There is no single best card payment machine for every small business: the right choice depends on where you operate, how customers pay, whether you need a handheld terminal or a phone-connected reader, and the full cost of processing. This shortlist covers 10 systems named in Shopify’s small-business comparison, not an independently tested ranking. Product availability, fees and hardware prices vary by market, so confirm current local terms before buying.
10 card payment machines and systems to consider
The options below range from compact readers paired with a phone or tablet to handheld and point-of-sale systems. Shopify’s comparison provides the shortlist; it does not establish a universal winner or guarantee current prices and rates.

| Option | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Shopify POS | Check whether Shopify-supported hardware is available in your country and whether your account uses Shopify Payments. An external terminal instead needs a separate processor account. |
| Square | Compare the reader and terminal form factors, transaction type rates and any plan-specific terms. Square also describes ways to accept payments without a separate reader. |
| Clover Flex | Consider it if you need a handheld terminal, but verify processor compatibility: Clover says its devices cannot be used with other payment processors. |
| PayPal Zettle | Compare the compact card reader with the terminal-style option and verify current local availability and pricing. |
| Toast Go 2 | Include it in your shortlist if its availability and workflow fit your business; verify current terms directly with the provider. |
| Stripe Terminal | Check supported countries, hardware, payment setup and integration requirements for your business before choosing it. |
| Lightspeed | Confirm the compatible hardware, processing arrangement and software terms for your region and use case. |
| eHopper | Verify local availability, supported devices, payment processing and any subscription costs. |
| Aloha Cloud | Check whether the service and its hardware suit your business category and are offered in your market. |
| KORONA POS | Confirm compatible terminals, processing options, local availability and ongoing software costs. |
The shortlist is not a like-for-like comparison of prices or features: exact terms depend on region, merchant category, plan and provider. The comparison page does not state its publication date in the reviewed material, so its listed figures should not be treated as current quotes. See Shopify’s comparison.
What do the hardware prices tell you?
Oklahoma State University Extension’s 2025 POS comparison listed the following prices. They are historical figures from that fact sheet, not verified current prices or universal offers.

Check the current price in your country and confirm the exact model before you budget. A device’s purchase price does not establish processing fees, subscription costs or whether the hardware is compatible with your existing POS setup. Read the Oklahoma State University Extension comparison.
How to choose the right setup
1. Calculate the full cost
Compare the hardware purchase or rental charge, software subscription, percentage processing fee and per-transaction charge. Also check whether keyed or online payments have different rates from in-person card payments. Clover says software fees and processing rates depend on business type; Square distinguishes payment types and notes that plan terms can vary. Use the provider’s current local pricing, not a rate copied from an old roundup. Clover pricing and Square fees.
Rank #2
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
2. Match the device to the way you sell
A small reader paired with a phone or tablet can suit a mobile seller or temporary checkout. A handheld terminal can be more appropriate for taking payments around a venue or at a customer’s table, while a countertop setup may suit a fixed till. These are workflow distinctions, not claims about tested comfort or performance.

3. Confirm payment methods and receipt needs
Check that the precise device supports the payment methods your customers use, including chip, contactless/NFC and mobile wallets, and that it fits any PIN-entry or receipt process you need. Shopify says its supported readers accept chip, contactless and mobile-wallet payments where the hardware is available. Availability depends on the reader and country. Shopify’s card reader guidance.

4. Check country, operating system and POS integration
Confirm that the reader works in your country, with your phone or tablet operating system, processor account and POS software. Shopify-supported readers require Shopify Payments. With an external terminal, payment processing happens separately and transaction details in Shopify POS are limited; you may need to mark an order paid manually. Review Shopify’s hardware compatibility guidance.
5. Understand offline limits
Do not assume a machine will safely store payments whenever the connection drops. Square says offline payments must reconnect within 24 hours; some Square Reader generations do not support offline payments. The merchant bears the risk if an offline payment is later declined or disputed. Check the specific model and provider rules before relying on offline acceptance. Square offline payment guidance.

When you may not need a separate reader
Square describes alternatives that can avoid buying a reader in some setups: Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android, invoices, payment links and a virtual terminal. Whether these options work depends on the seller’s device, account and country. They do not necessarily replace a dedicated terminal or suit every checkout workflow. Square Retail information.

Quick Recap
Practical starting points by business setup
- Already use Shopify: Start with Shopify’s supported readers and country availability. Compare that integrated route with an external terminal only after accounting for its separate processor and limited transaction detail in Shopify POS.
- Need a standalone terminal: Compare terminal-style devices such as Square Terminal, Clover Flex and PayPal Zettle Terminal with compact readers. Confirm processor compatibility before choosing Clover, whose devices cannot be used with other processors.
- Need low-commitment mobile acceptance: Check whether phone-based Tap to Pay is available for your device and account, and whether it supports the receipt, PIN and recordkeeping workflow you need.
