Choose a light by the area it needs to cover
Start with the lighting pattern, then check how the fixture is powered and mounted. Pucks make distinct pools of light; tape follows a long edge; bars spread light across a wider span. A low-cost fixture may also need a separate power supply or mounting accessories, so compare the full cost rather than the unit price alone.

1. Run LED tape under a cabinet for a continuous counter wash
A low-profile strip can illuminate the counter and backsplash along a cabinet run. Measure the usable length before selecting a strip, and confirm its power method and mounting compatibility. If it needs a separate supply or extra mounting materials, include those in the total cost.

2. Add puck lights inside a display cabinet
Pucks create separate pools of light that can draw attention to objects without lighting the whole room. Lumens suggests spacing pucks 8–12 inches apart for even coverage; treat that as general guidance, since the right spacing depends on the fixture and cabinet.
3. Use a slim bar above a shadowed work surface
A bar can spread light along a longer area than a single puck, making it a practical format for counters where you prepare food or do other close-up work. Choose among plug-in, battery-powered, or hardwired formats based on the setup; do not assume a low-priced bar includes every component needed.

4. Put a motion-sensor light in a pantry
A hands-free light suits a pantry you enter briefly, especially when carrying items. Check the listing for how its sensor responds and what powers it. Sensor range, shutoff behavior, and whether it requires a separate accessory should be clear before purchase.
5. Light a closet for quick visits
A motion-sensor cabinet or closet light can make it easier to find clothes without switching on a room light. Match the power source to the location, and confirm the sensor will detect movement where the light is mounted.

6. Put pucks beneath a shelf to highlight what is stored there
Use pucks when a few defined pools of light suit the shelf better than an uninterrupted line. If the shelf is long and you want consistent coverage, compare the result with LED tape or a bar instead.
7. Use adhesive LED tape beneath a shelf for an even line
Tape can follow the underside of a shelf and provide continuous light over the area below. Verify the strip length and power arrangement, and check that the adhesive is suitable for the surface; the listing and manufacturer’s instructions should guide mounting.

8. Target a dim corner of a counter with a short bar
If the dark spot is a narrow work area rather than an entire room, a compact bar can put light where it is needed without relying on a decorative color effect. Look at the fixture’s stated output and how it distributes light, not only its wattage or appearance.

For a shadowed counter or work area, add a dedicated task light and, when practical, keep ambient overhead lighting lower. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program discusses combining task lighting with lower ambient light levels in its guide to purchasing energy-efficient light fixtures.

10. Treat color-changing smart strips as an optional accent
Smart or color-changing strips can add atmosphere, but they are not the default choice for making a work surface usable. A retrieved meross listing described app and smart-home control but was unavailable when checked, so it is not a verified purchase recommendation. Check current availability and price if considering this category.

For a cabinet or corner light, consider whether the beam reaches the whole target area and whether it creates distracting dark gaps. Read the product’s stated light output and coverage details where available; a decorative look or a wattage figure alone does not tell you how effectively it will light a counter.
ENERGY STAR’s figures are specific to downlights, not universal targets for cabinet strips or puck lights. Its current downlight criteria page, accessed in 2026, lists minimum efficacy of 82 lumens per watt and minimum outputs of 345 lumens for apertures up to 4.5 inches and 575 lumens for larger apertures. Those are downlight criteria, not recommended outputs for every small-space lighting hack. ENERGY STAR also says certified downlights use 90% less energy than traditional incandescent models; that comparison applies to certified downlights, not to every inexpensive LED strip or puck.
