No single tool replaces Bolt.new for everyone. The right alternative depends on whether you want to describe an app in a prompt and receive a hosted result, work in an editable development environment, build visually, or work in an AI code editor on a codebase you control. Among the ten tools below, Lovable is the closest match to Bolt’s prompt-to-app flow, and Replit is the stronger choice when the agent, the editor, hosting, and a database should live in one workspace.
The two comparison articles behind these placements are dated August and September 2026. They describe fit for different workflows, not measured quality. The September 2026 comparison states that it did not run one shared build across its eight alternatives.

Six questions that separate the tools
Answer these six questions for your project before you choose.
#1 Best Overall
- Workflow match. Do you want a prompt-to-app flow, a full development environment, a visual no-code editor, or an AI code editor?
- Backend. Does the tool include a database and authentication, or does it generate a user interface and leave the backend to you?
- Hosting. Does the platform host and publish the result, or does it hand you code to deploy elsewhere?
- Code control. Can you work directly in the codebase and keep control of the repository and deployment choices?
- Output target. Is the goal a responsive web application or a native iOS or Android app?
- Usage economics. How is usage metered, and what happens once the included amount is used up?
Prompt-to-app builders
These tools turn a written description into a running application with a user interface and a backend. They differ mainly in how much of the stack you can see and change.
Lovable
Lovable is the closest workflow match to Bolt.new in the comparisons reviewed here. It is described as generating an application with a front end and a connected backend, which makes it the most natural first trial for someone whose current habit is describing a feature and watching it appear. Ask early what you can export and where the result is hosted, because the comparisons do not settle those details for every tool.
Replit
Replit suits readers who want the agent and the code in the same place. Its workflow is oriented around an integrated development environment, and it is described as covering full-stack work and hosting. If you expect to open files, edit them by hand, and keep the database alongside the code, it is a stronger fit than a pure prompt box. Replit is also one of the three systems measured in the benchmark study discussed below.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
v0
v0 is aimed at teams already building React interfaces and deploying on Vercel. The comparisons do not describe it identically. One emphasizes React and shadcn/ui components with Vercel deployment, while another frames it as a broader full-stack tool. Read Vercel’s current v0 documentation to see what it generates and hosts before you assume it covers your backend needs.

Base44
Base44 is described in the comparisons as a managed builder with integrated authentication, a database, and hosting. That bundle suits a solo builder who wants fewer services to connect. Because the backend is built in, check the depth of its data model and permission controls against what your application requires. Integrated features are not the same as complete ones.
Softgen
Softgen is a prompt-led builder that lets you choose among underlying models, and it appears in the September 2026 comparison. Its model lineup and plan limits are the details most likely to have changed since that article was published, so confirm them on the vendor’s own site.
Visual and native-output platforms
Bubble
Bubble is a visual no-code platform rather than a prompt-to-app generator. The comparison describes it as a mature platform with a built-in database and app-level roles. Expect a different learning workflow than a prompt box: you assemble screens, workflows, and data relationships in an editor, and that takes more setup time up front in exchange for direct control over how the application behaves.
FlutterFlow
FlutterFlow is an adjacent choice. The comparison says it exports Flutter apps for app-store release, which means its output target is native iOS and Android rather than a web application. Choose it only if a native mobile app is the actual requirement. Treat it as a different output target from the web-application focus of this article, not as a like-for-like swap.
Rank #3
AI code editors
These tools keep the work inside a codebase you own. They help you write and change code with AI, but they do not generate and host a finished application the way the prompt-to-app builders do.
Cursor
Cursor is the developer’s option: an AI-assisted code editor in which the repository, project structure, and deployment choices stay under your control. It fits developers who already know how to write and deploy code and want assistance rather than a managed service.
Devin Desktop
The September 2026 comparison includes Devin Desktop as an editor with inline assistance and cloud-agent functionality. Treat it as a tool for editing code and delegating coding work, not as a substitute for a platform that hosts your application.

Windsurf
Windsurf offers AI help inside the editor for developers who want to keep control of their code. Plan your deployment separately, since the tool is not positioned as a generated-and-hosted app builder.

Production controls are a separate test
A generated application is not automatically ready for production. If your project needs any of the following, check each tool’s documentation rather than assuming it is included:
- User roles and permissions
- Single sign-on (SSO)
- An audit trail of changes and actions
- Durable state, meaning data that persists reliably across sessions and deployments
The comparisons mention app-level roles for Bubble and integrated authentication for Base44. They do not establish SSO or audit-trail support for either, so ask the vendor directly before you commit.

The main academic evidence on this question is a 2025 paper, “From Prompt to Product: A Human-Centered Benchmark of Agentic App Generation Systems,” by Marcos Ortiz, Justin Hill, Collin Overbay, Ingrida Semenec, Frederic Sauve-Hoover, Jim Schwoebel, and Joel Shor. It compares three systems: Replit, Bolt, and Firebase Studio. Its scale:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- 96 prompts
- 288 generated application artifacts
- 205 human participants
- 1,071 quality-filtered pairwise comparisons
The abstract reports that Firebase Studio had the highest win rates across the study’s measured human-evaluation dimensions. Firebase Studio is not on the list of ten, and the study does not include the other tools here, so it cannot rank them. What the study does offer is a direct look at Bolt’s generated output alongside two other systems. The authors draw this conclusion:
Best Value
“These findings highlight a persistent gap between visual polish and functional reliability in prompt-to-app systems and demonstrate the necessity of interactive, task-based evaluation.”
Marcos Ortiz, Justin Hill, Collin Overbay, Ingrida Semenec, Frederic Sauve-Hoover, Jim Schwoebel, and Joel Shor, authors of the benchmark paper
In practical terms, an app that looks finished in a demo may still fail on the tasks you care about. No benchmark in the cited comparisons covers all ten tools, so test the specific workflow you need on a short project before you move anything important.

Compare usage terms, not headline prices
Plan prices and allowances for these tools change, and the comparisons that print them are dated snapshots. Compare the usage model itself:
- Open each vendor’s current pricing page and note the date you checked.
- Identify the unit of usage: credits, tokens, or another allowance.
- Find out what happens once included usage is used up, and whether overage is billed.
- Estimate how many build, edit, and debug cycles your project will need, then compare that count against the unit.
Because each tool meters usage differently, two headline prices are not directly comparable. A plan that looks cheaper can cost more if its allowance runs out during debugging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free Bolt.new alternative?
None of the ten tools is classified as free in this article, because the comparisons do not establish current free-tier terms for any of them. Where a free option is offered, its limits can change, so whether it suits you depends on those current limits rather than on the tool’s category.
