To make future iPhone screenshots smaller, go to Settings > General > Screen Capture and choose SDR. SDR screenshots use PNG and change the capture’s brightness and color profile. For a screenshot you already took, crop out unwanted content or export a copy from Preview as HEIC or JPEG, then move the Size slider toward smaller. Cropping removes pixels; exporting changes compression. Choose the method according to whether you need smaller dimensions, fewer bytes, or wider compatibility.
First decide what “smaller” means
People use “smaller screenshot” to mean two different things:

- Smaller dimensions or visible area: remove parts of the image by cropping. This is useful when a full-page capture includes navigation, blank space, or content you do not need.
- Smaller file size in bytes: encode the image differently or apply more compression. This helps with email attachments, uploads, and storage, but may reduce visual quality or compatibility.
The Screen Capture setting affects screenshots taken in the future. Cropping and Preview export work on files you already have. You can combine them: crop first, then export the reduced image.
Make future screenshots smaller with the Screen Capture setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Screen Capture.
- Choose SDR.
Apple documents SDR as the standard option for most computer displays and mobile devices. SDR screenshots use PNG, while HDR screenshots use HEIF. HDR preserves more brightness and color, and an HDR display is needed to see its full quality. Changing to SDR therefore changes the screenshot’s appearance as well as its format; it is not a guaranteed byte-size reduction for every image. See Apple’s current instructions for Screen Capture settings.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If the Screen Capture menu is missing, check your installed iOS version and the current Apple guide. Apple’s documentation does not promise that the same control appears on every iPhone model, software release, or region. Use the crop and export methods below when the setting is unavailable.
Make an existing screenshot smaller by cropping
Cropping is the most predictable way to reduce dimensions because it discards image content you do not need. It also often lowers the byte count, although the final size depends on the remaining image and its encoding.
Crop a normal screenshot
- Open the screenshot in the Photos app or from the screenshot preview immediately after capture.
- Tap Edit, then choose the crop tool.
- Drag the handles until only the useful portion remains.
- Tap Done and save the edited image or save a copy, depending on the options shown on your iPhone.
Crop a full-page screenshot
When Safari or another supported app offers a full-page screenshot, keep only the section the recipient needs instead of sharing the entire page. Apple documents cropping a smaller portion of a full-page screenshot in its iPhone screenshot guide. Open the screenshot, select the full-page view if it is available, crop to the relevant portion, and save.
Crop when the unwanted material itself is the problem: a long article, blank margins, or unrelated account details. Cropping does not let you choose a target file size, so use Preview export when an upload limit is strict.

Export a smaller copy with Preview
Preview provides a size slider for image exports. This gives you an adjustable quality-versus-file-size trade-off without changing the original file.
- Open the image in Preview.
- Tap the actions menu next to the filename.
- Tap Export.
- Choose HEIC or JPEG.
- Move the Size slider toward smaller.
- Save the exported copy and check that it opens correctly before deleting the original.
Apple describes the slider this way: moving it left produces a smaller file, while moving it right produces higher quality. The exact result varies with the screenshot’s content and the selected format. The complete path is in Apple’s guide to exporting or compressing PDFs and images in Preview.
HEIC or JPEG?
| Choice | What it does | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HEIC | Modern image encoding with a size control in Preview | Keeping a compact copy for Apple devices and services that accept HEIC | Some older apps, websites, and recipients may not accept it |
| JPEG | Widely supported export with adjustable size | Forms, websites, and recipients that require a conventional image format | Lower slider settings can soften text or introduce artifacts |
| PNG | SDR’s documented screenshot format | Sharp interface text and broad lossless compatibility | Often not the smallest option when you need aggressive compression |
Apple says HEIF offers better compression than JPEG while preserving comparable visual quality in its general format guidance, but that is a qualitative statement, not a guaranteed saving for every screenshot. Apple also notes that sharing to a device that does not support newer formats may automatically convert the file to a more compatible format such as JPEG. See Apple’s HEIF and HEVC compatibility guidance.
Choose the right method for your destination
| Your goal | Use first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Remove irrelevant page content | Crop | Reduces the visible area and image dimensions |
| Meet a byte limit while retaining the whole frame | Preview export with HEIC or JPEG | Lets you move the Size slider toward a smaller file |
| Take smaller screenshots going forward | Settings > General > Screen Capture > SDR | Changes future captures to Apple’s SDR/PNG mode |
| Send to an unknown or older system | JPEG export | Generally more broadly accepted than HEIC |
| Preserve HDR brightness and color | Keep HDR | HDR retains the extra brightness and color for an HDR-capable display |
Do not rename a PNG or HEIC extension and expect compression; the data is unchanged. Export a new copy in the format your destination accepts.

Quality checks before you share
- Zoom into small text, buttons, and numbers. If they look fuzzy, export again with a higher Size setting.
- Open the exported file in the app or website where it will be used. A service may reject HEIC even when your iPhone can open it.
- Keep the original until the recipient confirms the copy is readable.
- For sensitive screenshots, crop account numbers, addresses, and notification previews before exporting or sharing.
- Do not promise a specific percentage reduction. Apple does not publish a screenshot-specific saving figure, and the result depends on content, dimensions, format, and slider position.
Troubleshooting
The Screen Capture option is not there
Apple’s interface can vary by iOS version and iPhone model. Check for software updates and consult the current Screen Capture documentation. If the control still does not appear, crop or export the existing image instead.
The exported HEIC will not upload
Export another copy as JPEG and move the Size slider only as far left as the text remains legible. HEIF/HEIC compatibility depends on the receiving app and device; Apple says sharing may convert newer formats automatically, but an upload form can still require JPEG.
The file is still too large after cropping
Crop more tightly, then export the cropped copy as JPEG or HEIC using a smaller Size setting. A screenshot with large areas of detail can remain sizeable even after modest cropping.
The compressed image looks unreadable
Move the Preview Size slider to the right and export again. For technical support, receipts, or code, preserving text is usually more important than reaching the smallest possible file.

The screenshot’s colors look different
SDR and HDR are not identical appearances. SDR captures less brightness and color; HDR is intended for HDR displays. If color accuracy matters, keep the original HDR capture and make a separate delivery copy rather than replacing it.

If what you actually need is a smaller, clean capture of a website rather than compression of an iPhone image already in Photos, ScreenshotNeo can create the capture directly from a URL. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an iPhone Photos compressor, so it is useful when the source is a web page you control or need to archive.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with controls for full-page lazy-loaded images, CSS-element capture, device and retina settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocked resources, authentication headers and cookies, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, and bulk capture. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Bottom line
For future captures, select SDR only if its standard-display appearance and PNG format suit your destination. For an existing screenshot, crop away content you do not need, then use Preview’s HEIC or JPEG export and move the Size slider until the file meets the limit without making text unreadable. Keep an original copy when HDR color or maximum quality matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing Screen Capture to SDR shrink screenshots I already took?
No. The setting applies to captures made afterward. Existing files must be cropped or exported again.
Is there a guaranteed number of megabytes an iPhone screenshot will lose?
No. Apple does not publish a screenshot-specific reduction figure; the result depends on the image, dimensions, format, and Preview’s quality setting.
Should I send HEIC or JPEG to someone using a non-Apple device?
Use JPEG when you cannot confirm HEIC support. HEIC can be smaller, but the receiving app or upload form may require a more compatible format.
