make a checklist of countries and territories and tick each one against the plan’s included-area list.

Multiple continents or frequent travel

A global plan can reduce profile changes, but convenience may cost more per gigabyte. Airalo is the clearest documented global-format option in this comparison; Ubigi, Saily and Holafly also advertise broad or global products. Compare the validity period with your travel calendar and check whether the plan starts on installation or first network connection.

Work, laptop tethering or heavy media use

Estimate the total data for the whole trip, then verify tethering explicitly. Nomad documents hotspot support. Holafly’s hotspot rules vary by plan, and other providers may cap or exclude tethering. Video calls, cloud backups and operating-system updates can consume an allowance quickly; disable automatic updates and photo backup until you are on trusted Wi-Fi if your plan is limited.

How much data do you need while travelling?

Usage pattern Typical planning approach Controls that stretch the allowance
Light navigation and messaging Choose a small local package and add data only if needed. Download offline maps; restrict background data.
Regular social feeds, ride-hailing and photos Choose a medium allowance for the full validity period. Disable automatic video playback and cloud photo uploads.
Remote work and frequent video calls Choose a larger package and confirm hotspot support before purchase. Use lower video resolution; pause system updates.
Streaming or multiple connected devices Compare high-cap or advertised unlimited plans, then read fair-use and tethering terms. Stream over Wi-Fi where possible and monitor usage daily.

These are planning categories, not measured consumption guarantees. Your phone’s settings screen is the best source for your own historical usage; reset the counter at departure and review it during the trip.

Install and activate an eSIM safely

  1. Confirm the handset: check the manufacturer’s eSIM specification, verify that the device is carrier-unlocked and use the provider’s compatibility checker where available.
  2. Buy the exact destination plan: select the countries, allowance, validity and hotspot terms. Save the order email and activation details offline.
  3. Install on Wi-Fi: open the phone’s cellular settings, choose the option to add an eSIM, scan the provider’s QR code or use its app, and label the new line clearly. Saily’s reviewed activation required Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi is sensible for any first installation.
  4. Set data correctly: select the travel eSIM as mobile data, turn off automatic data switching if your phone offers it, and keep data roaming enabled only on the travel line when the provider instructs you to do so.
  5. Protect your primary number: disable data roaming on your home SIM to avoid accidental charges. Keep the home line active for SMS authentication only if your carrier does not charge for it.
  6. Test before leaving: with Wi-Fi disabled, check that a webpage loads, note the network name and confirm that the plan’s validity has started when you intend it to.

Privacy and routing: what an eSIM does not tell you

An eSIM changes how you obtain mobile service; it does not automatically make traffic private. A USENIX Security Symposium 2025 presentation reported that many travel eSIMs in its tested sample used Home-Routed Roaming, where data and signaling are routed back through the home network for processing. One example in that presentation showed a Holafly connection routing through China Mobile even though the provider is headquartered in Ireland.

That is a profile-specific finding, not proof about every provider, destination or plan. If routing jurisdiction matters, read the provider’s privacy and network documentation, avoid sensitive activity on unfamiliar networks, use HTTPS, keep your operating system updated and consider a trusted VPN according to your organization’s policy. Security features advertised by an app should be treated as additional controls, not a guarantee of private routing or consistent performance.

Common problems and fixes

The eSIM will not install

  • Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi and retry the QR code or in-app installation.
  • Confirm that the phone is unlocked and that its regional model supports eSIM.
  • Do not delete a partially installed profile until support confirms it can be reissued.

Installed, but no data connection

  • Select the travel line for mobile data and check that data roaming is enabled on that line if required.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi briefly, restart the phone and allow a few minutes for network registration.
  • Check that your location is included and that the validity period has begun.

Hotspot does not work

  • Read the exact plan’s tethering clause; destination plans can differ from monthly or global products.
  • Confirm that the phone’s personal-hotspot setting is using the travel line.
  • If the plan forbids tethering, use a permitted larger plan rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.

Data runs out

  • Check usage statistics to identify video, backup or update spikes.
  • Use the provider’s top-up flow. Ubigi’s reviewed app can top up without an existing data connection; other services may require Wi-Fi.
  • If no add-on exists, buy a second compatible plan only after confirming that the phone can store multiple eSIM profiles.

A practical decision checklist

  • Every destination on the itinerary appears in the plan’s included-country list.
  • The phone is eSIM-capable, unlocked and supported by the provider.
  • The allowance covers the entire validity period, with a known top-up price.
  • Hotspot use is explicitly permitted if you need a laptop or second device.
  • Any “unlimited” claim is accompanied by fair-use and speed conditions you accept.
  • You know whether calls, SMS or a local number are included.
  • Activation instructions and support details are saved offline.
  • You have tested the connection before relying on it for navigation or work.

Bottom line

Choose by itinerary rather than by a universal ranking. Ubigi stands out for documented destination breadth and offline top-ups; Saily for integrated security tools; Airalo for local, regional and global formats; Nomad for documented hotspot support and value in selected regions; and Holafly for high-use tiers whose fair-use and tethering conditions you have read carefully. The other services may fit specialized routes, but their exact coverage and terms need the same destination-level verification. Recheck live plan pages immediately before purchase because prices, networks, allowances and availability change.
